But it really has an alphabetical file inside to file letters and correspondence. The top fits snug but all it takes is a little push of the finger to release the latch and it opens easily. And he logged the names of every customer and the items they purchased, as well as the amount of the transaction. Contains almost 400 pages. Very heavy and solid. Amazing patina. Several pages torn off near the back(already came this way when we acquired it) What makes this ledger unique. Apart from its inherent collectible value as an 1850s book, is that it contains several entries listing"Samuel Morse" as a customer, including the items he purchased. Samuel Morse, for whom Morse Code was named, was ... moreone of America's foremost inventors and was credited with making vital technological improvements to the telegraph. Best known as an inventor, Morse was also an accomplished painter and the founder of the National Academy of Design. Since the dates coincide with Samuel Morse's lifetime. This book was fetched out of a pile at a garbage dump in upstate NY by me when I was 4-5 years old.and I will be 40 this year. I was there with my mother and I still remember finding this book and looking at the date and saying to my mom"wow. This book is really old" so she put it in the car and its been in my family ever since. The binding is still in place but both covers have come off. It's actually how I found it. It's been stored away in the same condition for 35 years. The insides of the books are immaculate! A+ condition! HERE IS SOME USEFUL INFORMATION: What is it? Describe its form and contents. A Compilation of the Messages and Papers of the Presidents is a 20 volume work containing all Presidential messages. Papers, addresses, communications, and proclamations to Congress, beginning with George Washington and ending with Woodrow Wilson. However, as compiler James D. Richardson points out in his prefatory note at the beginning of the first volume, these Presidential communications ... moredo not include"those nominating persons to office and those which simply transmit treaties, and reports of heads of Departments which contain no recommendation from the Executive. v) The first 18 volumes are made up of these Presidential messages, while the final two volumes consist of a thorough encyclopedic and biographic index supplement to the rest of the series. The set is organized in the chronological order of the Presidents and their communications within their respective presidency. At the beginning of each President's section, there is a portrait of his estate and himself, which is followed by a short opinion statement concerning his life and contribution to American history and society. VG Old Antique LG Leather 1854 Leather Webster's Dictionary, Pre Civil War
Here's a very nice antique or early large leather bound book or volume. The 1854 publishing of Webster's Dictionary. This dictionary was first published by Noah Webster in 1840, then updated and published in 1847 and then updated and published in 1854. The process of revisions and enlargements were provided by Chauncey A. Goodrich of Yale College at the time. This volume is very large at about 10.5 by 8.5 inches in face dimension and 4 inches thick. It has about 1400 pages and at the time of it's publication it sold for $6, quite a bit of money in the pre Civil War period. This one has been well kept considering it's age and period of manufacture. The leather cover shows some signs of age, cover hinges are good and intact, binding of the pages is very nice and the pages themselves are nice as well. My guess is these were published ... morein low quantities in the 1850's and somewhat rare. A very nice example overall of an early american dictionary. That's about it. The pictures should be helpful to those having interest. We'll start this nice antique volume low so enjoy the auction. We'll pack these carefully. Antique One Hundred and One Poems 1928 Cable Co Chicago Leather Bnd Org Box FINE
This is a must have for a true book collector. It is pretty rare. The book has been kept in the box. Which shows much wear, and is tattered, missing some of the sides from the lid. The book itself is like new, spine is firm, intact, and pages are solid in place, but as expected are yellowed, but sturdy, meaning not crumbly. There is no writing, tears, bends, folds, or stains. This collection of poems was collected by Roy J Cook, and printed by The Cable Co Chicago. Each poem has the author and a picture of them as well. Antique c1870 huge leather-bound King James Version Holy Bible. Includes 301 original full-page engraved prints. Many by Gustave Dore, and 149 maps. This American edition includes the Apocrypha and many textual helps, including a concordance, index, the Psalms in metre, Smith's Dictionary of the Bible, and a variety of historical works. Front endpapers are loose, but otherwise in excellent condition for its age. Dore engravings are marvelous!
