Women simply wore pubic aprons also known as'caches sexesâ in various writings(literally- âto hide the sexâ) until approximately 1961, when governmental restrictions required women to be fully clothed. However the tradition continues in a number of ornate beaded forms worn today. Living in the area of the Mandara mountains. Matakam women of northern Cameroon wore pubic aprons made of small iron strips covering the sex and held in place by a belt of fiber. The Matakam are also known as'Kirdi' or'pagans' A name given to them by the Islamized Kanuri or Fulani who came into the area sometime during the 1600s. The Matakam or Kirdi live in small farming communities and are known for their arts of personal adornments, especially those made of iron including the'cache sexes, as well as necklaces, bracelets and other attachments worn on the belt supporting their'aprons' Composed of small iron strips the pubic aprons were worn by mature married women indicating their elevated status in Kirdi society. Beaded aprons have today replaced those of iron and are worn by women upon special occasions such as marriage or during the presentation of new born children. Geometric patterns found on the brightly colored beaded aprons reflect designs shared by a number of neighboring peoples. And it certainly would be worn as one, but I found almost the same piece in the book"Africa Adorned" by Angela Fisher, copyright 1984, where she showed a Kirdi woman wearing a"picuran" as they are called there, with a similar brass and copper plaque and chain hanging, but this one has metal"nail" forms between the red beads, which research shows to be"phallic" symbols, sometimes also made and used as currency items. Both Fisher in"Africa Adorned" and Lois Sherr Dubin in her book “The History of Beads� states that the cache-sexes “were worn by women and girls for protection and to attract attention. Different cache-sexe styles identify group affiliations. Age grades, and special conditions such as puberty, marriage, and widowhood. Are in wonderful shape, and have no dings(just look how nice the soles are in the first two photos. Faces look nice and the grooves are in excellent condition. For your consideration: men’s right-handed vintage Hogan Medallion Brass Cameo forged nine iron 2-E golf set and a PGA R-91 sand iron. Besides a few dings and nicks that are often associated with soft-forged irons. Club heads are in decent shape, don't have an excessive amount of chatter, face frosting looks nice, and the grooves are in very good condition(note: 5 iron has a ding on the leading edge that can be seen in the top of the last photo; also, the Equalizer has some nicks on the leading edge that can be seen in the bottom of the last photo. The 6 irons looks like it had a ding that was filed down, which I have circled in red in the second to last photo) Equipped with Hogan Apex 3 regular flex steel shafts that are pinned to the hosels(note: labels are in good shape) The length of the 5 iron is 37-7/8” note: my measurement was ... moretaken with a carpenters ruler along the back side of the shaft from the end of the grip to the sole of the club with its last groove parallel to a hard grounding surface) Avon Chamois grips will need to be changed for play(note: the 4 iron and Equalizer have Hogan Exclusive AMF Design grips that also will need to be changed for play) Ferules and thin detail trim rings are in very good shape and have the matching serial number G92831 for the 2-9 irons(note: Equalizer has no serial number which is normal. The letter“G” on some of the ferules looks like a number 8; however, I am certain that it is a factory thing and they all match. You can see an example of this in the third to last photo. When you zoom in, you can see that the letter G on the bottom ferule is actually different than the number 8) PGA R-91 sand iron is in very good shape for it’s vintage and has some slight lower groove wear which you might be able to see in the fourth to last photo.
