I’ve been selling antique handwritten diaries for over 25 years now but I’ve also been collecting antique blank diaries too. Can’t seem to pass up a good diary. Anyway I thought I’d start also selling on my site these blank diaries. When I started collecting them I realized they made wonderful gifts and so I’d give them to family and friends for birthdays. Christmas, graduation presents, etc. They make wonderful pieces too because there are particular years that are special to certain people; especially the year they are born or the year they graduate. That’s what makes them such unique gifts and with Christmas coming I thought it would be a great time to list them. All of the ones I’m listing are in almost mint condition but again, they are vintage so there’s always a little bit of wear. Diaries(written in or blank) are becoming rarer and rarer and that’s another reason this makes such a wonderful gift. This particular diary in this auction actually comes with its original box which says. A Gift from Hess Brothers. The box is a bit worn around the edges of the top cover and the bottom has a tear. This is a Black Americana collectible piece too. The diary itself is suede and has a hand painted scene on the front. It’s a“Five Year Diary” and since this one has a torn page with some foxing on a few of the pages and not in as good a shape as the rest of them that I have I’ve lowered the buy it now price. Here’s a little history on the Hess Brothers Department store… Hess’s was a department store chain based in Allentown. Pennsylvania and the brothers first rented out ½ of the Grand Central Hotel. The company started in 1897 with one store. Originally known as Hess Brothers, and had grown to nearly 80 stores at its peak in the late 1980’s. The book is titled STILL'S UNDERGROUND RAIL ROAD RECORDS. It was authored by WILLIAM STILL publisher in 1886 and has a copyright date of 1883 by WM. STILL. On the title page it states REVISED EDITION WITH A LIFE OF THE AUTHOR. NARRATING THE HARDSHIPS. HAIRBREADTH ESCAPES AND DEATH STRUGGLES OF THE SLAVES IN THEIR EFFORTS FOR FREEDOM. TOGETHER WITH SKETCHES OF SOME OF THE EMINENT FRIENDS OF FREEDOM, AND MOST LIBERAL AIDERS AND ADVISERS OF THE ROAD. It further states that WILLIAM STILL was For many years connected with the Anti-Slavery Office in Philadelphia, and Chairman of the Acting Vigilant Committee of the Philadelphia Branch of the Underground Rail Road. We have photoed the front cover and binding edge, the Title page with a photo of W. Still, the 2 page Preface, the 2 Illustration pages, all of the Contents pages plus one illustration engraving. There are also some pages with pictures of photos of quite a number of individuals that we did not photo. There are 780 pages plus in the back there are 5 detailed Index pages listing the names of individuals. Obviously, with this huge amount of content we could not photo a great deal. The pages are in great condition with none of them torn, loose, missing, bent or scribbled on. The second inner sheet has 2 presentations dated 1901 and 1931 in fountain pen ink. The second and third sheets have some water staining. The original tissue is between the author's picture and the Title page. The spine is tight. The binding is fairly tight. The top and bottom edge of the binding show some wear. The corners are bumped and they show some wear. The back and front covers show a little rubbed wear.
