The piece also features carved floral motif at the top center, and carved accents around the top as well as the bottom trim. The piece has a semi-serpentine shape, with the two ends being quite curvy, and the center section flatter.

An incredible accomplishment. The foundry work executed in this piece is above reproach- each gilt bronze mount is hand chased to the highest quality, mercury gilded and of outstanding detail. An angular and commanding work, the Armoire is surmounted by a triangular crest that is removable from the body with two dowels on either side- this is flanked by a pair of carved mahogany(replaced) finials. Beneath the projecting crown molding, an incredible gilt bronze mount of an angel riding through ocean waves in a cornucopia pulled along by swans while leaving behind a trail of shells is simply stunning. Flanking this on either side are opposing gilt bronze solider masks. The top is removable. Lifting off of large steel screws inside of the armoire to allow the door to be lifted from it's hinges for easier transportation. On either side of the door, pedestaled on large tapered columns rest large and highly impressive patinated and gilt bronze Classical female heads with bowed ribbon holding her hair back. These are the largest mounts of flawless execution we've seen on a piece from this period, each a stunning work of art in it's own merit. A hand filed steel screw secures each head to the case. Beneath the column, intense gilded Lion Paw's in the Regency manner complete the form. The arched door swings open with use of the original key. Revealing a golden oak interior of four shelves and a single locking drawer. This drawer is hand dovetailed with solid oak secondary woods, when removed revealing an illegible signature in period script along the dust board. Affixed to the top of the armoire on the inside is an old bill of lading from Lawsonia Manufacturing Company in Philadelphia, noting it's sale of an"Exist. This piece is from Korea and is about 20 or so years old. The exterior design was handcrafted by a Korean artisan who cut each piece of mother of pearl and abalone shell to create the likeness of a peacock surrounded by a blooming bouquet of flowers and butterflies. Please note that the color of the mother of pearl changes depending on the light source- when under natural light. It has a silvery iridescent glow and under interior lighting(incandescent bulb) it has an amber glow. The entire piece is made out of wood painted with a black lacquer finish. The interior is wood also(unpainted) I believe pine, but I'm not exactly sure(it's definitely NOT particle board, though) and it features 2 separate sections(left& right) each with different smaller compartments inside, the details of which are described below. There are 2 sliding doors to access the right and left side and it does have a lock, but I no longer have the key. The size of the entire armoire is 7ft(L) x 6.25ft(H) x 2.25ft(D) approx. It disassembles into 6 major pieces(if I'm not mistaken) top section. 2 sliding doors, bottom section, left section and right section. The top section holds the entire piece together. Love this Antique White Gentleman's Wardrobe.it measures 5' 10" tall 3' 1" wide. It measures 2' feet on the inside. It is in excellent used condition. I was excited to find this piece and fell in love with the scroll work on the top edge and on the door. On the inside it is beautiful walnut with a mirror mounted on the door( no cracks) with brass clasp to hold it into place. The door pull is in a tear drop and that just makes the whole piece work. This is an early 1900's antique"chifferobe" or"chifforobe" or"chiffarobe" I.e. wardrobe with 5 drawers and a small mirrored door on one side, and a full size wardrobe door on the other side. Behind the full size door is a place for hanging garments with an iron hanging rod. A couple of the drawers need some work but everything else functions normally. Beautiful wood grain with wear and tear that would be expected for age of furniture. Has been in continual use for 75 to 95 years! The inside of the chifferobe is somewhat more rustic than the exterior. One drawer bottom is quite interesting(see photo# 6)I don't know if this wooden crating material was a replacement or if it originally came that way. Either way. Smaller'hatbox' compartment has original beveled mirror in the door. Larger door on wardrobe side locks and also has the original beveled mirror. I had to reset the mirror as it had wiggled down and once inside found the label from the glass company in Tennessee dated August 1907(didn't think of it at the time. But I should have taken a photo of the tag) Inside this long side, is the original metal rod for your hanging clothes. It is original, sturdy, and strong. This chifferobe stands 64 inches tall outside. The original finish on fruitwood is very well preserved, it has been waxed and buffed