The set has not been used since about 1950 when my grandmother died. She got married 100 years ago and may have even inherited it from her mother as she was the only daughter. It sat on a knickknack shelf since then. It is obvious that the set was used at one time because some of the border paint has worn away. The salt shaker has larger holes than the one for pepper. This listing is for an Antique. Salt and Pepper Shaker Set. The shakers are round with paneled sides and a button top. The design is very unique with a background of pink peonies with blue and pink flowers and leaves. In the center of the shaker is a band of green and pink flowers with a delicate gold scroll with a yellow background. The tops and bottom both have detailed gold moriage. The porcelain is very delicate and light weight. The pieces are unmarked, but the porcelain and styling are indicative of pre-WWII Japan. The shakers measure 3 1/2" high. 2 1/4" in diameter at the base and weigh 4.1 oz as a set. The bottom of one shake is damaged as seen in the photos. However the visible portions on both are free of chips, cracks and fleabites. The foot of the one with damage has a bubble on the surface of the edge, which is painted ... moreindicating it is originally as such. Under the paint and glazes and my best guess is they are paint post indent scars or larger pieces of porcelain grit that fell out after molding. Since they are not stamped or marked they may have been sold as seconds because of these tiny minor flaws-it was a time of waste not want not and nothing was destroyed unless totally unsellable. Offered for your collecting enjoyment is this lovely pair of hand painted porcelain salt and pepper shaker I found on my last trip to France. Unmarked which was normal for such small pieces. We feel these are Limoges porcelain shakers. Very beautiful with hand painted pink flowers and green leaves on a soft multi pastel background. The shaker tops are painted in gold. They each have old cork stopers. They measure 2.5 inches tall and are in excellent condition for their great age. One has a tiny nip on the bottom inside rim and the other has a small line on the bottom rim. The colors are vibrant and the gold is in great condition. These individual exquisite salt cellars are made of the finest bone china- they're almost translucent. Salt cellars were used in fancy homes before salt shakers. Each place setting had its own salt cellar with a little bit of salt in the bowl that could be pinched and added to the food by the diner. They are hand-painted with delicate rose flowers. With yellow centers, green leaves, and gold trim. The detail is incredible and my camera does not capture how delicate fine the painting is. Please be sure to zoom in on the photos. Each has 3 toes(feet) that are in perfect shape and each toe is even highlighted in fine gold paint. There are no maker's mark on them so it's hard to tell exactly how old they are or where they came from for sure. But they did come from a family of German heritage.
