Ogoni Articulated Mask- Nigeria Early-Mid 20th Century. Original Wood. Pigment, patina Height 21.5cm( 8.5in) Nicholson Collection. Whitestone, NY, 1950-1965 ... moreSilva Collection. Lindenhurst, NY, 2009, by decent from the above. Detailed provenance documentation on file and can accompany the artifact for historical conservation purposes. Inhabiting the coastal region of Nigeria. The Ogoni have a reputation for their masks used in cultural, religious and political ceremonies. To understand the dynamics of masking in the coastal region of Nigeria, one must make an important analytical shift, away from imposed categories of style and toward locally named and identified genres of masking. Masking genres are evolving. In any given village group, each genre is well defined, but because each group has a unique history; the array of mask types, mask names, and sponsoring associations often vary greatly from one location to another. The serene Ogoni mask offered here for auction was formerly of the Marta Nicholson Collection of Whitestone. New York. The artifact was collected sometime between the mid 1950s to early 1960s when Nicholson frequently traveled to Nigeria and Cameroon. The mask was later inherited by her nephew(Silva) in 2009. Despite some typical wear and minor loss to the jaw hinge(insect free since the 50’s) the mask is in fine condition. Appropriate of age, origin and medium. Reference Elu Face Mask(Accession No. 1989.862) Ogoni People, 1920-1960, Gift of Mr. and Mrs. Harrison Eiteljorg, The Indianapolis Museum of Art, Indiana for a related example. The Igbo ethnic group inhabit a heavily forested region of south-western Nigeria. And subsist via farming, merchant trading, hunting, and fishing. As a society, the Igbo have a long established cultural hierarchy and are divided into some thirty three diverse subgroups, which at least in part explains the diversity of art found among them. Secret societies abound within the Igbo communities, and are responsible for change as well as tradition in the social and political life among the people. As a collective people, they display a remarkable artistic diversity, shared among dozens and dozens of mask varieties, as well as an innumerable variation in figures. Instruments, doors, frames, and an abundance of other functional objects are also produced out of wood. The maternity figure itself is an extremely important form of art produced throughout much of the African continent. And a form of this figure can be found in the majority of art producing ethnic groups. Some are rendered as part animal, some strictly human. Some are produced as clear representations, some are highly abstract. They can be created as nothing more than effigies, or commissioned to relieve the plight of a childless marriage. They are generally carved from wood and cast in metal, but other medium have been historically noted. To the African woman, motherhood is the single most important role in life. An African Tribal Creations gallery NO RESERVE AUCTION The Yoruba people are the largest art producing ethnic group in Africa. And are renowned for their ... morecopious forms of artwork. A largely agrarian society, the Yoruba are distributed throughout Nigeria, Togo, and Benin, and number in the range of 12 million people. Their artistic interpretations of people are generally rendered in a realistic style, minus the exaggerated facial features, in contrast with many other African tribes which produce highly stylized, even surrealistic or impressionistic representations of the human form. A highly popular art-producing group among collectors, the Yoruba are known for their numerous and elaborate art forms as much as for their history of human sacrifice. The Yoruba culture is subdivided into a number of cults. Each identified by particular thing it holds sacred. This mask originates from the Gelede cult, which focuses its attention on the power of elderly women. During Gelede festivities helmet masks such as these are worn on or over the head with a raffia costume, and danced in reverence and celebration. On the'cheeks' of the face are large identifying scarification marks. It still has most of its original pigment, including white(kaolin) green, etc. Color of the pigment is faded in some areas, but still represented strongly for the most part, and the piece stands well on its own without support. Wear and age marks are in evidence as is common, including minor age cracking, rub marks, etc. but the piece does not appear to have undergone any serious breaks or repairs. This is a beautiful, prominent, eye catching standalone piece, and a highly coveted artform from the Yoruba culture! This piece measures in at 10.5" x 10.5" x 11" With a weight of three and a half pounds. MEDIUM: Wood. Pigment NOTHING we sell at African Tribal Creations is made in China. Taiwan, Thailand, or wherever. All items are 100% guaranteed AFRICAN ART. Made in Africa BY the indigenous peoples of Africa. We have 100% positive f

