American Empire Thomas Day attr. Flame Crotch Mahogany Work Side Sewing Signed
I have owned this piece of furniture for several years trying to understand it's hybrid design of American Empire. I came to understand that it was called vernacular because it did not fit precisely into any style of the period. I had heard of the Freeman of color cabinetmaker. Thomas Day who worked in North Carolina and is acknowledged as America's pre-eminent craftsman working in the 1800's. I now know that he improvised traditional designs to reflect his own personal tastes. His craftsmanship was superlative with apprentices from both black and white journeyman. I also have come to understand that certain key points about his furniture helps identify itself. His choice of exotic and expensive veneers were masterfully matched. Being able to afford steam power equipment, he was able to produce veneers as thin as 1/16 of an inch. ... moreHis precise use of dovetailing to build drawers of cabinets. Nearly all of his furniture is not signed, most is acknowledged through attribution. This superlative example is particularly rare in that it is signed. The family history of a Mary Nye is written on the bottom of the top drawer probably in the hand of Thomas Day. The two drawer work table has letters inscribed in pencil on their sides: a"T" on both sides of the top drawer; a"D" on both sides of the bottom drawer. The letters match the script of the family history underneath the top drawer. Also. On the bottom of the table top is a large letter"D. The table is constructed with wrought iron nails. The dovetailing of the drawers are designed such that the drawer front overlaps the sides to prevent them from interfering with the action of the drawer. The drawers also feature hand-planed chamfered bottoms. The losses of some of the molding reveals a very thin 1/16" flame crotch veneer. The book matching of the veneers are masterful. The design and craftsmanship of this piece easily makes it attributable to Mr. Day. But to have pencil markings to additionally identify the table leave no room

Empire Dresser, mahogany, mirror veneer, ca. 1830, Antique, good condition
An Empire Bureau. Or chest of drawers made of mahogany in the early half of the 19th century. This is a grand piece of furniture that would look great in any large space-hallway, large master bedroom, dining room. We had it in our hallway in a 1803 house in upstate New York. There are four large drawers and three small drawers at the top. The largest drawer is directly below the three small top drawers, consistent with the style. Drawer fronts are a mirror veneer, rest of the wood is solid. The drawer pulls are brass. This is a solid, well-built dresser. It is heavy. It stands about 52 inches high, is about 47 inches wide and about 21 inches deep. The drawers are about 16 inches deep. The finish is in relatively good condition; there are scrapes, scuffs, nicks and scratches but it would not necessarily need any work. There is a crack in the ... morewood on one of the sides(visible in photo) The drawer slides could use some repair work, but the drawers function. I believe that the dresser is from the early half of the 19th century because the nails used on the back boards are type I cut(photographed) The back boards are soft wood with a rich brown patina on the back, the part exposed to air. They are very wide, one is 15 inches, the second largest is 14 inches(see photo) Will consider reasonable offers. No label to identify maker. Powered by The free listing tool.
