Colonialism put new western currencies oon the market and ends the use of local currencies which resulted in the scattered nature of the iron currencies such as this. A similar currency is attr

Some Aqua'ba are highly abstracted while a few others are carved naturalistically. What distinguishes this figure uniquely as Fante is the stylized headdress of strands of hair being brought to a point, which can be seen among the Fante today. The fact that the wood was not painted and left in its natural wood color also indicates coastal Fante origin. Recommended Reading: Mato. D. Aspects: Akan Cultures in Ghana.

Benin City was the center of power for the Edo people and the place of residence for the Oba. The ruler. This is a head of an Oba based upon a 14th-15th century original and is a stylized portrait of a man at the Court of Benin. That this is a replica cannot be doubted. But what is important to note is that the skill of the Nigerian bronze and brass casters of today who cast this head continue a tradition nearly 500 years old at Benin and have not lost their skill in producing interesting works of art. Benin heads were kept on altars. The hole in the head was to support an ivory tusk. Intricately carved. For exquisite examples of heds, and an article on them. It is not easy to a function of this board. Could it be a divination board? There is not traces of rubbing to confirm this function. It could not be a stool because it's too slow. It is possible that this could be a low headrest. Despite its unusually large size, this is a well-carved example. Luba always carve their headrests with great ... morecare reflecting the importance of these artifacts to the owner. Headrests like this were personal items used by their owners as pillows to protect their neck and for their comfort while resting or lying on the mat. They were also used to protect their ceremonial coiffure. As François Neyt noted. Symbolically these headrests are the support of life itself. They also prevent bad dreams. The Luba excel at the veneration of feminine beauty and motherhood. And much of their skillfully crafted artworks, like this exquisite headrest, reflect this ideal. The history of the Luba can be traced back at least 500 years. And they have dominated much of southern part of the Congo during most of this time span. At the height of their expansion their empire stretched east all the way to Lake Tanganyika. They are still a large culture, numbering about 1,000,000, and their influence remains significant. While there are dozens of art-producing peoples of Congolese origin who have contributed significantly to the recognition of West African art, the Luba, along with their closely related neighbors the Hemba, are debatably the most important of them all, with many masterpieces scattered t

Ph.D. In sub-Saharan Africa. Where representative art has flourished for centuries, carvers and crafts people have typically taken for their subjects human figures, animals, plants, and elements of the natural world. Abstract art, meanwhile, has remained marginal. The textiles of the BaKuba(Kuba) people of the Democratic Republic of Congo are an exception. Although part of a tradition that stretches back 400 years, Kuba textiles have a strikingly modern look. They use improvised systems of signs, lines, colors, and textures, often in the form of complex geometric rectilinear patterns. Their appliqués are reminiscent of works by 19th- and 20th-century masters like Matisse, Picasso, Klee, Penck, and Chellida. This is no c
