In various parts of the town workmen plied their trades. Cabinet makers hammered and sawed, bakers baked their loaves of bread, cloth-makers dyed and pressed their cloth. The streets were filled with people, and shopkeepers hawked their wares: snacks both hot and cold, glassware, vegetables, pots and jewelry. Inside most of the houses lunch was being prepared. Suddenly a violent, cracking sound filled the air. From a mountaintop a vast mushroom cloud billowed into the sky. Within a short time the city of Herculaneum would be lost to history for almost two thousand years. Like its sister city Pompeii on the Bay of Naples. Herculaneum was buried by the great eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 A.D. Unlike Pompeii, smothered in hot ashes, Herculaneum was smothered under a river of hot mud. The mud slowly cooled and hardened. Herculaneum, buried at depths ranging from sixty-five and ninety-five feet, was preserved as if in plastic- a treasure-trove for rediscovery many centuries later. In this story, Author Joseph Deiss tells of that rediscovery, the years of painstaking archaeological work that went into digging out this fascinating city. From its well-preserved remains it is possible to virtually reconstruct the life that went on there. And Mr. Deiss has done so admirably with words and over ninety photographs, many of which have never before been published. Antique 1850 Swedish & English New Testament American Bible Society Book VTG
Here is The New Testament of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. It was translated out of the original Greek. This was published by the American Bible Society. It is dated 1850. Each page has two columns. One is written in Swedish and the other in English. This is a hardcover book. It measures about 7" by 4 1/2" by 1 5/8" It has 655 pages. This is in rough condition. The covers are almost completely detached from the book. The covering on the covers is torn. Peeling and missing pieces. There is a lot of wear and tear to the corners, edges and spine. The top piece at the spine is missing. There is a lot of writing to the blank pages at the front and end of the book. Some is old inscriptions, some looks like it has been copied or traced over to make it more legible. The pages have a lot of foxing, yellowing and staining. The Bible measures about 7" by 5" by 1 5/8" This is a hardcover book. This is from a large collection of religious books. The covers have wear and tears to the edges and corners. There are some white stains to the back covers. The pages have some creases and bent corners. The title page is torn at the binding. There are some ink stains to the top of the last few pages. Here's a beautiful solid oak Bible stand/easel. When I bought the stand I was told it came from a church in Scottville. Il. The picture depicting Christ carrying the cross came from an antique 19th century Bible and was later put on using decoupage. The brass eagle was also added to simulate Isaiah 40:31 This is a one of a kind piece and will really add some beauty to displaying your Bible Rear board with picture measures 19 3/4" across and 12 1/4" high. Bottom lip that supports Bible protrudes 1 1/2" The picture itself measures 12 1/2" wide X 7" high(removed from a 19th century family Bible) I refinished this stand and decoupaged the picture using mat-antique finish, very nice rustic finish to it. Gilt-stamped black cloth with glassine wrapper, 8.25 x 6.5 in. 10 pages. Bible leaf no longer present, and small loss to top edge of wrapper; the book itself is otherwise clean, crisp, and fine.
