Kente cloth is the royal cloth of the Ashante(Asante) of Ghana worn by both men and women during important ceremonies. Legend says that the Kente cloth weavers learned their skill from watching a spider. Anansi, who is a significant figure in African folklore. In many cases, the thread was obtained by carefully un-picking silk garments, and reweaving them. The looms have two or three heddles. The cylindrical trunk of this imposing trumpet shows two breasts indicating that the sculpture represents a female figure. In addition. The entire trunk is beautifully covered with elaborate geometric motifs. Details on the head helped identify this great piece of art as a Makonde trumpet. The Makonde are one of the most prolific art-producing cultures in East Africa. And their works are known worldwide. Though often identified with their wildly abstract and sensual"shetani" carvings which are produced for sale, they also have a long tradition of ritual art, which includes a wide variety of helmet masks, male and female ancestor figures, and an almost endless variety of utilitarian objects, such as this figural trumpet. There are also the startling female"belly" masks. Masks play a prominent role in Makonde life, and mark the end of the initiation and circumcision cycles for boys, as they re-enter society as men, ready to marry. These were specially shaped to look like spearpoints but were too thin and long to serve as such. These unique currency forms were well worked and were often embellished with a number of parallel lines close to the edges. The surface of this currency shows some age. This may be an early 20th century example. It comes from the Topoke people who live in the Equarorial region of the Democratic Republic of Congo. Although part of a tradition that stretches back 400 years, Kuba textiles have a strikingly modern look. They use improvised systems of signs, lines, colors, and textures, often in the form of complex geometric rectilinear patterns. Their appliqués are reminiscent of works by 19th- and 20th-century masters like Matisse, Picasso, Klee, Penck, and Chellida. This is no coincidence: all of those artists were inspired by Kuba design! Men did the weaving, women did the dying and embroidery. Raffia, which comes from the raffia palm tree, is notoriously difficult to work with. Soaking and pounding were both used to soften the fibers. Each piece took months to make. Matisse was hugely influenced by these textiles, and had a number of them in his bedroom. This is an antique African Ashanti drum that dates back to the mid to late 1800s. It is carved out of a tree trunk with an animal skin stretched over the top. It's in solid overall condition with some termite damage and two pegs missing for the animal skin stretch. It measures 35 inches from top to bottom with a 43 inch circumference. An Ewe Textile called"Keta" because such textiles were originally produced in a coastal town of that name. The Ewe occupy parts of both Ghana and Togo. Separated by the Volta River, and the arts and rituals of these groups are quite different. The Ewe who live in Ghana use small carved wooden dolls for fertility purposes, similar to those of their larger neighbors, the Asante. They use pairs of small figures representing twins in a similar fashion to those of the Yoruba. The total output of the Ewe is limited to these few forms, most of which could have possibly been borrowed from neighbors. Additional Information: A wonderfulKente cloth in good condition; strips are hand-sewn together. With good combination of designs known as Wotoa or shell of a snail, Nkyimkyim, or zigzag, and the Babadua or bamboo-like cane design. There are generally two sizes of cloths, the smaller woman's, and the larger man's. Kente cloth is the royal cloth of the Asante, of Ghana. This one is a man's cloth. Yellow, orange, red, blue, green are the dominant colors used by the Asante. In many cases, the thread was obtained by carefully un-picking silk garments, and reweaving them. The looms have two or three heddles. Legend says that the Kente cloth weavers learned their skill from watching a spider, Anansi, who is a significant figure in African folklore.
