IT IS MADE OF WALNUT. ALL THE WOOD SURFACES HAVE BEEN FULLY RESTORED AND ARE IN OUTSTANDING CONDITION. ONE SOLID ANGLED PIECE OF FASCIA IS FINISHED ALL THE WAY AROUND. EXCELLENT QUALITY CARVED MAHOGONY ANTIQUE EMPIRE SOFA 1880-90
I had always loved this sofa-it had belonged to my mother since the 1960s. And previously it had belonged to my mother's best friend and her family. I don't have a good place for it, so I have to part with it. Please notice the great care taken by the upholsterer to match the floral designs on each seat and along the back, etc. Starting bid is far less than the estimated value of between $1200 to $3000, depending on the area in which it resides. An antique dealer, who is a friend, gave me information that I'm sharing below: Your sofa appears to be late Victorian from the pictures. It's definitely mahogany with a very nice ribbon grain to it. I worked on restoring several very similar ones. One of the problems inherent with the earlier Victorians(older than yours) was the legs would break in the area right where you show the ... morecloseup. Towards the late 1880's to 1890's. Which is what I believe yours is, they solved that problem. They did it by laminating 3 layers of wood in the legs, grain going different directions(like yours) so as not to split with the grain. Up for auction is this beautiful Victorian Rococo loveseat with a magnificent. Highly carved walnut frame. It measures approximately 40 inches high and 66 inches at its longest point. The seat height is 16 inches. The seat measures 21 inches deep. If you measure from where the back of the frame where it touches the wall, to the front of the seat, it measures approximately 30.5 inches deep. It has its original 4 casters. The springs are in good condition. And there are no tears in the fabric. It does have a spot with some light staining, which we never noticed until we were checking it closely for the description. There's one repair on the end of the apron, which can be seen in two of our pictures. It is a 2 inch by 2 inch by 1.5 inch triangle. This is not part of the leg, only a part of the apron. No reserve. This listing is for a mid-century. Vintage couch or sofa. Brand is A. Brandt Ranch Oak. It is so sturdy and well-made! It has the original fabric covering, which a blue/cream/ombre stripe style, please view photos. The photo of the back of the couch shows some yellow, but that is just the camera. The fabric looks itchy, but it is not. The cushions could use a good steam cleaning, to brighten, as the back of the couch looks brighter than the cushions. This well-made couch is so comfortable. It is sturdy, but easily moved, even on carpeting, as it has 4 rollers underneath. The sides of the couch are interesting with lattice-style design sides. Parts of the black covering on the bottom of the couch has ripped away from the staples, but we reattached some of it, but could use a few more staples to hold the black fabric more securely. This is a very nice sofa frame. Suitable for country or formal decor, nice with an English manor house look or Americana. It's all about what you use for upholstery. Right now, as it sits, everything but the springs will need to be replaced. This is the way to buy a sofa. I bought it for the way it sits. ALL of the old camelback sofas from the middle of the 20th century- and earlier- sit like a sofa should sit. I am just fed up with hearing about it's important that a sofa be good for lying down. Folks- if a sofa is any darn good, you won't have to lie down. It should sit so that you can read the paper or read a book for extended periods without needing to lie down or see a chiropractor- or both. Really. This is a standard 7 foot sofa and will need 13 or so yards to cover it, depending on what sort of a pattern you choose. It ... moresits just great, but is worn out. Don't even think about saving any of the stuffing, foam, or whatever. Really. All of these soft goods absorb their surroundings and although I am catching no odors from this piece of furniture, it will have taken on enough of its human- and maybe pet- surrounding over the last 60 plus years that YOUR pets will tune in and that's the end of your beautiful new upholstery. So, that's my expert advice on this excellent hardwood frame. It's hard to convey in the few characters that they allow in an ITEM TITLE when you have some peculiar circumstance. This black leather sofa designed by Robert Haussmann for Stendig was shipped from Italy around 1970 to my parents home in New York. My father was an architect. So he was pretty picky about design. The chrome-plated steel frame is in good condition. But the leather is distressed in places. The cushions are filled with down and feathers, and can be removed. Everything is original on the sofa. No restorations have been done. No replacement materials have been used. So the integrity of the piece is guaranteed. French Louis XVI Style Carved and Gilded Antique Settee(Sofa. Canape, Loveseat) Probably France. C. 1900-15 Item# 130001KKG27 This is a very fine French Louis XVI Style Antique Settee with Gilded Carved surfaces. Crafted during the first years of the 20th Century at the end of the Rococo Revival period, c. 1900-15. It is an exceptional piece in every way, the molding work on every exposed surface is simply above reproach. The crest rail is bowed with an unusual carved design at the apex, lifting in swirls and actually flowing up and over the back of the settee. This is flanked on each corner with highly detailed acorn finials over floral carvings that fall along the stiles. The arms are likewise decorated, the handholds with carved acanthus leaves, the arm supports with scaled molding over acanthus foliage at the knees. The modern upholstery ... moreis a soft yellow with collections of fruits and foliage throughout, a comfortable stuffed back and a somewhat more supportive and firm seat. The apron of the antique french settee is a complex infiniti-motif closed on each end with swirled-rosettes at the knees. The entire sofa resting over twist-turned tapered legs terminating in plain ball feet. This is a very fine antique french settee. Crafted entirely by hand with utmost precision and care during an important revival of the French styles. With a wealth of demand for revivals of the 18th Century works, many very high quality pieces were renewed during this era, much of it brought into the States to satisfy the significant demand of discerning clients during the period. No expense was spared in the crafting of this piece, and clearly it was well cared for over the years. This is an antique french settee you will treasure and actively use in your home for a lifetime.
