Worn areas, lost of paint and pigment, age cracks, several age cracks tribally repaired, overall condition very good. Thank you and please view my other items. BACKGROUND Today. The Baga people occupy the northern coast of Guinea and the southern coast of Guinea-Bissau. They live in the marshy area flooded six months of the year, during which time the only way to get around is by a dugout canoe. They live in villages divided into two to four quarters, which are in turn divided into five or six clans. Traditionally, the village is headed by the eldest member of each clan. The men fish and grow cola nuts; the women grow rice. Spiritually, they believe in a single god, known as Kanu, assisted by a male and female spirits. The only fundamental ritual is initiation, which takes place every twenty-four years. Before burial, the dead are displayed in a sacred wood and their belongings are buried. Baga had rich traditions of multifunctional masks and sculpture, many of which were suppressed with the advent of Islam. The best known of these is the massive Nimba(or Dumba) ma

On both sides of the Niger River the Igbo number some ten million individuals. Mainly farmers and merchants, they also hunt and fish. They are subdivided into thirty-three subgroups and are spread out among about two hundred villages scattered through the thick forest or semi-fertile marshland. Only on the northern and western edges of the area, under influence from Igala and Benin, are hereditary rulers found. The heads of families form the council of elders, which shares its power with numerous secret societies. These societies exercise great political and social influence. They are highly hierarchical, their members passing from one level to the next. There is strong social pressure toward individual distinction, and men can move upward through successive grades by demonstrating their achievements and their generosity. The lack of overall centralization among the Igbo-speaking peoples has been conducive to the development of a great variety of art styles and cultural practices. The earliest sculpture known from Igboland is from the village of Ibo Ukwu, where the grave of a man of distinction and a ritual store, dati

BACKGROUND The Tongwe reside along the shores of Land Tanganyika from the north to the south. They also live on the western side of the lake. Which is in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The Tongwe artistic style is related to those of the Tabwa and Bambe. Their masks characteristically have almond shaped eyes and mouths, and protruding ears, while their figures have shortened legs, an elongated torso framed by set-apart arms, stylized incised hands and a columnar neck supporting a rounded head which is often carved with large hollowed eyes reminiscent of the Bembe artistic tradition. Painter Fred Uhlman words- Most of the artists I admired. Picasso, Modigliani, Deraini, to mention only a few, had collected African art and had been profoundly influenced by it. Shortly afterwards I bought the Baule Fetish and the Baule bobbin which are still two of the finest pieces in my collection. The majority of their sculpture reflects their concern with fertility and children, and they are known best for their fertility dolls and maternity figures. Many Akan peoples make no great distinctions between Akuaba fertility images and figures of different configuration, size or material. Most figures are called Akuaba; there are also many small figures without"classic" Akuaba form but which are nevertheless used in identical or analogous situations. Their shrine sculptures are almost always female. All shrines are concerned either directly or indirectly with human fertility. Among the smaller sculptures is a chalk-whitened one which recalls the common practice of affecting powder-white skins for special days of worship and festivals to show reverence and devotion. Many cult images are similarly painted white. Standing female sculptures are sometimes carved with a child, but more commonly without. The standing female icon common in West African sculpture has various interpretations. A custom base is included with this piece. It is important to properly exhibit a beautiful piece of art. BACKGROUND Inhabiting the southeast of Tanzania and the northeast of Mozambique are about 500.000 Makonde, divided into matrilineal clans, each one comprising several villages. Clan members meet only for the ancestral cult and to celebrate initiations. The Makonde believe in a world of ancestor spirits and in malevolent spirits who make an appearance during the ceremonies that close initiation rites. According to legend, shortly after the Creation, the first man, wandering around outside the bush, sculpted a female figure out of wood, and the statue became a real woman who gave him many children and, after her death, became the venerated ancestress of the Makonde. This accounts for the ancestress cult as well as the profusion of sculpted female figures, kept in huts. During this intensive months-long ritual, girls and boys were provided with knowledge and skills essential to the Makonde way of life. The Makonde practice of carving protective ancestor figures predates the colonial era. Painter Fred Uhlman words- Most of the artists I admired. BACKGROUND The Kulango occupy a region in the Northwest Coast that borders Burkina Faso(to the north) and Ghana(to the east) The Kulango are matrilineal. They live in villages where family property is set according to lineage lines. The elders direct community life. Based around the agricultural calendar. In the past, from the seventeenth century until the Mandingo invasions, a Kulango king, installed at Bouna, ruled the kingdom for better or for worse through the mediation of princely families. His power was primarily felt in Bouna, a booming center of commerce dominated by Diula merchants. Following the conquest by the Mandingo, the monarchy was significantly diminished, rebounding in a final gasp as a tool of French colonial administration. Large migrations of Akan(seventeenth century) and Lobi(nineteenth century) coming from the east and north, also destabilized Kulango cultural unity. At present, the Kulango share numerous institutions and characteristics with ethnic groups, which, in search of arable ground, have gradually come to settle in the region. The once fertile Kulango region has become almost entirely bush; therefore, the Kulango and other group

