FANTASTIC. ORIGINAL 19TH CENTURY NEW YORK CITY FIRE DEPARTMENT LEDGER. This amazing volume was compiled by Hook& Ladder Company No. 19 which at the time operated from Ogden Avenue in the Bronx section of New York City. The location where it was originally organized. Entries run from May 6th through August 15th, 1887, and cover day-to-day activities of the firehouse in fascinating detail. Massive folio contains some 500 numbered pages. Each chock full of handwritten entries including fire calls and alarms, ambulance calls, roll calls, company drills, meal breaks, caring and exercising of the horses, trips to the blacksmith shop, equipment maintenance, supply purchases, etc. This is one of those vintage gems which should be seen to be fully appreciated. Ladders and buckets were financed through the collection of fines for dirty chimneys and a fire watch was established consisting of eight wardens which were drawn from the male population. An organization known as the"prowlers" but given the nickname"the rattle watch" patrolled the streets with buckets, ladders and hooks from nine in the evening until dawn looking for fires. Leather shoe buckets, 250 in all, were manufactured by local Dutch shoemakers in 1658, and these"bucket brigades" are regarded as the beginning of the New York Fire Department. In 1664 New Amsterdam became a British settlement and was renamed New York. The first New York fire brigade entered service in 1731 equipped with two hand-drawn pumpers which had been transported from London. England. The book has a copyright date of 1888 by DODD. MEAD AND COMPANY who were also the publishers in New York. Up for auction is an antique 1911 hardback book"That Printer of Udell's" by Harold Bell Wright. The book is in excellent condition with only a tiny bit of wear along the top and bottom outside spine of the book(please see detailed zoomed pic of outer spine) The front cover is in excellent condition. With the oft missing picture of the older gentleman on the front still completely intact and beautiful. The back cover of the book has one white spot on it about the size of a large pencil nub. Other than that the cover is in wonderful condition, especially since the book is 102 years old! The inside binding is nice and tight. With no pulling away from the spine that I can see. Most of the pages are in beautiful condition with only a couple having a few smudges here and there, and a few having a small amount of water marks showing ... moreon the bottom, probably 1 1/2" corner of about 10-11 pages, but nothing that covers any of the words. There are two nice glossy illustrations in the book as well. All in all a wonderful antiquarian book to add to any collection or just as a nice decorative piece for the house. You are bidding on a 1913 copy of Cooper's the Spy a MacMillan's Pocket Classic. This book was the MacMillan company in 1913 and this particular book was kept in the library of Fort Mifflin Ammunition Base in Philadelphia according to the signature in the back. As you can see from the picture. There is a very nicely written signature in the back which I believe says: Earl Wm Farner. 46 Rosalia St Oshkosh Wisconsin. Or U.S Navy USSC71 Phila. This auction is for a beautiful. Small book from the early part of the 1900's. The book's title is"Pansy Blossoms" and the subject appears to be inspirational and religious quotes. The inside inscription reads"To Mrs. Sheffield From your friend with Dearest Love and Sympathy from Hannah E. English. This book was published by Cupples& Leon Company New York, although a specific date was not mentioned. This publishing company began in 1902. Given that information, and judging by the pictures& Art Nouveau styled borders, I would estimate that this book was printed any time between 1902 and mid 1920's. I have seen similar copies of this book that estimated the date around 1910. As you can see by some of the picture examples I've provided, the book contains very lovely illustrations and borders, with a pansy ... moreflower theme. This book is in good antique condition, particularly for being around 100 years old. However, please note that there is some wear, particularly along the binding, and some of the pages are discolored or have spots. Also, the covers of the book are slightly dirty. They may be able to be cleaned off gently with a barely damp rag, but I will leave that to the buyer to try. No pages are missing, and there are no ripped or torn pages. Mechanics, and All People from around 1898. This appears to be a book that was carried by someone who sold one of those"cure-all" elixirs as they traveled from town to town. This book contains the symptoms for common maladies of the time and methods for"treatment" as well as testimonials from satisfied customers and their pictures. This book also ... morecontains an area for taking notes on current and new illnesses and for keeping track of how many bottles were sold. This particular book belonged to Irene Shirley( Shudy( it's really illegible, and there are a few pages with her calculations on them(oddly enough, there are no entries after March) This book is in decent condition, considering its age- there is some staining on the bottom of the book and the bottom of all the pages(possibly water damage) and the spine is damaged near the bottom. This is an antique soft bound book. It is titled"Puget Sound& Western Washington-Cities-Towns-Scenery- It is by Robert A. Reid Publisher. It was published in Seattle. Washington in 1912. Inside it says"Press of Sherman Printing and Binding Co" and the engravings were done by"Seattle Engraving Company& Hicks-Chatten Engraving Company. This is a really neat book full of history. It covers a wide variety of topics and is full of black and white pictures and engravings. It is a great piece of history for anyone interested in Seattle, or the Puget Sound. I had a lot of fun listing this and looking through the old pictures of how Seattle and neighboring cities used to loook. This is a soft bound book, it is bound in paper sort of like a thick pamphlet. It measures 10.5" x 7.5" and it is just over 1/2" ... morethick. Has 192 pages. It is in good antique condition but does have some signs of wear. The paper cover is worn, and shows wear at the edges and slight fading, also the book itself is disconected off of the cover. The pages are bound together, and seccure/stable though. The pages themselves are actually in really good condition. They are only very faintly yellowed, adn there are a few pages with bent corners. There are also a few water/yellow stains throughout. It is still easy to read and pretty sturdy(minus the binding) Please view all the images and bid accordingly.
