Antique Namji Doll Namchi Female Fertility Beaded Cameroon African Art Description: V intage Namji/Namchi beaded African doll that has been mounted on ... morean acrylic base for display. Small beads on body appear to have been strung and then cemented to body appearing very old and primitive. One of the more interesting dolls I have see in a while. Namchi(Namji) dolls. Among the Namchi people of Cameroon, unadorned dolls made by blacksmiths are played with by young children. When beads, cowrie shells, bells, coins, and other ornaments are added, however, the doll becomes a surrogate baby for a woman who is having difficulty getting pregnant. The woman treats the figure like a baby, feeding it and carrying it on her back. The Namchi/Namchi group lives in the north west of Cameroon and is famous for its geometrical carved and highly decorated dolls. The girls learn their motherly duties by playing with them. Usually they always carry the dolls around with them. Feeding them and telling them stories from the old ones before going to bed. Condition: Good condition considering previous owner has written on bottom 100+ years. Also marked on tape on base is namji doll, cameroon. There is some breakage at top of head where beads attach but otherwise in quite fine condition. Approx. Measurements: 9" including base. Made in: Cameroon. According to previous owner. Color: Dark brown with yellow and red beads. Be sure to check out my other vintage items on sale: Click on pictures to SUPERSIZE- Please note in bidding. Within the Bamum complex there are numerous smaller ethnic groups, which are loosely affiliated with one another and share many historical and political similarities while retaining separate identities. All members of this group originally came from an area to the north and migrated in various complex patterns throughout the last several centuries. Fulani traders moving steadily southwards into Cameroon forced the Bamum into their current location during the 17th century. The Bamum are also one of the first peoples in Africa to develop a writing system under the auspices of King Njoya at the end of the 19th century. Njoya was able to maintain his status as a ruler under German indirect colonial rule but was forced into exile when the French took over in 1916. The kingship has since been restored. The peoples of the Grasslands reserve the highest allegiance for their lineage ancestors. Ancestral spirits are embodied in the skulls of the deceased ancestors. The skulls are in the possession of the eldest living male in each lineage, and all members of an extended family recognize the skulls as common heritage

Apron/ Kirdi Cache-Sexe African Beaded Apron - Cameroon 10"by 18
This old beaded apron. Known as a cache-sexe, was once used by the women of the Kirdi and Fulani Tribes of Cameroon, West Africa as their only article of daily clothing. The name literally means"to hide the sex" Beaded aprons long ago replaced the original pieces of iron or other metals and are still worn today on important occasions. This piece is fully intact, and displays wonderful telltale signs of use and obvious wear. Measurements are approximately 17 1/2" long by 6 1/2" wide with a 2" beaded fringe. This is an authentic Kirdi cache-sexe African beaded apron that I obtained from African traders a trip a few years ago to Cameroon. The Kirdi. From the Cameroon, create cache-sexes, worn by women, for protection and to attract attention. Different cache-sex styles identify group affiliations, age grades, and special ... moreconditions such as puberty, marriage, and widowhood. The Cameroon government has long outlawed the wearing of cache-sexes, but the practice continues under the cover of long robes. The glass beaded aprons reveal a variety of chevron and triangular patterns. It is claimed that the lower portion of the apron is deliberately cut(or torn) on a wedding night to symbolize the consummation of the marriage. Cache-sex pubic jewelry. Called pikuran by the Kirdi, is traditionally worn by women in place of clothing. Worn to attract the eye, it may also serve as form of protection against evil, like the penis shields of woven fiber and calabash shell that used to be worn by the Kirdi men. Only in the vary remote mountain villages do women still wear cache-sex jewelry every day, and it is usually only the older generation who do so.
