FANTASTIC. ORIGINAL 19TH CENTURY NEW YORK CITY FIRE DEPARTMENT LEDGER. This amazing volume was compiled by Hook& Ladder Company No. 19 which at the time operated from Ogden Avenue in the Bronx section of New York City. The location where it was originally organized. Entries run from May 6th through August 15th, 1887, and cover day-to-day activities of the firehouse in fascinating detail. Massive folio contains some 500 numbered pages. Each chock full of handwritten entries including fire calls and alarms, ambulance calls, roll calls, company drills, meal breaks, caring and exercising of the horses, trips to the blacksmith shop, equipment maintenance, supply purchases, etc. This is one of those vintage gems which should be seen to be fully appreciated. Ladders and buckets were financed through the collection of fines for dirty chimneys and a fire watch was established consisting of eight wardens which were drawn from the male population. An organization known as the"prowlers" but given the nickname"the rattle watch" patrolled the streets with buckets, ladders and hooks from nine in the evening until dawn looking for fires. Leather shoe buckets, 250 in all, were manufactured by local Dutch shoemakers in 1658, and these"bucket brigades" are regarded as the beginning of the New York Fire Department. In 1664 New Amsterdam became a British settlement and was renamed New York. The first New York fire brigade entered service in 1731 equipped with two hand-drawn pumpers which had been transported from London. England. I can not find an earlier edition in my research) There are some stains to the leather cover and some binding separation inside the front and back covers. The pages are in excellent condition. There is a signature of the owner in the front of the book but I find no other markings. Tears or stains. The book states that the 791 Illustrations have all been cut on wood from drawing made but special artists. Some illustrations are done in color. Various authors wrote the sections on the different topics of anatomy. The preface says that this treatise on Human Anatomy is designed for the use of students preparing for examination. Here's a beautiful solid oak Bible stand/easel. When I bought the stand I was told it came from a church in Scottville. Il. The picture depicting Christ carrying the cross came from an antique 19th century Bible and was later put on using decoupage. The brass eagle was also added to simulate Isaiah 40:31 This is a one of a kind piece and will really add some beauty to displaying your Bible Rear board with picture measures 19 3/4" across and 12 1/4" high. Bottom lip that supports Bible protrudes 1 1/2" The picture itself measures 12 1/2" wide X 7" high(removed from a 19th century family Bible) I refinished this stand and decoupaged the picture using mat-antique finish, very nice rustic finish to it. No less than 10 coats were used so picture will not get damaged when your Bible is put on it. This diary covers 3 years of his life, and is very detailed. Mr. Hamilton's handwriting is clear and legible, and there are also a few pieces of ephemera included inside of the diary. Every page is packed with writing! Diary is in good condition for its age. It measures 7' x 11 1/2' inches and is about 200 pages long. The first two pages are detached. But the rest of the binding is tight and intact. The pages are in good shape, and all of them are completely filled with writing. BOOK Uffington WV Halleck Monongalia monongahela pa vintage antique historic
This auction is for a wonderful Antique Ledger! I believe it is from Uffington. West Virginia but it mentions other towns in the area(see below) It was started in 1914 and goes up to about the late 1920's. It is a hardback book with a cloth cover, which is titled"Day Book" on the front. It measures about 14" x 5 1/2" It is about 1" thick. It has wear from age; the cover is loose and some pages are torn. Check out the photos! The ledger has various tables printed inside the cover. Such as: Carrying Capacity of a Freight Car, Weight per Bushel of Grain, Quantitiy of Seed Required to Plant an Acre, Foreign Moneys, Business Law in Daily Use and more. The pages are all handwritten. They seem to track accounts in a store(or personal account? and money paid out. They mention various names such as Fred Heigh. Uffington, ... moreFred Hager, Etta Kelley, J. P. Jolliffe, Ed Trickell, Effie Kerns, Lester Haigh, J. W. Dalton, Smith Timber, Nellie Trickett, Halleck Preacher, Halleck Church, John Hanway Timber, Southern Pine Lumber Co. and many more. The first page of the ledger says: Fred R. Haigh/ Uffington WV. So I assume that's where the ledger is from. However. The ledger also mentions Morgantown and Osage Coal Co. as well as the Halleck Church and Preacher(Halleck is in Monongalia County) There are a number of entries for either the Bank of Monongahela Valley or the Bank of Monongalia Valley(it's hard to read) which I believe is in West Virginia. I think Monongahela Valley Bank is now based in Fairmont, WV but the town Monongahela is in Pennsylvania? You might be able to learn more by going through all the entries in the ledger, which I would think would be a fascinating project if you're from that region! This is really a great.
