African Hide & Wood Shield. Colorful and Very Interesting Piece! Unique!
I know very little to nothing about this piece other than it caught my eye in an antique store and was labeled"Africa n Breast Plate Shield. It seems small to me. But perhaps it would provide some shielding for the owner! The frame is wood and there is a handle formed on the back side. It's 17 1/2" long. 12 1/2" wide, oval. It appears that it has some age, a primitive quality, actual hid es with fur and tied securely with hide thongs. The decoration appears painted with o ff-white and rust-colored paint. The frame is wood. The hide is somewhat trans lucent. As shown in one photo, so that the painted design on the other side can be seen through the hide slightly. The overall condition is very good. I'd say, although there is some small area of edge wear and a little"shedding" of hair f rom the hides. It displays ... morevery nicely. Perhaps someone knows more about this piece and will share some information. Thanks for your interest. Have an enjoyable day.

Solid and thick war shield and in excellent condition for its age though it does have use and wear patina as with anything this old The person I got this from informed me that it was actually used in battle. African Tribal shield and metal spear - handmade hide skin Zulu Masai
Large African tribal animal hide painted shield and handmade long spear plus decorative leather and feather item. The shield is animal hide painted in a tribal design and stretched over a wooden frame. It measures approximately 45" by 22" Long spear is two parts metal with one part wood to join them. I'm no expert but it appears to be handmade hand forged. Overall measures 80 inches long. Shown in two pieces the top part measures approximately 28 inches with a 2 inch wide flat point. The bottom metal part measures approximately 42 inches and tapers down to a point and the wooden part is pretty well stuck into one of the metal pieces but when put together completely the wood that is exposed measures approximately 10 inches. The leather straping and feathers piece measures approximately 12 inches long overall. I believe they are ... moreemu feathers maybe ostrich. I'm not sure if this is supposed to be attached to the shield for the spear or if it belongs to something else altogether. I do not know much more about these items but feel free to ask questions and I will do my best to answer.

Old African Massai Shield Kenya Africa "Red Badge" Buffalo Hide Warfare Hunting
Old African Massai Shield Kenya Africa"Red Badge" Kenya shield. Cow Hide Warfare Hunting great details.Rare Collectible. Excellent Condition. DESCRIPTION Please look to Tribal Art Catalogs. Miller's& Carter's price guides for similar Massai shields are used not only as weapons in the Massai culture of Kenya. They also express the art and culture of the Masai people in Kenya. Each shield Was crafted from buffalo hide sewn onto a wooden frame. This one is sewed from Cow hide. The handle is attached at the center back of the shield and wrapped with leather strips. Among the Massai. Red paint was traditionally obtained by mixing earth with blood or the red sap of the solanum campylae fruit. White was derived from local clays, and black from the skins of burnt gourds. Younger warriors were only allowed the use of black, white, ... moreor gray on their shields, while red shields were for the senior warriors. Shields remain one of the Maasai warrior’s most important tools. They were used in warfare and hunting as well as practice and training. Outside of the warring context. However, shields were used in rites of passage and also functioned as prestige objects and symbols of identification. Early studies revealed that spear markings and shield designs were once used to tell between some of the Massai subgroups and also hinted at a larger, complex lineage identification system. Shield designs are known as sirata. Different designs and colors represent different things; a red badge signifies great bravery in battle and is only painted with the permission of a high-ranking chief. The intricacy of design and high craftsmanship of Maasai shields extend beyond utilitarianism and convey the sense of honor and status with which their warrior owners were invested. All the way from Kenya! I have had this for the Last 35 yrs. From my Grand Father! Measures 22" Tall x 13" Wide. Great Rare Collectible that will add life and History from far and Beyond into to any room. Perfect excellent condition. Please see a

ANTIQUE AFRICIAN MASSAI KENYA WARFARE HUNTING BUFFALO HIDE SHIELD AND SPEAR Maasai Warrior Shield and Spear- Genuine African Collectible This auction is for a shield measuring 20" H x 12" W. Hand Carved Spear handle measures 25-1/2" Length. Top Hand Made Spear measures 11-1/2" and Bottom Spear measures 8-1/2" Length. The Maasai(sometimes spelled"Masai" or"Masaai" are a Nilotic ethnic group of semi-nomadic people located in Kenya and northern Tanzania. They are among the best known of African ethnic groups. Due to their distinctive customs and dress and residence near the many game parks of East Africa. Each shield is crafted from buffalo hide sewn onto a wooden frame. The handle is attached at the center back of the shield and wrapped with leather strips. Among the Massai. Red paint was traditionally ... moreobtained by mixing earth with blood or the red sap of the solanum campylae fruit. White was derived from local clays, and black from the skins of burnt gourds. Younger warriors were only allowed the use of black, white, or grey on their shields, while red shields were for the senior warriors. Shields remain one of the Maasai warrior's most important tools. They were used in warfare and hunting as well as practice and training. Outside of the warring context, however, shields were used in rites of passage and also functioned as prestige objects and symbols of identification. This traditional shield is in

It was a personal shield of the Masai tribal member. This item can be considered an artifact of the Personal Masai tribal Members. Factual background; Hide and leather shields; Since earliest times the hides of wild and domesticated animals have been part of the important treasure trove of materials. ... moreAbove all. Leather is one of the oldest materials used in the making of clothing and utensils by nomadic, hunting and pastoral tribes. The number of different kinds of wild animals whose hides had been used in the making of shields is so great that it appears impossible to list them all. Naturally, hides with the largest possible size, stiffness and thickness(buffalo, hippopotamus, rhinoceros, elephant, giraffe etc) were particularly preferred. The hides of zebra, gnu and the back of various kinds of antelope, however, found use as basic materials for the production of shields. By contrast the cuirass of a crocodile or the hide of its soft underbelly were only sporadically employed. Although Schebesta-Höltker clearly distinguished between hide and leather shields. This division has been avoided in the present book, We are of the opinion that a strict division is not so simple. Shields made from the skin of animals have been manufactured through innumerable processes. From the partial or no dehairing of hides to hardened hides or to leather like or aged materials respectively. The skin and tegmen[an inner lining] of individual animals also had to be prepared and treated