Where representative art has flourished for centuries, carvers and crafts people have typically taken for their subjects human figures, animals, plants, and elements of the natural world. Abstract art, meanwhile, has remained marginal. The textiles of the BaKuba(Kuba) people of the Democratic Republic of Congo are an exception. Although part of a tradition that stretches back 400 years, Kuba textiles have a strikingly modern look. They use improvised systems of signs, lines, colors, and textures, often in the form of complex geometric rectilinear patterns. Their appliqués are reminiscent of works by 19th- and 20th-century masters like Matisse, Picasso, Klee, Penck, and Chellida. This is no coincidence: all of those artists were inspired by Kuba design! The most commonly known of the Kuba textiles are the cut-pile Shoowa or Kasai Velvets. Named after the river

Ph.D. In sub-Saharan Africa. Appliqué is the most popular weaving technique among the Kuba. To create an appliqué. Kuba artists use a stencil to cut decorative designs out of a brightly colored cloth, and then sew or apply the designs onto a cloth of a different color. The designs are then placed on top of yet another cloth. T

PUBLISHED Kuba Textile SUPERB NOBLEMAN'S CEREMONIAL SKIRT MAPEL 192"- 16'- 4.8m!
Published in" Kuba Textiles and Design" by Elizabeth S. Bennet and Niani Batulukisi. Ph.D. copyright 2009, ISBN#978-0-9816267-1-0, photographed and illustrated as Fig.14 on page 25. This is a Superb Kuba Nobleman's Ceremonial Garment of exceptional length. A wraparound skirt or Mapel. Constructed and made to be worn only on ceremonial occasions. The distinct style of the garment. Comprised of long rectangular strips of individual pieces sewn into rows, with wonderful abstractions, is a style of the Ngoombe and Dengese popular at Court from antiquity. Not readily discernible in images here. When worn the many folds in this voluminous textile would billow out from the wearer; the longer of these Mapels would allow this. And longer Mapels were an immediately recognizable sign of rank and prestige. Measuring almost sixteen feet(16' ... morein length. Some 4.8 meters(192" x 24" 488cm. x 61cm. this wonderful mapel was additionally prestigious for its length which was a display of the time invested in its manufacture. The fringe. And especially the especially long fringe here, is additionally prestigious and a sign of rank. As imaged in the book and reproduced here(both vertically and horizontally; Kuba garments are too often imaged in the vertical. Whereas to see them through their eyes, one must view in the horizontal) one can not readily appreciate the overall length and the impressive amount of work and time that this represents. Also, the'correct' view to appreciate this is as imaged in the horizontal image here, as, the very slightly wider strip with fewer appliques' would be above the'beltline' of the garment, with that portion folded down over the top of one of their wonderful beaded belts. With fringes then hanging down from both top and bottom of the garment, in the movement of ceremonial dance which this was made to be used for, this was an impressive display for all to see! Additional images and further description is to follow) Our consignor has five mapels published
