All to prevent some one else from sitting on it or worse a malevolent spirit could take charge of the stool and the owner's spirit. Stools are also identified with the various royal states as each state will have it s own design as will their king and queen mother. Stools often have proverbs or sayings or historical events identified to them in fact the skulls of defeated enemies were often attached to the stools of a victorious king! Stools start out as a white wood and through time take on a burnished and well-worn hue as this stool and it must be noted that Akan stools are carved from a single piece of wood reflecting the skill and talent of the stool carvers and not nailed together as European chairs. Designs of stools may vary as to the inventiveness of the stool carver and today many of the proverbial forms are either forgotten or interpreted as a new form. Niangi Batulukisi. No comparative example has been found. This lost wax cast of a copper alloy mask(bronze or brass) could come from the Akan people of the Ghana and Ivory Coast in west Africa. Though masks are not normally used by the greater number of Akan peoples including the Asante or Fante. They are often found attached to various chiefly regalia prominent on sword sheaths or chiefly stools and hung n the wall. Such masks are said to represent the heads of defeated enemies and are shown with some evidence of local scarification which is rare among the Akan but often shown on terracotta sculptures. It is difficult to determine the age of this Brass mask however the attention to detail and the facial features show that this was the product of a skilled craftsman. Old Akan Geometric Bronze 44,9 grams Goldweight Ghana Africa
Old Akan Geometric Bronze 44.9 grams Goldweight Ghana Africa An old Akan geometric goldweight from the Gold Coast- Ghana. This triangular-shaped goldweight together with the circle and the square are some of the basic shapes explored during the post-Islamic period of Akan goldweights. The use of gold was limited in the past on the African continent. Due to the restrictions of Islam. Gold dust was used as exchange up until the time that Europeans introduced their currency; the gold trader's equipment included goldweights, scales, tiny boxes as well as spoons for the gold dust. Akan goldweights were calibrated and would correspond to a certain weight of the gold dust or gold metal that was being weighed. Calibration was possible in this case by the insertion of copper insets in the holes of the weight. These are not decorative but are rather ... moreintentional in order to adjust the ponderal value of the gold being weighed. Akan culture has two main periods: Early and Late; the Early period is thought to have been from about 1400–1729 AD. With some overlap of the Late period that lasted from approximately 1700-1900 AD. There is a clear stylistic distinction between the Early and Late periods; geometric weights being the oldest form of goldweight. Dating from 1400 AD onwards while figurative weights, representing people, animals, objects etc. first appear around 1600 AD. This provided merchants with secure and fair-trade arrangements with one another. The status of a man increased significantly if he owned ... morea complete set of weights. Complete small sets of weights were gifts to newly wedded men. This insured that he would be able to enter the merchant trade respectably and successfully. Beyond their practical application, the weights are miniature representations of West African culture items such as adinkra symbols. Plants, animals and people. Meanings behind the weights Scholars use the weights. And the oral traditions behind the weights, to understand aspects of Akan culture that otherwise may have been lost. The weights represent stories. Riddles, and code of conducts that helped guide Akan peoples in the ways they live their lives. These are rare and normally sell for $1000 or more at auction. 2" high. 875" wide, 1" deep. Gold weights are not made of gold but were used in the trade of gold. Until the end of the nineteenth century. Gold(sika) was the currency of the Asante/Ashanti, Fante, Baule and other Akan peoples of Ghana. Once Europeans made contact, they began calling the Ghanaian coast"The Gold Coast, but commerce in gold dust predates the arrival of the Portuguese. It began in the late 14th century, when Arabs established trade routes across the Sahara desert. This contact resulted in a need for an accurate system of measurement. From about 1400 until ... morethe arrival of the Portuguese, the Islamic ounce, based on the Byzantine and Roman ounce, was used, as well as another Islamic measure called the mithqal. With the Portuguese came the Portuguese ounce. And toward 1600 the Dutch introduced the heavier troy ounce. An Akan trader therefore had to have several sets of weights, one for each system. Most people engaging in trade owned a set of weights ranging in appearance from small geometrically patterned weights to complex figurative and representational weights. Using his own weights on a scale kept the transaction fair, and a trader knew the exact weight of his own gold weights. Cast in the lost wax technique these small sculptures served to facilitate trade while depicting Akan values characterized through proverbs or popular saying or simply showing people in normal activities. The Lost Wax Method is an exceptionally labor intensive process where a wax mold is formed by hand over an open fire until the mold is exactly as intended. The wax is then dipped into very fine powdered black mud several times; being allowed to harden between applications; and forming a clay casting around the mold. The clay is then heated until wax

Fine African Fly Whisk Swatter Kuba Baule Akan Congo I'ory Coast Ghana Detailed
Up for offer is what seems and feels like a much finer example of African fly whisk or swatter I've been able to find. My knowledge of African art is somewhat limited so my first thought this was Akan(I'ory Coast or Ghana) but the gold-leaf gilding. If there was any, is long gone; or Kuba peoples, living in Zaire/Congo. But the motifs are also similar to Baule peoples, I'ory Coast. The hair is most-likely horse. 36" total length. The handle, which feels wonderful to grip is 9"L, including the bound, red cloth portion. There are three faces on the handle(so, not quite Janus-headed) and as I tried to show in the photos, the carving is rather exquisite and remarkably fine, almost pin-head detail-fine. Shipping to the US will be $25; more to an international destination. I'm open to suggestions if this should be from ... moresomewhere else. A few chips which I imagine are old damage.
Antique West African Ghana Akan Ashanti Bronze Gold Weight Sculpture
This West African Gold Weight is probably an early 20th century souvenir weight of the type that were being made and sold to Colonial overseers and tourists. This is my opinion. The work is not as refined as the actual weights of the 19th century. Having said that. This is an extraordinary weight. We have a dignitary with his retinue of 17 underlings, some carrying the dignitary, while others play various roles around him. Many traditional African crafts are displayed by the figures: war clubs, stool, staffs, a shield? horns and drums. This weight measures 5.75"L x 4"W x 5.75"T. Although I'm new to selling on Ebay. Please check my feedback profile to view my previous transactions. I ship immediately and pack very safely. Thank you for looking.

Forowa were extensively decorated by repousse(pressing designs onto the soft brass sheet) by stamping and cutting. The images and designs on forowa range from simple plays upon geometry and patterning to figurative or animal representation. To a great extent forowa have developed as the result of contact with Europeans when Fante and Asante of the colonial ‘Gold Coast’ acquired copper and brass sheet as part of early trade exchanging these metals for gold and slaves. As trade was conducted with a number of European countries on the coast and Moslems to the north the Fante and Asante had a variety of sources from which to chose motifs so that the shape of the forowa might reflect Moslem influence in the style of container as well as the designs or European shapes. This forowa with removable lid probably dates from the late 19 th or early 20 th century and is a fine example of an art object that is avidly sought for collections of art from the Asante or Fante of Ghana.
