This is an antique set of 20 Eminent Authors and Poets Steel Plate Portraits with facsimile autographs. The cards are 5x7 and are all intact and still bound by the original ribbon binding. All cards were not photographed due to a 12 photo eBay regulation. The front top half of the leather casing has broken away as can be seen in the 2nd photo and there has been some prior taping of a corner area of the front flap(seen in 1st photo) Each card is in wonderful condition and free of folds. There is very light wear and a few light scuffs and the pages have slightly yellowed from age, and that is the extent of the condition issues. The maroon cloth hardcovers look very good and the pages are all very tight to the spines. I think they were seldom opened, if ever! The books have strong tight hinges and are very clean. They measure about 8" by 5 1/2" and have a great look to them. They appear to be early 1900's but are not dated. They were published by University Press Company Publishers out of New York and this is the STERLING EDITION. This antique set of books was published in 1846. By the author, Daniel J. Cobb, Botanic Physician in Castile, NY. They are titled The Medical Botanist and Expositor of Diseases and Remedies and The Mother's Guide. The Medical Botanist contains descriptions of medical plants, recipes, and diseases with reference to remedies, as well as remarks as to healthier living. The Mother's Guide contains an abrigded system of midwifery and descriptions of diseases and remedies peculiar to females. The Medical Botanist is leather bound, but the torn on the back. It has writing, stains, water damage, and browning of the pages on the inside, but is very readable. The companion guide is hard bound and appears in better condition. However it too has some spots and browning of the pages.

Here you get a very rare set of books titled Bentley’s Miscellany which was a collection of stories from various artists. Originally I believe they were published individually on a monthly basis or something and this set are those stories bound together. This is the very rare 1837 and 1838 edition and the set is complete with seven volumes. What makes it special is that it has one of the very first publishing of Oliver Twist(titled Oliver Twist. Or the Parish Boy’s Progress) written by Charles Dickens(he then went by the pen name Boz) The books are in great condition with minor wear and the set is guaranteed old and original! Offered for sale is this complete 10 volume book set titled. A COMPILATION OF THE MESSAGES AND PAPERS OF THE PRESIDENTS 1789-1897 by James D. Richardson in good to very good overall condition. They have a 1900 title page date along with an 1897 copyright page date. Volume one has a really attractive bookplate under the front cover from the Distributor that reads, Special allotment for Carthage N.Y. MESSAGES& PAPERS OF THE PRESIDENTS This is copy No, 4 SUBSCRIBED FOR BY John N. Koburn Committee on Distribution W. F. Hallan General Secretary" The original paper titled"NOTICE HOW TO OPEN A BOOK" that came with the books is also included. The books have decorative marble end pages and one quarter leather hardcovers with gilded lettering and designs on the spines making this set a rather attractive one that would look great ... moreon on any bookcase! The volumes are well illustrated with beautiful engravings of the Presidents. The pages are very tight to the spines and have light yellowing and light foxing. The leather hardcovers have wear on the edges with light scuffing as to be expected. The leather on the spines is dry and"flaking" as is often the case with books of this age. Some of the volumes have partial splits on the spine seam of the hardcovers, but all still have good hinges and open and close just fine. The gilded lettering and designs on the spines has wear and fading giving this set a great"antique" look! The books measure about 10" by 7" and average about 550 pages per volume. This set was published by the AUTHORITY OF CONGRESS as seen on the title page. The top of the pages on each volume have gold edges. I purchased this set at an estate auction in the Finger Lakes Region of NY State several years ago and they have been in my collection ever since. On the back inner hardback cover the majority of the books have a library card. The covers on the books are also in great condition with just the front corners showing a slight bit of wear.
