The nomadic lifestyle of the pastoral Turkana peoples of northwestern Kenya and their custom of wearing elaborate coiffures made the use of light, portable ... moreheadrests a necessity. This headrest is a typical design used by the Turkana people and dates from the early 20th century. The wood is worn to a smooth patina, shows appropriate wear for the age and is undamaged. It is unstained and the original leather thong handle is attached. 7" high x 6.75" wide x 5.25" deep.

This is a very nice Vintage Kenyan Turkana Wood Headrest with a tension rope made from animal gut or leather. Approximately 6” tall and 7” across at the ... morebase. The handcrafted wood shows a very nice grain pattern and evidence of age wear. This beautifully sculptural headrest was cherished and used by nomadic tribesmen of Kenya. It has a rich patina as evidence of its dark brown/black color. These surfaces were rubbed with oils, pumices, and other organic materials. Another reason for their dark color was their placement near a smoking fire. Like other headrests, these kept men's ornately coiffured hairstyles while sleeping. The leather strap was used when traveling. This piece is also very sculptural. Please use the photos as reference and ask any questions.

The Turkana live in the Turkana district of Rift Valley. In Kenya. Their exact number is not known. Estimates run from the old figure of 250, 000 down to 340,000. They are Kenya’s third-largest ethnic group of Nomadic peoples. Like their neighbors the Maasai, cattle are their primary wealth. They always move from place to place in the search of good pasturage, water and fresh vegetation for the cattle. Many Turkana families are now engaged in agriculture and fishing. While there are a quite few art-producing peoples of Kenyan origin who have contributed significantly to the recognition of East African art, the Turkana, along with their closely related neighbors the Maasai, are arguably among the most important of them all. In fact, much of the art from the Turkana region is composed of a wide variety of everyday objects out of wood, leather and gourd for milk, but in their hands many of these utilitarian pieces have risen to levels of beauty unparalleled in East Africa
