1924-1956 School Ledger Eden Fond du Lac Wi Wisconsin Antique Vintage
This is a great find! This ledger begins with what appears to be the first year the school was in operation. Beginning in 1924-25. The ledger accounts monies coming in and out. It looks like Emma Braun was the first school marm. The school was heated with both wood and coal in the beginning. It is amazing to follow the growth of the school and transition over time, when they make improvements to the land, adding a fence, getting their first music outfit in 1929, playground equiptment in 1931, insurance and taxes over time, hiring additional staff, who is splitting wood and delivering coal, and on and on. Some interesting entries are when they started to get the Milwaukee Journal in 1936, electricity must have been installed around 1935, they bought a radio in 1939, the victory tax starting in 1942, enrolling in Wisconsin School of the Air, ... moreand something called Cancer Control. The ledger is complete for every year between 1924 and when it ends in 1956. I would assume the school was closed at that point since there are empty pages after that year's entry. The other thing that makes this ledger stand out from others I have seen is that it lists the names of people who provided services or supplies. These family names include: Braun, Trindt, Siefoff, Yager or Yeager, O'Brien, Karstin, Flynn, Drehmel, Grahl, Benhaus, Briggs, Grahl, Whealon, Webb, Vau or Van, Dahlman& Cooper Supply, Smith, Duenisch, Trantlage, Hahn, Shea, Schlaefer Construction Co. Thank you for taking a trip back in time with me. Specifically to the year 1870! That is when this book by Asa Gray was published in New York and Chicago. It is most definitely a collector's item full of the history of botany studies at that time. Please look at each photo carefully before bidding or buying. Ask any questions you wish. The outside of the book has some wear being that old and I'm sure used by botany students. But in all it is in very good shape for a book of this age. When you first open the book you will see that the inside cover and first page are very brown. I'm not sure why except for age, but it is almost like someone left it open to that place for a long time. There is a little damage to that first page, and some minor damage to the last page, but in all, while the look of a used and old book, it is intact ... moreand is a great collector's piece. The outside edges of the pages when the book is closed show the mottled colored look that old books so often had. I think that it is leaves in that design but can't be sure. The inside binding(front and back) is a little loose. But the book is still holding together very well. While the pages are yellow, I could not find any marks, writing, tears or folds on them. The front cover of the book has a monogram of some kind in the middle of the cover. I hope you look at the microscope page that I included. So fascinating to go back to this period of time and see what they had to use in the field of botany! You are bidding on a very rare treasure. 6-1/8 x 3-7/8 x 3/4 inch thick. The exterior binding is made of wine-red/maroon velvet material( cotton based) which is in good condition considering the age. The upper right corner has a silver/metal ribbon embossed with a 4 leaf clover. The paper. Although some brown/yellowing and some pages reddish, some of the writing a bit faded, is in remarkable condition. The hand writing on ea page is exquisitely readable, with year and signatures of what seems to be a school year book. Pages are hand noted with Francisville, IND. This journal or school study book is all hand-written in a very fine penmanship. The topics inside the book relate to school studies. Ie: grammar, history, math, and geography. Several hand drawn maps are included in the pages of study. Also, long mathematical problems and their solutions are noted. The book or journal was probably used for study and reference. Towards the back the book was used for a flower press and collection of odds and ends. The journal is very worn and tattered, but the pages are nice and orderly. The study level in the journal appears to be that age group. A copy of the Federal Census will be included in the sale. With more work you may be able to track down his ancestry in New Jersey. My mother found this antique book while going thru old stuff. It seems this book is worth $250 in good condition based on research done on the internet. This particular book is in poor to fair condition. Lots of tape on some pages. Binding is coming apart and pages are starting to deteriorate. Still very cool and definitely interesting to a collector of American Geography books. Also found inside is a original drawing that appears to be on velum, as seen in the photos. This is an Antique"The Teacher's Helper Vol II" book from November 1895 that was copyrighted in 1887. It was written by Harriet D. Castle for School Entertainments covering recitations. Dialogues, concert excercises, drills, etc. It was part of a $2.00 per year subscription service for teachers and was published by A. Flanagan in Chicago. The paper covering of the binding is half gone, the back cover has some tears but is in tact, and the front cover has torn loose. Otherwise this is a very rare and unique find with some very interesting stuff inside considering it is 119 years old. It is a soft bound 213 page book that measures 7.5" tall by 5" wide. Antique Handwritten School Books/Botany/Plant Analysis/Womelsdorf/Rhoads Family
A lot of seven antique handwritten schoolbooks. Circa 1903-04. These books were my grandmother's, who spent several years in the Bethany Orphan's Home in Womelsdorf, Pa. in the early 1900's. I thought that they might be of interest not only to the collector of old writings, but to those interested in Wolmesdorf, Bethany Orphan's Home, or the genealogy of the Rhoads family. The best of the schoolbooks is the 1903-04"Record Of Plant Analyses by A.C. Rothermel. Principal, Keystone State Normal Schools, Kutztown, Pa. 1902" 55 of the pages are completed, with a drawing of the plant on the right page and detailed description on the left. Also. Three notebooks: Soldier Boys On Parade" and"The Tar Boy" Soldier Boys" in entirely filled with notes from classes in math, algebra, history, science, and English, ... moreas well as drafts of personal letters to friends and relatives in the back pages. Boy Tar" is mostly math and English. Both of the covers are loose at the top. The third"Soldier Boys" contains notes on English. History, and Latin. All of these notebooks are written in pencil. There is also a"Day Book" for book-keeping with 28 pages. Written in ink. There is a Composition Book(cover detached) with some handwritten notes. But also 16 pages written in ink which contain the names of other residents of the Orphan's Home. Please email me if you are looking for a particular name. Lastly. Here is an 1838 publication of"The American School Library" Typical of the books available in the one-room schoolhouses of the early 1800's. This book covers a variety of historical sketches of interest. The book is in rough shape, but still an interesting survivor from when Martin Van Buren was President of the United States. Overall condition would rate as poor. CONDITION: This book remains in very rough condition. But is exactly as it was found in a home in Upstate New York(Adirondack region) The covers are in place, but the spine is missing the cloth. The spine is also very tight, which makes opening the book somewhat difficult. There is a lot of shelf-wear evident(as seen in the pictures) The pages(as best as we can tell) are all present, but do exhibit foxing, water staining, and general signs of use and age. In my opinion, it's in very good condition with no scribbles or writing inside, no creased pages and no evidence of water or damp damage anywhere. It does however have that old smell. The first few pages are a little loose and one page has separated where one string broke. Fixable without a doubt. The rest of the binding is very tight. There are only a couple light stains on the front that I have not tried to remove. Nothing major though. Especially for being 118 years old! Lot of 2 Law School Notebooks from 1881-1882 Each notebook is approximately 5 1/2 by 8 7/8 inches and is filled by the notes taken by Issac Webb. Mcleansboro, IL as he attended lectures in 1881-82. The green marbled board notebook contains the notes from"Govenor Felch's at Ann Arbor during the term of 1881-82 on Real Estate" as well as notes from"Judge Kent's Lecture on Practice and Pleading Common Law" Felch was governor of Michigan in 1846-47. There are no other markings that I can find. The photographs show the worst of the blemishes. So the book is actually in very good condition for its age and use. There is the typical yellowing and smudge spots a person might expect to find. The binding is worn, but quite sound.
