Akan Ashanti figurative goldweight from Ghana Brass Bronze 3 of 5
Vintage Akan gold weight purchased in Accra. Ghana in late 70s. Most likely one of the reproductions made for the tourist trade and modeled on a very small number of original erotic gold weights. These are rare and normally sell for $1000 or more at auction. 2" high. 875" wide, 1" deep. Gold weights are not made of gold but were used in the trade of gold. Until the end of the nineteenth century. Gold(sika) was the currency of the Asante/Ashanti, Fante, Baule and other Akan peoples of Ghana. Once Europeans made contact, they began calling the Ghanaian coast"The Gold Coast, but commerce in gold dust predates the arrival of the Portuguese. It began in the late 14th century, when Arabs established trade routes across the Sahara desert. This contact resulted in a need for an accurate system of measurement. From about 1400 until ... morethe arrival of the Portuguese, the Islamic ounce, based on the Byzantine and Roman ounce, was used, as well as another Islamic measure called the mithqal. With the Portuguese came the Portuguese ounce. And toward 1600 the Dutch introduced the heavier troy ounce. An Akan trader therefore had to have several sets of weights, one for each system. Most people engaging in trade owned a set of weights ranging in appearance from small geometrically patterned weights to complex figurative and representational weights. Using his own weights on a scale kept the transaction fair, and a trader knew the exact weight of his own gold weights. Cast in the lost wax technique these small sculptures served to facilitate trade while depicting Akan values characterized through proverbs or popular saying or simply showing people in normal activities. The Lost Wax Method is an exceptionally labor intensive process where a wax mold is formed by hand over an open fire until the mold is exactly as intended. The wax is then dipped into very fine powdered black mud several times; being allowed to harden between applications; and forming a clay casting around the mold. The clay is then heated until wax
