Legend says that the Kente cloth weavers learned their skill from watching a spider. Anansi, who is a significant figure in African folklore. In many cases, the thread was obtained by carefully un-picking silk garments, and reweaving them. The looms have two or three heddles. A very large and exceptional ... moretrumpet in the form of a carved female torso with head. The cylindrical trunk of this imposing trumpet shows two breasts indicating that the sculpture represents a female figure. In addition. The entire trunk is beautifully covered with elaborate geometric motifs. Details on the head helped identify this great piece of art as a Makonde trumpet. The Makonde are one of the most prolific art-producing cultures in East Africa. And their works are known worldwide. Though often identified with their wildly abstract and sensual"shetani" carvings which are produced for sale, they also have a long tradition of ritual art, which includes a wide variety of helmet masks, male and female ancestor figures, and an almost endless variety of utilitarian objects, such as this figural trumpet. These unique currency forms were well worked and were often embellished with a number of parallel lines close to the edges. The surface of this currency shows some age. This may be an early 20th century example. It comes from the Topoke people who live in the Equarorial region of the Democratic Republic of Congo. An Ewe Textile called"Keta" because such textiles were originally produced in a coastal town of that name. The Ewe occupy parts of both Ghana and Togo. Separated by the Volta River, and the arts and rituals of these groups are quite different. The Ewe who live in Ghana use small carved wooden dolls for fertility purposes, similar to those of their larger neighbors, the Asante. They use pairs of small figures representing twins in a similar fashion to those of the Yoruba. With good combination of designs known as Wotoa or shell of a snail, Nkyimkyim, or zigzag, and the Babadua or bamboo-like cane design. There are generally two sizes of cloths, the smaller woman's, and the larger man's. Kente cloth is the royal cloth of the Asante, of Ghana. This one is a man's cloth. Yellow, orange, red, blue, green are the dominant colors used by the Asante. In many cases, the thread was obtained by carefully un-picking silk garments, and reweaving them. The looms have two or three heddles. Legend says that the Kente cloth weavers learned their skill from watching a spider, Anansi, who is a significant figure in African folklore.
