Tuareg is a term used to identify numerous diverse groups of people who share a common language and a common history. Tuareg camel caravans played the primary role in trans-Saharan trade until the mid-20th century when European trains and trucks took over. Goods that once were brought north to the edge of the Sahara are now taken to the coast by train and then shipped to Europe and beyond. Tuareg history begins in northern Africa where their presence was recorded by Herodotus. Many groups have slowly moved southward over the last 2.000 years in response to pressures from the north and the promise of a more prosperous land in the south. Today, many Tuareg live in sedentary communities in the cities bordering the Sahara that once were the great centers of trade for western Africa. Although most Tuareg now practice some degree of Islam, they are not considered Arabic. TYPE OF ART: Much Tuareg art is in the form of jewelry. About Tuareg: The Tuareg are a tribal people of the Sahara numbering today more than 300.000. They speak a Berber language, Tamarshak, and have their own alphabet. In ancient times, the Tuareg controlled the trans-Sahara caravan routes, taxing the ... moregoods they helped to convey and raiding neighboring tribes. In modern times, their raiding was subdued by the French who ruled Algeria. The political division of Saharan Africa since the 1960s has made it increasingly difficult for the Tuareg to maintain their pastoral traditions. Tuareg society distinguishes among nobles. Vassals, and serfs. Slave-stealing expeditions have been abolished, but the black descendants of former slaves still perform the menial tasks. Social status is determined through matrilineal descent. Converted by the Arabs to Islam, the Tuareg have retained some of their older rites. Among the Tuareg, for example, men- not women- wear a headdress with a veil. Many Tuareg starved in droughts in the 1970s. And others have migrated to cities. After leather, wood is perhaps the most important material in Saharan daily life, and is used for the poles and beams of the nomads’ tents on which are hung bags, saddles, bows and whips, as well as bed frames, dishes, cups, milking bowls, spoons, mortars and pestles. Among the Tuareg elegantly sculpted cushion supports( ehel) are important items in any well-appointed household. They were carved by members of the gu

TUAREG LEATHER MAT - MAURITANIA
TUAREG LEATHER MAT- MAURITANIA Tuareg is a term used to identify numerous diverse groups of people who share a common language and a common history. Although most Tuareg now practice ... moresome degree of Islam, they are not considered Arabic. This beautiful. Old mat was produced by the nomadic Tuareg tribes of Mauritania. It was handmade with reed and decorated with leather and exhibits traditional geometric designs. These mats were used as tent dividers. Screens, to decorate the interior of the tent, seating, praying etc. The length of the mat on the longest side is 37" x 19" not including fringe)
AFRICAN TUAREG? Hand Made COIN PURSE LEATHER NIGER WEST AFRICA
From an inherited estate we are able to offer the following: AFRICAN TUAREG? Hand Made COIN PURSE LEATHER. NIGER WEST AFRICA. Never used. Still has the hang tag on it that relative put on there. She kept track of where she purchased items, during her travels around the world. The tag states"Niger West Africa" an on the other side she has written the price she paid(or could be the original price tag but we are unsure since it is in English) $46. Unsure if US dollars either. Relatives traveled extensively, but had not traveled for several years. This beautiful coin purse draw string closes and accordion stretches out to open. So much attention to detail on the designs in bright turquoise, red, black, off white creme. Starbust like designs that are simply stunning! Has long tassels that are bound by colorful leather strips. Amazing ... morecoin purse. In doing research we kept finding that most purses and coin purses were made by the Tuareg Berber people. Unsure but it all fits as they were located in parts of Niger(tag states Niger) and the ones we did find, which was not many, has the same kind of designs and leather decor. But we will leave that up to buyer to make sure. It is approx. 4"T x 2"W. Any questions please let us know. Thanks! Vintage N. African Mali Tuareg Brown Leather Covered Iron Dagger Scabbard XLNT
This dagger and leather scabbard were purchased in Nairobi. Kenya in the mid 1980s at a museum shop that displayed many types of North African weapons and specialized in daggers and knives known to come from various tribes throughout that area. This one was described as belonging to the Tuareg tribe of nomadic people that roam about Saharan Africa. Primarily in the areas of Mali, Algeria and Niger. We cannot attest to its authenticity as having actually been used in combat but it is a great item to display and brings lots of interest and comments. The dagger itself is made of rough iron and is sharpened to a very fine point. The blade has different designs cut into each side. The scabbard/holder is made of wood and overlaid with artistically detailed leather with intricate designs etched into it. TUAREG, AFRICAN BRAIDED BAG, CAMEL BAG, LEATHER BAG, SHELL BAG, ANTIQUE BAG
I don't know what or who made this bag. I have had this appraised by several appraisers and the majority have said it was from west Africa and possible sub-saharan origin. Another one said he thought it may be Native American. It is made from a thin leather with the strips cut approximately 1/32 to 1/16 inch wide. I don't believe the leather is deer but believe it may be a smaller animal such as raccoon or rabbit since the leather is thin. The bag itself is woven with cowry shells and abalone tied into strips across the entire front. The leather is becoming somewhat brittle and some of the beads/shells are missing as is the strap on the right side. The bag measures 17 inches tall and 13 inches wide. The bag is extremely well made and must have taken a considerable amount of time. Patience and expertise to produce.

Tuareg crosses were originally worn by men, and passed down from father to son with the words, My son, I give you the four corners of the world because one cannot know where one will die. The crosses are considered strong talismans, protection, power and fertility symbols for both men and women. They are worn by men and women of other tribes throughout west Africa, and are used as currency to buy cattle and food. The different designs are named for different oasis villages. Authentic African Leather Pillow Case Large Coussin Tuareg Sahara Mali
Authentic. Old(but not used) traditional Tuareg leather pillow circa 1979. Dimensions(at widest/longest point& NOT including fringe) are 35"L x 14 1/2"W x 5" H. Is currently filled w/stuffing& has been since put in storage in 1980 to help maintain shape. Tuareg nomads are located all along the river and we stopped one day at Bintagoungou. Where I purchased the pillow. You're not buying from an Internet store or importer, but from the person who originally purchased this pillow. Tuaregs are known for their leather-work. As well as their horsemanship& use of camels. I've included some photos from that adventure, including ... moreone of a Tuareg man on a horse that has Tuareg-made colorful leather bridle. Consider yourselves lucky that I didn't include the photo of me on a camel! The photos are not included with purchase. Stored since 1980 in a smoke-free. Pet-free, perfume-free environment. This is an old pillow& there are several spots where there are small flaps in the leather. Some areas of fringe are also faded.
