Nice luster, looks different in every kind of light. Glaze is nicely variegated- study photos to get the feel and look of this relatively heavy piece(for its size) Does not appear to be missing a lid- the way the opening was made, I do not believe this ever had a lid, at least not a ceramic one that would have been incorporated into the clay design when the piece was hand thrown. Looks like this crock could originate from the Catawba Valley Pottery, but just my opinion. Glaze& form reminds me a little bit of Pewabic Pottery pieces, but not iridescent. Not much wear given its age- glaze has rubbed off in a few small spots around the rim(see photo) but no serious chips or cracks. Bottom is unmarked. All sales are final- no returns. Bottom finish of Squaw has missing paint and is dark pottery. Wood Corks are in very good condition. Both pieces has JAPAN printed in Black Ink. The crevices of both pieces has the old aged stain(not crazing but dirty stain) should be cleaned but I will not do that. As I do not know what to use. No other damage found, just the aged staining and bottom of squaw I already mentioned. She has P on her front dress; he has S on left pant leg and both have 3 shaker holes in back. Antique Spongeware Pottery Double Salt & Pepper
A great piece of spongeware or spatterware double salt and pepper shaker. This has been in my collection for 40 years. And I need to slim down my items. In the 1960's and early 1970's Primitives were very popular and I collected granite ware, wood boxes, tins and blue was my color. I tried to collect some of the lovely blues, and well life has changed and so has my color palette. The photo does not pick us the detail well, and I can send more pics if necessary. The spatter patter is especially nice. On this piece, and the tin covers were the original ones to this set. The set measures 2 1/2" x 4" and is in mint condition, no chips, flecks, nicks, or crazing. The piece needs a good home.
