Zulu Wars period. C.1879, collected by a British soldier. Large size, 6 7/8" height. Wood body made in two pieces to allow hollowing and secured with wood pegs. Integral suspension ear. The entire surface decorated with panels of incised beaded lines. The spout made of brass, evidently from a British cartridge, and decorated in two ranks of interrupted lines. Original cork stopper. Fine antique Zulu carved wooden spoon
Fine antique Zulu carved wooden spoon Zulu spoons were carved by men only. Out of a variety of hard and soft woods indigenous to the KwaZulu area. They were used with great formality. Each spoon had a handwoven basketry holder. Made by women. Spoons had to be placed in a specific pattern around a communal food dish. And not left standing in it, to avoid sympathetic magic-food sticking in one's stomach. In households with more than one wife. Each would have commissioned for her a set of spoons. A young bride could not share the milk and meat of her husband's home until the gift of a goat had been exchanged between her husband's and father's families. The goat was known as the"goat of the spoon. for with it was given the spoon with which the wife would eat sour milk and other food in her husband's household. 29cm long ... moreDue to upcoming E-bay policy changes I have moved UK postal arrangements to either; a Royal Mail‘signed for’ basis or Collect+ as a trackable courier. Regrettably this has led to an increase in postal charges. But I hope you will agree that it operates to protect you, the item and me. Non-UK arrangements will continue to be agreed dependent on destination and customer needs. If you wish to make alternate UK shipping arrangements please do not hesitate to contact me.
