Impressive African Yaka Ceremonial Mask from DR Congo. These masks were generally used by an important chieftain for initiation or circumcision rites. ... moreThe masks were typically zoomorphic in nature and were used only once. This is a rather good one with visible color. Cloth hat and raffia surround. The post in the back was used to hold the mask to the face as the chieftain danced around the initiate. Good condition. A slight tear in the top of the discus on the top of the hat but about one of the best I have seen. I will consider any reasonable offer.

The distinctive art forms of the Songye are universally admired. With major collections and museums having at least one example. The actual number of forms is somewhat limited, with masks and power figures dominating. There are smaller prestige carvings of great beauty, however. The offered example is one of its kind and would stand well in any collection. The Songye and Luba share a common mythical ancestor known as"Kongolo. and their history can be traced back almost 500 years. The founders of the Songye are thought to have originated in the Shaba province, an area littered with small lakes. This happened to be in the heart of the old Luba Empire. Domination by the Luba led them to relocate to their present homelands, on the left bank of the Lualaba River. Damage/Repair, stain. Shallow cracks, chips, worn patina, Certificate of Authenticity Available! Additional Information: This extraordinary carved mask with a transverse crest ... morewith brightly painted rays and the dramatic rounded eyes and square mouth mask is interesting in that it sets a problem of identification. Masks with these markings have been attributed in the past to the Tetela or Sungu people. A Tetela sub-group, neighbors to the Songye. However recent scholarship attributes such masks to the Songye people and denies the existence of masks among the Tetela. See De Husch, L. ‘Beauty is elsewhere: Returning a verdict on Tetela masks.’ In Objects: Signs of Africa. 1995. pp. 175-194. It is probable that such a mask was inspired by the Songye masks The miter-like form on the top. As well as the squared mouth recall some Songye mask from a localized identification to a Songye Tempa sub-group. If really Tetela-Sungu this should be considered as new forms of art among these peoples demonstrating a strong Songye influence. This mask reflects some of this crossing of stylistic boundaries possibly showing Songye style and other influences. If truly Songye, this mask would indeed be a variant or late style of this particular type of Songye mask. This is a late example of its kind that was probably used during the initiation and circumcisio

At the height of their expansion their empire stretched east all the way to Lake Tanganyika. They are still a large culture, numbering about 1,000,000, and their influence remains significant. While there are dozens of art-producing peoples of Congolese origin who have contributed significantly to the recognition of West African art, the Luba, along with their closely related neighbors the Hemba, are debatably the most important of them all, with many masterpieces scattered t
