Collected by us from a village near Niable, Cote D'ivoire. It has the very old traditional style characteristics with the Ashanti comb and has been well used. This beautiful mask from the Baule people of the Ivory Coast falls ... moreinto a special grouping known as‘portrait masks’ Called“ndoma” by the Baule. They are said to portray an honored person of the village who is celebrated during a ceremonial dance known as“Mblo” It is an aesthetic performance in which this beautifully carved mask would be worn with a multicolored costume and danced in the most graceful manner by either the person it represents or a relative. The costume would have been attached to the mask by cords that were threaded through the holes at the back of the mask. The“Mbola” dance reflects feminine virtues including graceful movements and elegant dancing steps and celebrates her beauty. These masks are danced to entertain during days that the Baule do not work and they will also appear to honor important visitors to the village. This well used and classic mask recalls the artistry of the Baule artists of the past. Throughout time, spanning across divergent cultures and civilizations, the ram has been a traditional symbol of male fertility. The power and majesty of this beast has been long revered by mankind, and this was especially true of the Baule tribe who identified the ram and their tribal symbol. Masks are commonly used among many African cultures to facilitate the bond between the people and their ancestors and divinities. Masks instill social order. And can bring forth prosperity as well as misfortune. They are used in ceremonies of rites of passage and are usually accompanied by elaborate music and choreography. Among the Baule, who are believed to over a million people, there are two general forms of masks: animal and human. Music played on special instruments, and, ideally, the jojoyous consumption of a great deal of palm wine. Goli can be performed both as an entertainment and for the funeral of important men. The very characteristic, round-shaped“lunar” goli is surmounted by two horns. It was borrowed from the Wan for a celebration adopted by the Baule after 1900. Celebrating peace and joy, they would sing, dance, and drink palm wine. In the procession, the goli preceded the four groups of dancers, representing young adolescents. The goli would be used on the occasion of the new harvest, the visit of dignitaries, or at the funerals of notables. Boxes for the mouse oracle(in which sticks are disturbed by a live mouse, to give the augury) are unique to the Baule, whose carvers also produce heddle pulleys, combs, hairpins, and gong mallets. The Baule are members of the Akan peoples. Who inhabit Ghana and Côte d'Ivoire. During the 18th century, the Baule people migrated westward from Ghana when the Asante rose to power.
