The Igbo people are from around the Cross River area of the Niger River Delta. Southern Nigeria. Igbo artists are famous for intricately carved& painted wooden sculptures, large standing sculptures representing deities, terra cotta figures, masks, and much more. They used coils of various metals for currency. This one is a rare 18th Century piece. Weighing 5 pounds, and having the horizontal length of 5" 3 1/4" high, and 3 1/2" wide. The Mumuye are an agricultural people and this was probably used in the fields. I don't know if it continued it's use or was used as currency. Trade. It is a tribal item used by African tribes for trade especially the Nigerian Benue. It measures 36 inches long. The widest part is about 5 1/2 inches across. The long handle is about 1 1/2 inches by 1 1/2 inches at the top. The handle has an open back and sometimes this was for inserting a wooden extension. This is a hand forged piece with an interesting primitive design. It is in very good condition with normal aging and use marks for something of this age and material.
