Up for Auction: An Antique Book: Maury on Elequence 1833 Translated from the French Version Jean-Sifrein Maury(26 June 1746– 10 May 1817) was a. Archbishop, and bishop of I am not an expert on antique books. But I will try to describe what I see. I would say the condition is between horrific and pitiful. The spine has seperated, and is being held on by two little rope like strings, and some black tape. The Black tape was placed there by Morningside College in 1934. There is a notation, that says it was"found 2-8-34" They were probably excited to find an antique back then, and placed it in their"Rare" section. All the pages are there. But quite blotchy. I don't think it is mold, but I really don't know. The first two pages are torn, and alot of the upper right corner is missing. This includes the title page. The ... morepages are all readable. This auction is for one of those rare 18 th century reprints. Measuring only 4 1/8 by 7 ½ inches. This 23 page book is complete. The covers are made from handmade 18 th century heavy gauge paper and then sewn together at the binding. I was not able to find a photograph of another example of this book showing the original binding. I believe the binding on the book in this auction is original. The pages are strong. But there are folded corners, foxing and toning, and edge damage. I have no idea what this rare American copy of Rest for a Wearied Soul is worth. Walker are on the inside front cover, the names of all three are found at the top of many pages. The ledger accounts are all of individuals and/or entities from ERIE. And are mostly from 1837 and 1838. The ledger appears to be an accounting of the LIQUIDATION of a GENERAL STORE OWNED BY E. D. GUNNISON(another notable citizen of Erie. Pennsylvania) now under RECEIVERSHIP of Joseph M. Sterrett and John H. Walker. Many pages are titled:Joseph M. Sterrett& John H. Walker assignees of Gunnison& Sage” In 1835. Joseph M. Gunnison formed a co-partnership with Charles T. Sage, his son-in-law, under the Firm name of“Gunnison& Sage” The financial revulsion of 1836 ... morecaught them, and the Firm went down, stripping him of most of his accumulations. From the book“A Genealogy of the Descendants of Hugh Gunnison of Boston, Mass: From 1610-1876. One Hundred and Twenty Seven Families. compiled by George W. Gunnison, published by George A. The first three pages seem to be a listing of accounts paid out by the Receivership. Including“County Taxes” Rent to various individuals, notes paid, etc. Includes names of persons and/or entities paid, amounts, dates. This is followed by 101 pages filled with individual accounts. With Full Names of the account holder(s) description of item(s) purchased, and amounts owed or have paid. This was perhaps for collection purposes. Original Civil War Book CONFEDERATE GENERAL JOHN B. GORDON Memoirs Antietam UCV Original hardbound first edition of Reminiscences of the Civil War. By Confederate General John B. Gordon, printed in 1903. This book measures 9" x 6" and is two inches thick. With 473 pages. It is bound in dark blue cloth, with gilt embossed lettering on spine and cover, with a circular gilt design seal from the United Confederate Veterans. There are three full-page tissue-guarded portraits of the author: 1] at the close of the war, in uniform, 2] at age twenty-two, from a daguerrotype, and[3] as a U.S. Senator from the state of Georgia, in 1896. The top edges of the pages are gilt. This book was published in New York by Charles Scribners Sons and is dated 1903 on the title page. The data on the reverse side of the page reads"Published October. ... more1903. The Devanne Press. Gordon was an early supporter of the Confederate cause. And raised a company of mountaineers known as the"Raccoon Roughs. In May 1861, this company was incorporated into the 6th Alabama Infantry Regiment with Gordon as its captain. He quickly established a reputation for fearlessness under fire and saw action in numerous battles during the war. At Antietam he aided in holding a key sunken road(Bloody Lane" and was wounded five times during the course of the fighting. Later actions included Fredericksburg and Salem Church during the Battle of Chancellorsville. Blocher's Hill at Gettysburg, Saunders Field at the Battle of the Wilderness, Spotsylvania Court House, Cold Harbor, Monocacy, Winchester, the assault on Fort Stedman, and the Battle of Sayler's Creek. After the war. Gordon served two stints in the Senate as well as a term as Governor of Georgia. In 1890, he became the first Commander-in-Chief of the United Confederate Veterans and published his memoirs in this book, Reminiscences of the Civil War, in 1903. He died in Miami. 1870s ledger record book John Fox * Town Clerk of Jaffrey in Cheshire County NH
Hand-written ledger/ record book from the 1870s which evidently belonged to John Fox who was the town clerk and Justice of the Peace(among other things) in Jaffrey. New Hampshire, since it has several 17 agreements(referred to as Actions) in ink which were testified before him. Also includes general recordkeeping with lists of items& various people including Milton Armstrong. Addison Adams, Clarence Bailey, Rufus Chase, Lyman Furman, Ryan Samuel, Mrs. Mary W. Roberts, Isaac Russell, E. P. Shattuck, William Wheeler, and more. These pages are in pencil. Items of property listed includes things like sheep.