so all that is needed to maintain its warm patina is an occasional wipe with a soft dry cloth. There are warps. Mars and shrinkage separations from age for character. Mirrors have a little antique"smoke" to show their age. Hardware is original, there are no keys, modern magnetic catches secure the doors. This lovely extra large antique mahogany armoire or wardrobe with gorgeous wood grains and veneers. Manufactured during the early 1900's in England or Scotland was recently imported from the UK through Edinburgh Scotland. It offers beautiful organized storage for even the largest wardrobe. This early twentieth century wardrobe offers a large double hanging closet with a hanging bar with multiple sliding cloak hooks on the bar as well as cloak hooks around the inside of the closet. This open closet space of course could easily be fitted with any of the the modular storage systems available in most major department stores if that better served the needs of the new owner. The opposing single closet is fitted with three removable shelves which makes four large functional cubbies. The decorative doors on this wardrobe include beautiful veneer ... morepanels on the two outside closet doors and a large arch top beveled mirror on the center closet door. The design of the piece includes decorative metal hardware as shown and it appears to be both original and intact. This wardrobe does have a currently working lock and a key. Though I never guarentee old locks. The real highlight is the gorgeous wood used to create this piece and craftmanship that went into making it into such functional storage space. This is a high quality piece with dovetailed drawers and sturdy construction. This wardrobe has been in our family since my great great grandfather won it as a prize in a pigeon-homing contest in Herentals. Belgium when he was 20 years old. It has been passed down from generation to generation and traveled with us to the states when we immigrated in the 1990s. Unfortunately, it no longer fits in our small apartment. The cabinet was made in Mechelen. Belgium around the turn of the century(1900) The lion heads in the upper corners are typical for the Mechelse style. Antique Wardrobe / Armoire, Solid Mahogany, Possible Entertainment Center
This is a great old heavy solid mahogany wardrobe which I believe is early 1900's. It has been in my family for at least 60 years. The outside was refinished with a blond antiqued finish many years ago and is still in fair to good condition. It is very solid without any loose joints. The inside is all solid mahogany drawers which appear to have their original varnished finish. The drawers are in excellent condition for their age and do not need any refinishing. A few of the dovetail joints are slightly loose but really do not need any attention. There are seven huge open-front drawers which glide in and out easily. It's been in dry storage for the last 20 years. The caning on the doors was done at the same time as the refinishing and is in excellent condition. At one time there were apparently fabric panels in the doors. The hardware ... moreis still there if you want to stretch fabric behind the caning. The doors come with the original brass key and working lock. In my opinion. This wardrobe can be used as is without major refinishing. Or you can restore the outside to the original mahogany finish. There are a few cosmetic issues: A small piece of the hand-carved detail is missing on the top of the right door. Also one piece of narrow dental molding is missing from the left side of the lower panel of the right door. It's fairly simple dental molding and would be easy to recreate with 1/8" dowel and a triangular file. These defects are not very noticeable until you get close. There is also a middle cross support visible in the photos. If the top drawers are removed. This support can be a shelf to turn this armoire into an entertainment center. It would accept a TV up to 31.5" wide(about 34" to 35" diagonal) The lower drawers could house electronics and media. The measurements are 64" high. 36" wide at the top, and 23" deep. That is what you see here in this antique wardrobe. Made in England around the year 1910, it is a gorgeous piece that provides storage for a variety of needs. Inside the right door is a variety of hooks and a fixed wooden shelf while the left door houses a taller open space with a rod. The three drawers slide easily and are made with dovetailed drawer joints. The left door and all three drawers lock with the one included key. The key does not work for the right door. This armoire comes apart in three pieces(crown. Large center section, and base) for easier shipping and moving. We are giving this piece a good condition rating. It is sturdy and solid and all of the doors and drawers function well. There are some minor cosmetic issues to point out. The left door’s oval panel appears to have been replaced.
