CARL L. BECKER - CORNELL HISTORIAN PHILOSOPHER & AUTHOR - AUTOGRAPH LETTER 1937
CARL L. BECKER- Handwritten Letter on His Personal Stationery. The stationery has his printed address of“109 West Upland Road. Ithaca, New York” at the top. The letter is addressed to“Mr. Pickman” Edward M. Pickman) and is dated May 25. 1937. It is about Edward Pickman’s book THE MIND OF LATIN CHRISTENDOM(Oxford, 1937) which Pickman had sent to him. Carl Becker thanks him for the book and says that he looks forward. With pleasure, to reading it. Single-fold sheet to make 4 pages. 5.5” x 6.5” written on the front page only. About CARL L. BECKER(from Wikipedia) Carl Lotus Becker(September 7. 1873– April 10, 1945) was an American historian. He was born in Waterloo. Iowa. He enrolled at the University of Wisconsin–Madison in 1893 as an undergraduate, and while there gradually gained an interest in studying history. Remaining on for graduate work, ... moreBecker studied under Frederick Jackson Turner, who became his doctoral adviser. Becker got his Ph.D. in 1907. He was John Wendell Anderson Professor of History in the Department of History at Cornell University from 1917 to 1941. He was elected a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1923. Becker died in Ithaca. New York. Cornell has recognized his work as an educator by naming one of its five new residential colleges the Carl Becker House. He is best known for The Heavenly City of the Eighteenth-Century Philosophers(1932) Four lectures on The Enlightenment delivered at Yale University. His assertion—that philosophies in the"Age of Reason" relied far more upon Christian assumptions than they cared to admit—has been influential. From his work Heavenly City: In the thirteenth century the key words would no doubt be God. Sin, grace, salvation, heaven and the like; in the nineteenth century, matter, fact, matter-of-fact, evolution, progress; in the twentieth century, relativity, process, adjustment, function, complex. In the eighteenth century the words without which no enlightened person could reach a restful conclusion were nature, natural
1945 WWII Handwritten Autograph Album Diary Camp Stoneman Biak Yontan Airfield
Up for auction today is a handwritten autograph album belonging to a soldier who was in the army during WWII and it looks like he was the baker in the outfit; or at least all of his buddies who signed the book refer to him as that. They also call him“Stubby” I tried to see if they were all part of the same company but didn’t have the time to research it thoroughly. In the back of the album there is a three page diary entry which gives you a good idea of where he was and when. And I quote… MY DIARY My Voyage Overseas. I left Camp Stoneman at San Francisco Cal. August 27 th. 44. I passed by Guadalcanal and arrived in New Guinea 9/11/44. Arrived in Biak Netherlands East Indies 9/25/44. We were on the front lines there then. They hadn’t invaded the Philippines yet. Our first big air raid hit us March 22 nd. 1945. There was nine of my buddies ... morekilled then, blew everywhere, it missed me by about 50 ft. Daisy Cutter, the name of the bombs. We had 27 air raids there. We loaded on L.S.T. June 18 th. And left for the Philippines June 22 nd. We went to Leyte and it took 5 days to get there. We stayed two days. Then we started for Okinawa. It took us 4 days. We started unloading at Naha 4 th of July. The 5 th of July we moved to Yontan Airstrip(at least I think it says Airstrip) about 25 northwest. Our first night there and the air raids started. This is August 4 th. We have had 33 air raids here. We bet among the fella’s who guessed the closest time they come over. The nips… His entries suddenly stop there. I found out some very interesting information on Yontan Airfield… Yontan(Yomitan) Airfield was originally established by Imperial Japanese Army in 1944 as Kita Airfield( 北飛行場, Kita Hikōjō? Historic Texas Autograph Letter May 1845 Annexation Of Texas To John M. Allen
Historic Texas Autograph Letter May 13th 1845 from US Brig Porpoise. Letter reads” U.S. Brig Porpoise. Galveston, May 13th, 1845. Sir, I arrived off the Island of Galveston the day before yesterday with the squadron under my command. This morning I hoisted my Pendant on board the U.S. Porpoise; and have come with the vessel into the harbor to pay the compliments of the squadron as well as my own personal respects to the authorities and the people of Texas. A national salute of twenty one guns will be fired from the Porpoise if it will be returned“Gun for Gun” Faithfully your obedient… Unfortunately. The signature has been clipped and the letter has been mounted to a ledger sheet. Although the letter no longer has the signature I believe it to be from Lietuanant Charles Wilkes to Galveston Mayor John M. Allen. Historic content coming only ... moretwo months after the President annexed Texas. The letter measures 7 7/8” x 6 ½” The ledger sheet measures 12” x 7 ½” Partial remnants of another letter is on the reverse. Some brief historical context is as follows. USS Porpoise was a 224-ton Dolphin class brigantine(later rerigged as a brig) Built at the Boston Navy Yard. She was commissioned in August 1836 and performed survey and anti-piracy duties off the U.S. coast for the next two years. In August 1838 she began an extended deployment with the United States Exploring Squadron, commanded by Lieutenant Charles Wilkes, who had the sloop of war Vincennes as his flagship. For more than four years Porpoise sailed around the world, examining previously unseen regions off Antarctica and surveying much of the south Pacific. During 1843-1844 the brig participated in anti-slavery patrols off western Africa. This was followed by wartime service off Mexico's eastern shore in 1845-1848. Later in 1848 Porpoise returned to west African waters for a second tour of duty against the slave trade, this one lasting until December 1851. Her next assignment was as a part of an exploring squadron under the command of Cadwallader Ringg

