Features a square base with copper band accent. I am assuming it was on a fence post or ornate decorative accent. It appears as though it was glued back on. The pointed spear on top of the ball is 8" high and the base has has an inside dia. of 4" x 1 1/4" deep along with two square head set screws to secure it in place. They remind me of the old Victorian style- maybe even a little gothic style flavor to them ~ they are so very pretty. They all have some rust on them and the one on the far left is quite rusty and has not been painted. Cast iron Finial from the Connecticut State Capitol building. A very rare piece of history- removed from the Connecticut state capitol in the late 1970's early 1980's during a major renovation of the 1879 gothic victorian grand building constructed in Bushnell Park(formerly Trinity college property) Prior to the construction of this building- Connecticut had two state capitals: one in New Haven. One in Hartford- after centuries of the state government alternating it's location yearly- a legislative act was passed locating the seat of state government in Hartford(of course the citizens of Hartford sweetened the pot with a $500,000 gift towards the construction of a new building! A site was chosen and paid for by the state- 6 years of construction overruns. And finally in 1879 a brand new $3.2 million dollar building was opened- ... morethe building was one of the top ten architectural wonders of it's period. A century of wear and tear caught up with the building in the 1970's and luckily the leaders of the time thought better than to tear it down- instead they spent close to $20 million to refurbish the building. This cresting- original to the building was made by Taylor& Fenn in East Windsor. CT- and recast in the early 1980's(by the same company! for the replacement iron was put back on the roof! provenance can be provided in a book commissioned by the Old State House association! I was using these finials in landscape garden beds- they have a great look to them. SELLING THIS PIECE AS IS- ONE BROKEN FLOWER! The finial measures 36" tall x 12" wide x 2 7/8" thick. This is a nice bald eagle finial. It is made of cast iron and has a 3/4" threaded hole for the pole. It is in good condition. c1879 CAST IRON oak leaves HARTFORD CT CAPITAL building great 4 projects 33"h
cast iron Finial from the Connecticut State Capitol building. A very rare piece of history- removed from the Connecticut state capitol in the late 1970's early 1980's during a major renovation of the 1879 gothic victorian grand building constructed in Bushnell Park(formerly Trinity college property) Prior to the construction of this building- Connecticut had two state capitals: one in New Haven. One in Hartford- after centuries of the state government alternating it's location yearly- a legislative act was passed locating the seat of state government in Hartford(of course the citizens of Hartford sweetened the pot with a $500,000 gift towards the construction of a new building! A site was chosen and paid for by the state- 6 years of construction overruns. And finally in 1879 a brand new $3.2 million dollar building was opened- ... morethe building was one of the top ten architectural wonders of the period. A century of wear and tear caught up with the building in the 1970's and luckily the leaders of the time thought better than to tear it down- instead they spent close to $20 million to refurbish the building. This cresting- original to the building was made by Taylor& Fenn in East Windsor. CT- and recast in the early 1980's(by the same company! for the replacement iron was put back on the roof! provenance can be provided in a book commissioned by the Old State House association! This lot constist of 5(five) cast iron leaves- these pieces were used to affix the iron cresting to the roof. The roof has a variety of different pitches. Thus the'feet' here have different angles.
