Early Antique 18th Century Dated 1788- German Bible with Coin Silver Latches& Leather Binding The antique German bible from the 18th century is dated 1788 on one of the interior front pages.The hand painted interior page has a decorative floral pattern and old German text with a 1788 date within a border of vibrant red and rich green tempera pigment. The early bible has hand-made coin silver corners. Engraved hinges and decorative coin silver latches that are hallmarked on the inside"12" indicating German coin silver) along with“IPS” EV” and“B” There is a hand written note in German script affixed to the first page. The decorative early handmade endpapers have an unusual iridescent metallic copper floral pattern. The leather bound covers of the book have scratching and scuffing, and some of the leather is missing from the spine ... morebinding- typical and to be expected with a book of this age. The silver hinges and edges are tarnished, and the latches still operate properly. The inside of the book is in good condition, with a few spots of mold and yellowing of pages. The front cover measures 6 ¾” high x 4 ¼” wide. This is good copy of the Self-Pronouncing Holy Bible.Old and New Testaments, translated out of the original tongues, 20th Century edition, published by A.J. Holman. There is no pub date, but at least two images have copyright dates of 1890, and 1891. The book has amazing illustrations; it has historical contexts, lists of prophets and saints, descriptions of each book in the Bible, etc. Over 900 pages, including concordance. The book is old. So the binding is loose, at least one page is torn(although still together) there are small tears, foxing, little stains here and there. The cover is scuffed, spine bumped and frayed a bit top and bottom. The book is 12" by 9.5" and weighs 8.5 pounds. Many illustrations by Gustave Dore.

We found our quarters below rather contracted, the‘cabin’ being scarcely large enough to more than accommodate us during meal time…We awoke after our first night out to all the misery of seasickness, Maj. RARE 1846 Illuminated Bible From Trinity Church New York City, Harper & Brothers
This is a extremely rare piece of religious history! What you are looking at is a Illuminated Bible from 1846 printed by the Harper& Brothers Publishers out of new york. A very rare publisher alone. But not only is this a rare and fine quality example of a antique bible, it is from the Trinity Church in New York City. The bible contains the new and old testaments. The front cover of this book features a beautiful depiction of the church, and on the back cover is the alter of the church! Giving this book amazing historical provenance. The book itself is in good condition for it's age, with all pages intact and still strongly fastened to the binding. I did not find any written on pages in the book, and no ripped, torn, or folded ones either. There are only a couple towards the beginning of the book that have a small amount of stains ... moreon them. The only major flaw on this entire book is the front cover has broken off, very cleanly, but is it broken off. After speaking with a book expert, this could be around a $300 repair to reattach the front cover, and repair the back cover to be sure it doesn't fall off either. other than that the book is in what I would call amazing condition for being as old as it is. All pages are still crisp and clean for the most part. The last one of these books to go up for sale was in 2011, and it sold for a price of $1,500! But due to the damage to the cover, I am offering it at a reduced price. If this book does not sell for this price, I am going to have it restored myself, and re list at the last recorded sale price. This is an 1876 Leather Cover Pictorial Bible. It was put out by the Jones brothers. It has 1000 or more block print Illustrations. I looked through the bible and it seems about every 2 pages or so is another 8x10 or so block print with the tissue paper still in place. The book is 13" high 11" wide and 4" thick. It weighs a lot. My cost to ship is way more then $4.00. The leather shows some wear but I really don't see any wear through. The binding in my opinion is really good considering it's age. The page show some yellowing. A few spots here or there. I did find one page with a 3" or so rip at the bottom of the page. The page is all there though. The family section at the very end of the Bible is gone. I can see there was a picture section on the next page with just a faint image showing it was there. I know ... morepeople break these up an frame the pictures to make a lot more money. I am hoping someone will buy this and not do that. I know I can't do it. Even if it meant making more money. This book was fetched out of a pile at a garbage dump in upstate NY by me when I was 4-5 years old.and I will be 40 this year. I was there with my mother and I still remember finding this book and looking at the date and saying to my mom"wow. This book is really old" so she put it in the car and its been in my family ever since. The binding is still in place but both covers have come off. It's actually how I found it. It's been stored away in the same condition for 35 years. Hundreds of engravings which I have read some are from Gustav Dore. The pages have some staining. But all plates are frameable and I ha ve seen EBay sellers selling color plates from this bible f or 50 $ each! The color plates are bright and the gilt is glistening. I will be adding more pictures of beautiful plates of the Lord's Prayer and more. This bible needs some restoration. But all pages seem in good shape with only one or two with some tearing. Unique Pa German Groff Family Bible Record 1700s
