Dogon Stool with Figural Pillars in Center Mali African SALE Was $250
Title, Dogon Stool with Figural Pillars in Centre Mali African Type of Object, Stool, Country of Origin, Mali, People, Dogon, Materials, wood, Approximate Age, Second half 20th century, Dimensions, 9 inches H. x 6.25 inches W. Overall Condition, poor, Damage/Repair, large cracks in seat and in base. Chips in places, A Dogon stool with cylindrical seat and base. The center is decorated with figural"three pillars decorated with carved figures. This stool was also used as a shrine piece. The oral tradition of the Dogon tells us that they originated on the west bank of the Niger River about 1000 years ago. They moved west at some point. Into parts of what is now Mossi territory in Burkina Faso, but chose to return east due to pressure to assimilate into the Mossi Kingdom. This time, around 1500, they found a place almost unreachable by invaders ... moreon horseback-the arid but imposing Bandiagara Cliffs. Here most of the Dogon have remained to this day, as one of Africa's most spiritual people. Dogon family dwellings, as well as their shrines and granaries, are constructed in a uniquely haunting way, leaving even the most jaded observer spellbound, in what can only be described as a"magic kingdom. The Dogon have taken the time-honored worship of ancestors to new heights, and their huge pantheon of astounding and colorful carvings reflect this. It is possible today for tourists and scholars to arrange masked dances for public view, but these dances are for entertainment only, and only a few of the art-forms are actually revealed. Ritually meaningful ceremonies are not shared with the public. The Dogon have even made their funerals a unique spectacle. Accompanied by the chanting of Binu priests, the body is reportedly lowered over the jagged cliffs into its final resting place, as dancers venerate the life of the deceased. Quite a way to enter the heavens! The important PBS series"Africa" did a beautiful segment on the Dogon and Fulani. 69187* All content. Including pictures, Copyright Africa Direct In

The Ewe who live in Ghana use small carved wooden dolls for fertility purposes, similar to those of their larger neighbors, the Asante. They use pairs of small figures representing twins in a similar fashion to those of the Yoruba. The total output of the Ewe is limited to these few forms, most of which could have possibly been borrowed from neighbors. In addition to the ubiquitous small sculptures. The Ewe weave glorious and complex textiles, known as"keta, which are made of long cotton strips that are then sewn together. Though they are similar to the Kente of the Asante, there are distinguishing characteristics which can be discerned by experts. There are those who think the beauty of the keta exceeds that of the kente, and undoubtedly the subject still arises as the two cultures mingle together in Ghana today. The present example is from th

Abstract art, meanwhile, has remained marginal. The textiles of the BaKuba(Kuba) people of the Democratic Republic of Congo are an exception. Although part of a tradition that stretches back 400 years, Kuba textiles have a strikingly modern look. They use improvised systems of signs, lines, colors, and textures, often in the form of complex geometric rectilinear patterns. Their appliqués are reminiscent of works by 19th- and 20th-century masters like Matisse, Picasso, Klee, Penck, and Chellida. This is no coincidence: all of those artists were inspired by Kuba design! Appliqué is the most popular weaving technique among the Kuba. To create an appliqué. Disingwayo the uncle of Shaka and Shaka himself, controlled the bead trade and monopolized ... morenot only the beads themselves but also the colors and designs available to groups within Shaka’s control. Beadwork became a status symbol and an important item of personal expression as well. Stylistic variations of beadwork such as pattern, color and color sequence indicate area or group affiliation. Colors and patterns take on more personally expressive meanings as in the case of Zulu “love letters.” Recently beadwork has become a symbol of political identity as well, with color and pattern indicating political affiliation. Instead of beads being worn only by the conservative, traditional members of the community, wearing beadwork is increasingly being seen as reclaiming a cultural identity.
