These belonged to my grandma and have been packed away in a trunk since her passing 25+ years ago. She was from Germany and may have brought these with her when she came or she got them because they say Germany on the bottom. The research that I did says that they are Pre-war. They are handpainted and they have the painter mark on the bottom. They are 3" tall and 2" wide. They are cute tigers in suits. These lived in her china cabinet and I do not know if they were used for salt and pepper or not. There is a cork inside one of them and no cork for the other. I will try to get the cork out. But I haven't figured out how to do that yet. I may not beable to do it. So it is an as is sale. I am hoping that a collector will want this unique pair for their collection. A charming set of very old salt and pepper shakers that measure 2.5" x 2" They are still functioning. But the holes are larger than modern shakers so need to use coarse salt and pepper rather than the boxed. This pair is not pristine. It shows its age and wear. The base of one is slightly cracked and there are aging spots throughout. The corks are not original and not interchangeable as the openings are different sizes. Each shaker has a chip under the rim. I've included many untouched photos. The condition is very visible in these. I am guessing these are from the early part of the last century based on others I've seen. Each side has one large thumb print and both are tapered down. They measure 1 3/4" square at the bottom and stand 2 1/2" tall. The box has no writing on it but I am sure it is the original box. Hand painted Antique Salt and Pepper Set. The back says"Hand Paint"and"Made in Japan" surrounding two interlocking triangles each containing a T. The set has not been used since about 1950 when my grandmother died. She got married 100 years ago and may have even inherited it from her mother as she was the only daughter. It sat on a knickknack shelf since then. It is obvious that the set was used at one time because some of the border paint has worn away. The salt shaker has larger holes than the one for pepper. These are a depiction of Red Rum Honeysuckle berries and leaves. The shakers are also artist signed. One is with the initials of G. A. C. The other has the last name spelled out in script and it reads G. A. Curran. The Bavaria mark is on both shakers with a logo as shown with an X and J and C. These are in great condition with gold gilded tops. The panels with the berries have a light salmon colored background behind the leaves and berries. These shakers measures approx. 2 1/4" tall and 3" in diameter. There is wear to the slip decoration. I noticed eight problems with each, mostly petals chipped, leaves chipped, some loss of white enamel and one bubble pop type pit. Very hard to see most except under close examination. They are painted in a dogwood pattern, three flowers each shaker done in pink and robin's egg blue. Overall good condition with no chips or cracks, and they are unmarked. Antique Nippon Hand Painted Salt and Pepper Shakers Up for auction is a beautiful antique salt and pepper shaker set. Stamped in blue on the underside of each shaker with the words Handpainted Nippon. The lovely floral pattern is gilt accented on a white background. This set is in very good used condition. With no chips, cracks, or crazing. The only flaw I found was one silver color"flea bite" mark about the size of a pencil point on one of the shakers. These shakers still have their original corks. This pretty porcelain pair dates from the early to mid 20th century. And were from the old Stouffer China of Chicago, according to the maker stamp on the bottom. Each is white with gold accents and a floral pattern hand painted and signed by Regina. Each is about 4 1/2 inches tall. They are in great shape for vintage. One was apparently chipped on its base at some point and repaired with glue. One has its cork. One does not. The dark red/orange edging around the bowl and bottom of the salt and pepper shakers and both shakers have the same color on the top. There is bold swirl decoration around top of shakers and between trim on the bottom. Both the bowl and shakers have embossed painting design of geisha girls. There are no makers mark on either item.