You are viewing a rare and unique Pennsylvania German manuscript Bible record for the Groff family of Lancaster County. PA This page was removed years ago from a Bible and then mounted to cardboard with staples(see scan) The overall damage from the staples is minimal since they can be removed rather easily( had it been idiot Scotch Tape, the acid would have ruined the paper) The good news is that the inscription is intact, and that the records may prove invaluable to someone descended from this old illustrious Mennonite family. The sheet of paper measures 6 1/2 by 9 1/2 inches with German script on BOTH sides. We have not attempted to lift the old paper to show the back side but there is 1(one) entry on the back for a child of this same family. What you see here are the birth dates of babies, Marx(Marcus) 1757, Hans(John) 1778, Anna(1780) ... moreDavid(1782) and a later one on the back. It has been suggested that perhaps Marcus is the father of the others, since there is such a time span between him and the rest: he was old enough to start making babies in the 1770s, but this is just a suggestion, since many of these old Mennonites ran through several wives. In any case, here is genealogical information not found anywhere else and it looks as though the original family Bible may be destroyed. RARE.

During the Revolutionary war, anticipating the move of the British and Indians, Mr. Irvine loaded his goods in canoes and passed down the ... moreriver with his family into Cumberland county for safety. While here he died, the family moving back to their old home after the troubles were over. John Irvine was three times married, having children by each wife, 22 in all. Three of his sons. Andrew, George and Welch came to Bradford county. Andrew Irvine. The eldest son of John by his third marriage, was born May 28, 1789 in Northumberland county. In 1812 he and his brother Guy C. returning from the war, passed through Towanda. The place at that time was more remarkable for three streams of water running through it than anything else it possessed. The center stream caught the eye of Andrew as the spot to locate a tannery. Accordingly, he purchased a half-acre of ground of William Means and erected a 2 1/2-story log house thereon. In the upper room, he cooked his meals and slept using the lower room for a shop. Mr. Irvine's lot extended from one door south of where M. E. Rosenfield's store now is to Patton's block. His log house stood about 35 feet below Main street back of the Tidd Hotel. Etc" This Bible remains fairly well bound although the heavy front cover is detached. The papers are slightly browned. I don't see any water damage. It is illustrated with colored plates. Photographs, and copies of etchings. No illustrator mentioned. It weighs about 10 lbs. The front and back covers are 1/2 inch thick. Marriages and deaths. The title page has been stitched back into the bible. The flyleaf has an inscription to M.P. MAXWELL Jan 20 1839. The inside back cover has 4 obituaries pasted in Additionally there is a 8 x 11 paper written apparently in 1941 giving the names of John B VOSBURG born 1877 and Cassie J. who I think was a BLOOM) and 6 children and spouses PLUS the names and ages of grandchildren and where they lived. Which include Oklahoma, California(including LA and N. Hollywood) ... moreThis paper was kept in the bible. In addition there are 4 other articles pasted on the actual genealogy pages.scanned) Sometimes the name is spelled with the H on the end and sometimes not. This family appears early in Wyoming Co PA. Some moved west to KS- The earliest dates are for Levi MAXWELL born 1770 and his wife Sally WHITNEY in CT 1775. Charles VOSBURGH was born 1809 and his wife Mary P. I believe surname was MAXWELL) born 1810. Death record for Jacob VOSBURG 1853 age 68 and Ruth BATES VOSBURG 1829 age 50. Calculating this would make their birthdates 1785 and 1779. This Bible was presented to the owner in 1925. It was obviously well-used. I think it's in pretty good condition. There is obvious wear and it shows its age. What is really interesting is that the little things the owner tucked into her Bible were still there. And I have included them: a book mark, a little birthday greeting, and a black and white snapshot of a cow. The owner also recorded some deaths and births in the back.
