We are pleased to offer an antique mother of pearl dental lip depressor. Measuring 10.5 cm(4 and 1/8” Many collectors have seen J.D. Chevalier’s large adult lip depressor from the first half of the 1800’s. I believe this one to be for a child because of its smaller size. The standard adult depressor is cumbersome and would have been too large for a small child's lip. The manufacture of smaller tools for children is well known in 19 th century. Even when children were the target market as seen in sewing collectables where tiny scissors, thimbles and sewing sets where made for smaller hands. There are no makers or origin marks at all on the metal. Although it does not look as old as Chevalier's production. I am not an expert in dental collectables, but a local museum did agree that it looked just like a smaller version of their antique ... morelip depressors(they had not seen a small one before) I have never seen another in the past 15 years of active worldwide searching and I consider this an extremely rare item. The specialist collector will appreciate that opportunities to acquire these unusual items do not come around as often as it did in the past. Hopefully it will make some collector's day! SET 8 ROSEWOOD & BONE DENTAL TOOLS - LATE 18TH -EARLY 19TH CENTURY -RARE
You are bidding on a very early- late 18th to early 19th century-set of dental tools. Two are bone/ faux ivory" Four are bone/faux ivory" with either rosewood or lignum handles. I believe they are rosewood but just not sure. There's also a tool with a rosewood handle that I was not sure if it was for dental work or not but it came with the set so going out with the others. Lastly, there is a small hammer with the head made of rosewood( I believe but not positive) and the handle made of another kind of wood. All in good condition for the age, they were obviously used but not abused. They are all approx. 6 1/2 in. in length- a few a tad longer- a few a tad shorter. Contents: Inside the box there are approx. 350 individual burs of different kinds. Originally the box contained 36 dozen. Some of the packages of burs have never been opened. Most have been opened but many look like they have never been used. There are some that are rusty. This is probably not the original contents of the box but it is what was in it when I purchased it. Antique vintage dental tools extraction teeth pull scrape syringe
From a local estate of a second generation dentist who retired in 1977. I think these would have been his fathers dentistry tools seeing that there is a tool in this lot with a patent date of 1894. They are terrifying and vicious looking. They are in relatively good shape. They all open and close. Not all rusted shut. These were stashed away in a tin box in his large dentist tool box in the basement of his home. Please look at all the clear pictures. This is a set of 16 dental tools(housed in a nice leather case) manufactured by The Cleveland Dental Mfg. Company. It was awarded to Vivian David Cooper of Vanderbilt University in 1924 for"Best Amalgam Fillings. The tools appear unused. All tools are marked Cleve-Dent. Leather case is roughly 3.25" X 7.5" in the closed position. As you can see in the photos. The edges of the flaps that protect the tools are worn. Snap closure works as intended.
