They're art for your art! I love the large size& ethnic look of these unusual sconce shelves. I don't know the exact age or origin of them, as they were purchased from a local estate sale. They definitely have a Mexican look to them in the style& designs of the carving. The finish& the wood, itself. The shelves are both primitive& ornate, with raised heavily carved leaf designs covering the front& sides. These would look great in any primitive. Santa Fe or artsy decor. PR ANTIQUE ARCHITECTURAL SALVAGE VICTORIAN WOOD OAK CORBELS PRIMITIVE CHIPPY
Please scroll down under this description for additional views. Pair of salvage architectural corbels. 10 1/2" by 5 1/2" cut from 1" thick solid oak. These were exterior supports for a porch or roof overhang and if you look at the sides, you can see a shadow outline of the wood that separated them. The faces have a routed line decoration on the top half and a foliate design on the lower portion. Definitely a pair, since the design is a mirror image. Nice for supporting a small shelf or mantel, the oak is quite weathered and most of the white paint has chipped away. One corbel has a broken off edge at the top. Two architectural wood pieces from the exterior of an old home. They have the original flaking. Peeling white paint on them and decorative spindles. There are nails still stuck in them, though I've bent them over be careful of sharp nails. On one, the attached spindle bracket is a little loose which may need nailed and glued. I have the missing decorative finial which you can attach. These are old so they look old and there will be debris in the box from dirt and chipped paint. These are 4 matching corbels which are in very good condition. They have no missing parts and no rotten wood with only normal wear due to age. They are made from solid wood and weigh about 3 1/4 pounds each. Can be used for any architectural project that you might have. They measure 16 1/2" high. 4 1/2" wide by 5" deep at the widest point. I really do not know the age of these corbels, but for safety purposes, I did remove large cut nails which were used to fasten them to the house, I hope this helps with dating them. These are solid wood and I do not have the knowledge of what type of building they have come from. Corbels in our area are on homes that were built before the 1900s but they could be from the 20s or 30s as well. Uses that I have seen are a decorative piece that was used as a support bracket for the front porch but they were widely used in other aspects of decor as well. Usually they weren't weight bearing. I don't know why I just gave you a bit of history but there you go: I love the character of the paint but it is chipping and has loads of patina because this was an outdoor item. I would suggest spraying it with a clearcoat if you would like to preserve the finish. There are lots of dings and dents but are truly a beautiful piece for bookends. Underneath a fireplace mantle, bar support, etc. Some small pieces of wood trim are missing but it just gives them more character. Many truly unique uses and a great conversation

These were very carefully taken off the house a couple months ago and are in really great condition for the age. Pieces are solid and not in a decaying or crumbly state. All are matching off the same house etc. but each corbel is unique with typical wear that would be naturally indigenous to this period and use on the house. They are easy to plaster before painting to reconstruct. Fill in any damage, or cover nail holes. There is a chunk missing as pictured in the front on the one rounded part. These are a pair of antique corbels with a tulip design on both sides. They were in really rough condition so I have primed. And painted them a silver fox(Benjamin Moore) There are places missing some pieces of the wood. The wood is ok but wouldn't be using them for something you have to nail into them. I would use these for architectural accents in a room. Could be used for bookends or just sitting on a fireplace or something like that. Different wood antique achitectural salvage piece.
This is a great architectural piece. Not sure if its off a piece of furniture or a porch accent on a old Victorian home. I purchased it at a sale awhile ago. It has a flat area to fit up against a door opening or just to hang on the wall. I have freshen it up roughly with some creamy white paint. It was white to begin with. Superb 19thc gothic oak carving of a winged gargoyle with chains around. Excellent attention to detail on this fine and very unusual carving of circular design. Around the border is a laurel wreath. Carved centrally in good deep relief is the figure of a gargoyle- winged and with talons- with a chain around its neck and the chain end being attached to the rock that the creature stands on. To top of carved border are the engraved initials B.D.M.F. Measures some 12.5" height x 8.75" dia x 1" depth. Condition is excellent and age commensurate. All as per images.
