This elongated bronze alloy canoe depicts figures relating to the story of the Dogon genesis in African tribal art. It illustrates the story of the mythical ... moreDogon ark led by Nommo and sent by the creator god Amma to populate and reorganize the earth. The crocodile-shaped creature that forms the bowand stern represents ayo geu , a crocodile that killed Nommo. The seven figures seated in the boat are the original Dogon ancestors, who are frequently found on other sculpted works of African Dogon art, such as attic doors. The sides are decorated with motifs depicting snakes, another element of the bestiary linked to mythology. The Dogon are a people renowned for their cosmogony, their esotericism, their myths and legends.

 Rare, Antique African Grannery Door/Dogon, Mali/Figures, Breasts/ 10"x5"
Rare. Antique African grannery door from the Dogon in Mali, probably I was told, over 100 years old. Beautiful patina all over and original wear shown on it. Stylized figures on the edges and images of breasts in the center; Small. 5" w x 10" but a great piece! Door was bought from my African dealer friend who just returned from a trip to West Africa(with many more items still to arrive) He told me that he hasn't seen an"original" door of this type in a very long time and said this was a rare find for him. Even though he has"pickers" always on the lookout for good quality pieces. I bought the two he found so check my listings for a larger one as well. gsrx_vers_486(GS 6.5.1(486)

Dogon Granary Door, Mali, African Tribal Creations, art, nommo, ancestor, Dogo
An African Tribal Creations gallery NO RESERVE AUCTION 0 false 18 pt 18 pt 0 0 false false false Despite loads of beautiful sculpture. The Dogon people of Mali continue to be most famous for their elegantly carved doors, some of which can be truly spectacular in size and detail. The Dogon live in an arid region near the Niger river, backed by huge cliffs, a spot chosen for defensive reasons due to the regional tension created by their refusal to convert to Islam. Due to this relative isolation, they have been able to maintain their artistic traditions over the years despite the pressures of encroaching Islamic culture. At nearly half a million people, the Dogon were once primarily hunters, but have taken up agriculture over time to support their growing numbers. Millet and other crops are painstakingly raised on their arid fields and stored ... morein granaries generally connected to or very proximal to their homes. An incredibly artistic people, many functional objects around their homes are embellished in fantastic fashion, the most famous of which, are their incredible doors. There are two common door types used by the Dogon. That for their home itself, and that for their granary, the grain storage structure wherein their food stores are kept. The symbolic figures adorning it can be ancestors, supernatural beings, even breasts(a symbol of fertility) and are generally intended to keep the entrance sealed from intruders, thieves, and animal pests. This granary sized door is beautifully carved to feature numerous protective ancestral figures, as well as several dimensional geometric shapes. As is commonly the case, it is heavy for its size and sturdily constructed. The piece is in good overall condition, having only minor age-related cracking, and markings, which should be considered normal. It is otherwise free from serious breaks or repairs. The hinges seem to have minimal wear due to the fact that glass bottles are often cemented into the wall construction and used as a point of articulation for the door hinges. Th

Dogon Granary Door, Mali, African art, Dogo Burkina Faso wood Nommo Habbe kibisi
0 false 18 pt 18 pt 0 0 false false false Despite loads of beautiful sculpture. An incredibly artistic people, many functional objects around their homes are embellished in this fantastic fashion. There are two common door types used by the Dogon. That for their home itself, and that for their granary, the grain storage structure wherein their food stores are kept. The symbolic figures adorning it can be ancestors, supernatural beings(Nommos) even breasts(a symbol of fertility) and are generally intended to keep ... morethe entrance sealed from intruders. This door was produced from two separate pieces, fused in the center by metal fasteners, and is slightly folded as a result. The latch is in excellent shape and still fully functional(these are often broken in many of these doors that make it stateside) as are both hinge points, which are often placed into the earthen walls utilizing bottlenecks to provide a smooth hinge action. Some insect damage exists on the backside, which has been long-since arrested, and two mounting screws have been placed and a wire attached for hanging the piece. This is a nice Dogon door that appears to have relatively extensive age on it. A really nice piece already prepared for display. The mask's dimensions are 17.5" x 12" x 1" Medium: Wood. Metal(fasteners) We cannot offer a 100% guarantee of any mask's traditional use unless stated in the auction. This piece displays strong signs. And we do know for a fact that it originated in West Africa, but we don't have an exact provenance on the piece. STAND NOT INCLUDED IN SALE.