Antique Autograph / Memory Book circa 1880s Many Dated Entries Child's Book
Antique Autograph/ Memory Book circa 1880s Many Dated Entries Child's Book I have managed to qualify as an Ebayer Top Seller again. And will continue quality items, great packaging and to provide next business day shipping. Please check my feedback and let me know if any questions, before purchasing an item. I found several tubs. That I had packed away when I closed my antique store in 1998. Even though it has only been 15 +/ years, sorting through these boxes have been full of surprises. I found a few pieces, like this old medical item, in one of the boxes. This sale is for a piece of Victorian History. Seen through the eyes of a child, this book is a window into the life of a child, over 100 years ago. I have looked at every page several times since finding it. And I love the impressive quality of the penmanships demonstrated. In an ... moreera where they are talking about not even teaching cursive writing anymore to see the artistry in the written word, absolutely beautiful, see picts. I did not show every page, and although there are blank pages the book has sentiments throughout the whole book. There is also a very old, maybe a tin-type picture that was found in the book, but I could not make out any details from the picture. Wouldn't it be wonderful if it the picture could be restored, showing the girl the book is written to, but I have no idea if this is even possible. The other romantic thought that I have when I find these books. And wouldn't it be wonderful if the descendents of this young lady could be found. I know that this would be a miracle, but it would still be grand. Some information gleaned from the book include: The little girl's name is Etta* One sentiment is from Julia Cole. Pleasant View Indiana* John Bodle was a young friend writing March 21. 1888* Her sister is Cora Meurphy. Or may be Maurphy, she wrote on June 17, 1886 Not only is the penmanship incredible there is some great poetry and even a few that are funny little rhymes. I could probably sell this. For more, at a show, but

Chock full of sentiments, hand drawn art work, poems, and feelings, most of these are from folks in Harpers Ferry, Virginia(Though now it is West Virginia, then it was just Virginia. and Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. The earliest date we see in this is 1832 the latest date is 1835. We naturally were looking for who was famous in Harpers Ferry and found that the relatives of George Washington settled there including his great great nephew Colonel Lewis Washington. We think he signed this, signed L Washington) He would have been around 17 at the time. This journal was written during an exciting time in the sleepy little haven. It was in 1833 when the Chesapeake& Ohio Canal reached Harpers Ferry, linking it with Washington, D.C. A year later, the Baltimore& Ohio Railroad began train service through the town. 1960-1974 Kennedy Johnson Nixon Scrapbook Autograph Jacqueline Kennedy Picture
This is a very exciting Scrapbook. The person/persons involved in putting it together are famous people. I did research on the owners.of this Album. Arnold J. Denys is an American citizen He wrote a book titled" This I Remember of the Great North West. This particular scrapbook is one of 6 that I will be listing of his and his family. I will be trying to list them one after the other. They are huge scrapbooks. This one is over 400 pages. It says that his parents created it but I noticed(see picture) that he made some comments in the book. It is mostly of the 3 presidents mentioned in the title but it covers so much more. There a few blank pages at the end but this is crammed full. I was only allowed 12 photographs so it in no way shows the extent to what is in there. There is a autographed picture of Jacqueline Kennedy. There is a magazine ... moreglued into the scrapbook. They added a few interesting other items besides politics but it is mostly political. I lived through this era but I have not seen much of this. This man was an interpreter for the government and he knew most of these people. He was involved in much of the government involvement in wars. This book also has some of the sex scandals. Jimmy Hoffa. Jack Ruby. Pictures galore. Trust me on this, but this is a little bit of history here. It would be wonderful for anyone who just likes to read or own part of history. I think the autographed picture of Jacqueline Kennedy by itself is valuable. This is large and Heavy 16 in by 12 and it is thick. but I am giving free shipping

