Title, Brass Spiral Currency Bracelet Nigeria African, Type of Object, Brass bracelet/ Currency, Country of Origin, Nigeria. Niger Delta and the Cross River Region, Materials, Brass(unknown metal content) Approximate Age, Unknown, Dimensions, 3 inches interior diameter. 1 inch wide. See picture with penny for size comparison. Overall Condition, Poor to fair. Most of our pieces have spent decades on at least two continents. And have been treasured by several owners.  Small splits, scrapes and cracks are a normal part of their patina attesting to their age and extensive use. We examine each piece carefully when we receive it and report any damage we find in our listings. Please look carefully at the pictures which may also reveal condition and damage. Damage/Repair, Heavy oxidation. Tarnishing, and general wear, Additional ... moreInformation: The origin of this brass or copper alloy coiled bracelet could be located in Nigeria. Probably in Cross River region. The brass or copper-alloy works are in fact stylistically located to a shrine and town rather than to single ethnic group. Numbers of copper-alloy bracelets, manilas, torques, figures and animal skulls have been found and in the past have been generally attributed to the “Lower Niger Bronze Industry”, after this original appellation by W. Fagg(1963) Bracelet forms such as this preceded European contact. As noted by Peek and Nicklin(2002:54) Portuguese traders developed their copper-alloy manilla forms after bracelet prototypes found at Obolo, a shrine and burial place for the Obolo or Andoni people. Large ones twisted and knotted were worn during funerals on wrists of ankles. Small ones like this example were stored as currencies and used for exchange. Recommended Reading: Anderson. G.P. and P. Mumuye Forged Iron Currency Nigeria African
Title, Mumuye Forged Iron Currency Nigeria African Type of Object, Weapon/Currency, Country of Origin, Northern Nigeria, People, Mumuye, Materials, Iron, Approximate Age, Unknown Dimensions, 16 inches H. x 1.25 inches, Overall Condition, Good, Damage/Repair, Rusted surface/ some oxidation, Additional Information: A forged iron currency from the Mumuye people who live in Nigeria and along the border with Cameroon. This currency has a diamond-like design in the middle and narrow bars in both ends. These curious currency pieces are thought to originate in a remote part of Northern Nigeria. A confluence of obscure. Small cultures have lived in this area since the Fulani expansions of the 17th and 18th centuries. Among them are the Mumuye, Chamba, Jukun, Montol, Fulani, and Goemai. Though these metal currencies can be traced to the area, it is ... morenot known for sure who produced them. Despite the fact that they were used by the Mumuye as currency on special occasions, most likely in bridal negotiations. The arts of Nigeria are among the strangest and most fascinating in all of Africa. The high degree of abstraction used on most metal objects has made them popular with collectors. Though most texts mention the peoples living in the area, there is little firm scholarship about them. 78531* All content. ANTIQUE AFRICAN ART COILED COPPER IGBO MANILLA BRACELET CURRENCY NIGERIA
GJPaw Auctions is pleased to offer an Antique Coiled Copper Manilla or Coiled“Bracelet” Currency. This particular piece is from the Igbo people of Central Nigeria and is made of copper. Known as the“red gold” of Africa. It measures 8 inches in width by 3 inches in diameter(20.32 cm by 7.62 cm) To create some of these bracelets. The artisan poured molten metal directly into a cast in the ground called a puddle mold. As the metal cooled, it was wrapped into a circular shape and often even fitted directly to the wearer's body. The bracelet shows wear consistent with the mid-20th century, including an overall patina of oxidization which is natural with copper. A superb collector’s item, it would be a perfect compliment in any collection of currency, metal sculpture or colonial artifacts and comes with a specially made iron museum stand. It ... moreis guaranteed authentic. One of the more unusual types of African art is“currency. Currency appears in a wide variety of shapes and forms. Usually made of iron and copper, the metals most valued in this area of the world. African currency is not used like paper currency, although it does represents wealth and an abundant lifestyle. Among tribal cultures in Africa, currency could also be used for major purchases such as land or animals, or to signify a transfer of wealth at major events, such as birth, coming of age, marriage, or death. Representing stored family wealth. Ornaments were usually large and heavy and were worn by people of high status throughout Igboland. Most African currency forms were developed from traditional metal objects that were already in use such as weapons. Tools, bracelets and anklets. While some continued to be functional for work or decorative purposes, most evolved into"pure" currency, deliberately unusable except as objects recognized, prized, and accepted as payment. Aside from their intrinsic value. They were also valued for their artistry as can be seen in the extraordinary beauty of the example on offer. GJPaw Auctions has been in the

Found in Nigeria The copper-alloy works are in fact stylistically located to a shrine and town rather than to single ethnic group. Numbers of copper-alloy bracelets. Manilas, torques, figures and animal skulls have been found and in the past have been generally attributed to the “Lower Niger Bronze Industry”, after this original appellation by W. Fagg(1963) Bracelet forms such ... moreas this preceded European contact. As noted by Peek and Nicklin(2002:54) Portuguese traders developed their copper-alloy manila forms after bracelet prototypes found at Obolo, a shrine and burial place for the Obolo or Andoni people. Twisted and in this case also knotted were worn during funerals on wrists of ankles. This bracelet could be part of burial material found close to the area of the shrine identified as Yok-Obolo where the town of Obolo was a principle suppliers of copper alloy cast bracelets, manilas and toques to the region. Barbot wrote from Old Calabar, The English and Dutch import a great deal of copper in small bars round and equal about 3 feet long weighing about a pound and a quarter, which the Blacks of Calabar work with much art, splitting the bar into 3 parts from one end to the other, which they polish as fine as gold and twist the 3 pieces together very ingeniously like cords to make what sorts of arm rings they please. He also said that these copper bars, as was also the case with iron bars, were trading currency, i.e. were used only in transactions between Europeans and natives, the latter working them into various objects such as arm rings me

Mumuye Forged Iron Currency Nigeria Africa SALE WAS $90.00
Title, Iron Currency, Type of Object, Weapon/Currency, Country of Origin, Northern Nigeria, People, Mumuye, Materials, Iron, Approximate Age, 20th century, Dimensions, 15.25 inches H. x 1.75 inches, Overall Condition, Good, Damage/Repair, Rusted surface/some oxidation, Additional Information: A forged iron currency from the Mumuye people who live in Nigeria and along the border with Cameroon. Though these metal currencies can be traced to the area, it is not known for sure who ... moreproduced them. 71638* All content.
