Sad irons got their name because sad means"heavy" They are very appropriately named. Although these irons were small, they were quite heavy. Sad irons were heated near an open fire or on the stove and their handles became red hot. Women tried wrapping aprons or towels around the handles, but still burned their fingers. The thought of ironing under these conditions is enough to make anyone"sad" This iron is a#6 iron. The face plate was left intact and shows natural patina. However. The top of the iron was repainted and used as a doorstop, then later a paperweight. It looks like the paint can be removed if the winning bidder wished to attempt to restore it to its natural condition. However, painted it does not look bad, in our opinion. It would make a lovely addition to your antique and vintage primitive collection. Sad" is an old word for solid/dense/heavy. Blacksmiths started forging simple flat irons in the late Middle Ages. Plain metal irons were heated by a fire or on a stove. Unfortunately. The metal handles also got hot when the iron was heated, and they had to be gripped with a thick cloth. Some irons had wooden handles that did not get hot. Some were fitted with slots for several irons, and a water-jug on top. At home. Ironing traditional fabrics without the benefit of electricity was a hot, arduous job. Beeswax prevented irons sticking to starched cloth. Constant care was needed over temperature. Experience would help decide when the iron was hot enough, but not so hot that it would scorch the cloth. In 1870 a detachable handle was patented in the US. In the late 19th century. Iron designs experimented with heat-retaining fillings. Designs of this period became more and more ingenious and complicated, with reversible bases, gas jets and other innovations.