During the Civil War, she served as Superintendent of Army Nurses. Early life She was born in the town of Hampden. 1900 SOLAR ECLIPSE EXPEDITION of 1900 Presentation Autograph of Alfred E. Burton
Description 1900 SOLAR ECLIPSE EXPEDITION of 1900 Presentation Autograph of Alfred E. Burton The Eclipse Expedition of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology to Washington. Georgia Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Alfred E. Burton 21 pages With a Heliogravure Photograph of Corona. By Harrison W. Smith In May 1900 a small group from MIT boarded a southbound steamer for Savannah and proceeded from there by train and mule car to Washington. Georgia, to observe a total eclipse of the sun. Alfred E. Burton(Professor of Civil Engineering and later Dean of Students) who led the expedition, chose Washington after careful weighing of such factors as probability of cloud cover and probability of comfort in available hotel accommodations. Other southern localities hosted other groups, but MIT's choice seemed appealing to many, and the Tech ... moremen were soon joined by observers from Harvard, the Blue Hill Observatory, and the Flagstaff Observatory. Burton's account in Technology Review reveals that the visitors from Tech thoroughly enjoyed afternoon teas, a farewell"Georgia cue" i.e. barbecue) and other amenities in addition to their busy preparations for the much-anticipated May 28 astronomical event. A total eclipse of the sun occurs somewhere on earth when the sun. Moon, and earth are in alignment. When the moon's umbra(a conelike shadow created when the moon passes between the sun and earth) touches the surface of the earth, a total eclipse can be observed at that position and at all points within the umbra's narrow path(never wider than two hundred miles) as it races across the earth's surface at approximately one thousand miles per hour. A given location on earth experiences total eclipse for only a few minutes once every three hundred years. The photograph was taken by Harrison W. Smith(an assistant in physics at MIT) Using a camera custom-made from a long wooden box and a lens borrowed from a telescope with an aperture of three inches and focal length of 43 inches. The camera's

1880 DODGE CITY KANSAS MARSHALL MAYOR SHERIFF HAMILTON BELL AUTOGRAPH WYATT EARP
1880s DODGE CITY KANSAS U.S. MARSHALL- MAYOR- SHERIFF- POLICE CHIEF HAMILTON B. BELL AUTOGRAPH FRIEND OF WYATT EARP 32 PAGES Hamilton Butler Bell. H.B. Ham) Bell. Deputy U.S. Marshal, Pioneer Sheriff, Mayor of Dodge City and Grand Old Man of the Southwest by George Laughead. Dodge City, KANSAS There is only one person I know about that both remembered the end of the Civil War and the end of WWII- and was a Dodge City pioneer and US Marshal in between. That is Hamilton B. Bell. Always known as Ham, who in his own words was the"longest living Old West Sheriff and Marshal. Ham Bell was 12-years old at the end of the Civil War and talked about the victory parades. He had his name on a WWII Army Air Corps plane. Giving a short speech as he placed his hand print on the plane in 1943. He never shot a man-and in his journal wrote about saving ... moresome cowboys from the"Earp gang"and he outlived all of his Western associates. Born in 1853. Bell arrived in Dodge City in 1874, and he lived in Ford County until his death in 1947. Ham was Mayor of Dodge City when my grandfather, George E. Laughead, decades younger, was on the Dodge City Commission in 1911. Ham arrived in Great Bend. KS first from Maryland and by 19 was working as a deputy there. Ham Bell hunted buffalo awhile, then got a position with a Santa Fe agent whose office was a box-car, worked there until his appointment as assistant marshal under Great Bend Marshal James Gainsford. Once, when someone said he would not shoot, that he was bluffing, Ham gained some fame of a sort by saying, as he looked the ruffian straight in the eye, A kid will shoot quicker than a man. One point about his gunplay or lack of it- a 1931 interview with Bell says the idea that he never drew a gun on a man when he was sheriff here in the early days is all wrong. He never shot a man. Ham said, and that was mainly because he was always careful to draw his gun in plenty of time before the other man drew his. If I'd never drawn a gun, he said, I wouldn't have lived a week.

Autograph album 1830s signed by key US Baptist missionary workers BURMA Myanmar
American autograph album from the 1830s. With the signatures of important early Baptist missionaries to Burma(now known as Myanmar. Leather binding. Gilt lettering and decoration. 7.75 by 6 inches. 134 pages. Inscriptions are in English but also include several examples of Burmese script with translations of Scripture. Also of note are nine Victorian hair wreaths woven as keepsakes of women who signed the album. Please view the multiple images in the photo gallery and below this long listing. The owner of the album was Miss Minevera C. Arthur(1804-1887) Later Mrs. Adgate, from a promiment family in the Adirondacks of New York state. Most entries are from the 1830s, but a handful of people also signed the album in 1861. Miss Arthur's social circle ranged from young contemporaries and relatives to her"peculiar friend" Isaac Foote ... moreSr. aged 90 when he filled five early pages with his small, neat handwriting. Foote(1746-1842) was born in colonial Connecticut, fought in the American Revolution and became a prominent politician and judge in NY state. Of special interest are the entries from 1834 by several missionaries studying in rural upstate NY at the Hamilton Theological and Literary Insitution. The oldest Baptist seminary in the US and now part of Colgate University. They were under the tutelage of Jonathan and D.B.L Wade, two early missionaries to Burma who were home on leave, as well as Burmese native Moung Sway Moung, who assisted with language instruction. In July 1834, the Wades, two Burmans, and 11 new missionaries set sail from Boston on the Cashmere for the long journey to Burma in Southeast Asia. Miss Arthur was not among the missionaries. Our research has identified entries in the album. Ranging from short sentiments to full-page inscriptions, from the following missionaries who traveled together aboard the Cashmere: D.B.L. Wade, 1801-1868. A pioneering woman missionary in Burma. Deborah B. Lapham] Wade arrived in Burma in 1823 and spent most of the next 45 years there. She and her husband
