Up for auction today is what is known as a Letter Book. Before these technological times. In order to have a copy of your letters, you would write in these thick books that had tissue paper and with the use of carbon paper, each letter written would have its own copy. So these are the original copies of his letters written, both personal and business. Remember, these are the actual carbon copies, not the letters themselves(although there are a quite a few regular loose letters that I found between the pages. There are a total of 497 used pages used in this book that date between 1894-1900. The best thing about this journal of copied letters is that it belonged to a very prominent man by the name of Joseph Bradford Hardon; whom I might add was married to the second cousin of President Cleveland. Before I get to the actual letters themselves ... moreI found an obituary on the web taken from a 1902 book about Harvard College and its graduates and I quote… Joseph Bradford Hardon died suddenly at this home in Cambridge January 1 st. 1902. Hew was born in Attleboro. Mass, was March 31 st. 1834 and thus the oldest member of our class. His father, comfort Hardon, moved his family to Martinsburg. Va. In 1841. He was the proprietor of various stage lines, till the opening of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad ruined that business. Comfort Hardon was the son of Jacob Hardon. Who served in the Revolutionary War. Our classmate’s mother was Anna Hall Field. He lived in Virginia some ten years and began early to impart to others what he had learned in the usually poor schools in the vicinity of his home. The school that he taught in 1852 in Falling Waters was held in the edge of the woods in a log-house“chinked and daubed. whose furniture was of the rudest description. There are tears to the edges and corners. The top and bottom of the spine have tears. The corners are bent. The pages have bent corners, creases, and yellowing. The page edges are dusty and yellowed. Wesley D. Bellis(1822-1884) farmed in Kingwood. Hunterdon County, NJ and was the township freeholder, assessor, collector, and committeeman. He was elected as Hunterdon County Sheriff and served from 1874 to 1878. This large historic 1861 ledger(11" x 16" x 1 1/2" is leather bound. But shows aging(see photos) The spine has"Day& Sales Book" and"W. D. Bellis" On the interior, the bookplate reads Francis E. Lortree, Stationers, Printers& Book Binders, 45 Maiden Lane, New York. Some pages are dog-eared, but in very good condition and are tightly bound. The book details the sale of sheep and lambs from July to November 1861(about 10 pages filled) afterwards the ledger is blank(up to 317 numbered pages) An interesting piece of Hunterdon County history. Up for your consideration is this very nice Dun reference book I purchased at an estate/consignment auction. It is quite large measuring around 16 1/2" X 11 3/4" X 2 1/2" and weighing around 10 1/2 lbs. It is my understanding that these books were printed annually and subscribers were supposed to destroy old issues once a new one came out so these are rare and hard to find. Overall. I believe the condition is very good with some wear on the outer edges and a few pages have minor tears. On the front lettering, it appears something hot may have cause a little damage. Please refer to pictures. Shipping costs have been rising significantly. If I list a shipping cost and the item is shipped for less than billed(over $1 less) I will refund the difference.