Title, Yoruba House of Head Ile Ori. Nigeria Africa, Type of Object, Hat. Headdress, Country of Origin, Nigeria, People, Yoruba, Materials, cowrie shells. ... moreCotton cloth, animal hide, palm ribs, mirrors, Approximate Age, mid 20th century, Dimensions, 24 inches H. x 10 inches W. Overall Condition, Good. Most of our pieces have spent decades on at least two continents. And have been treasured by several owners.  Small splits, scrapes and cracks are a normal part of their patina attesting to their age and extensive use. We examine each piece carefully when we receive it and report any damage we find in our listings. Please look carefully at the pictures which may also reveal condition and damage. Damage/Repair, loose frame on top. Loose bird decoration, dust throughout, and wear in places, mirror has a few rust and patina, leather trimming and triangular amulets are fragile showing signs of age and wear, Additional Information: A rare old Yoruba house of head showing evidence of extensive use and substantial age! Cowrie-covered symbolic crowns represent the Yoruba"cult of the head. a traditional belief that the head is the essence of personality, and has power to offer spiritual protection. The cowrie embroidery indicates both money and prestige. The top is designed in the form of a pyramid and is opened like the peak-roofed Kobi on the palace Veranda. The beaded piece on the top is probably a representation of a bird which is known as a symbol of the inner, the sacred ruler. Traditionally, these were destroyed upon the death of the owner, and the cowries spent as money, so they are rare. According to Thompson's BLACK GODS AND KINGS, The personal ruler of man is his head. The residency of his fate is honored with a crown, but the crown of the head is distinguished from the headgear of the king by lack of fringes. Recommended Reading: Drewal. H. J. and J. Pemberton III, with R. Abiodun Yoruba: Nine Centuries of African Art and Thought, New York, 1989) Drewal. H. J. and M. Thompson Drewa

The weaving is used for special ... moreoccasions, including engagements, weddings, naming ceremonies for babies, kings and titleholders ceremonies, and religious holidays, funerals, both Christian and Islamic. Supplementary weft float and brocade patterning are common, as is the distinctive openwork made by using weft threads to tie together a group of warps. Lurex from Japan, metallic thread, is sometimes used. Men have traditionally done the weaving, but some women weave as well. Vintage African Kirdi (Cameroons & Nigeria) Beaded Loin Cloth/Apron/Cache-Sexes
Old African beaded loin cloth/Cache-Sexes/apron. From the Kirdi tribe in Cameroon and Nigeria. Item came from the estate of a long time Santa Fe collector and dealer in African art. I was told he bought most of his things in the 1960's and 1970's. He passed away in 2010 in his 90‘s. His label stated that the piece was from Nigeria. 15” W x 5” H + a 1” row of shells along. Item is old and has been used and worn. There is one minor tear at the bottom corner. But not really seen when hanging(see last photo) In the book“The History of Beads” The author Lois Sherr Dubin has a cache-sexe pictured, and states that the loin cloths“were worn by women and girls for protection and to attract attention. Different cache-sexe styles identify group affiliations, age grades, and special conditions such as puberty, marriage, and widowhood. The Cameroon ... moregovernment has long outlawed the wearing of the cache-sexes, but the practice continues under the cover of long robes. The glass-beaded aprons reveal a variety of chevron and triangular patterns. Cowrie shells are usually hung from the bottom of the apron. gsrx_vers_486(GS 6.5.1(486)

Rare Authentic Nupe Bida Hand Woven Wrapper Cloth - From NIgeria
Nupe Hand Woven Wrapper Cloth Dimensions: Length- 172cm(67.7" Width- 127cm(50" This wrapper is hand woven by a Nupe woman from Bida in Northern Nigeria. This cloth would have been worn as a wrapper(edekpa) It was produced on a woman's upright vertical loom. It is quite typical of Nupe cloths as it consists of two wide strips of fabric. Which have been sewn together to form one large cloth. It was made from imported machine-spun cotton, with the addition of supplementary weft float patterning in rayon thread in warp wise strips. Initially cloths of this design would have been used only by royalty and upper class women but as this style of patterning became more popular from the late 1930’s its ownership become more wide spread– although the weft float patterns were not as intricate and elaborate as the one here. Which suggest ... morethat the original owner would have been a wealthy woman. The cloth is also ornamented with tassels. Created by the grouping together of the ends of the warp threads. This is an adire eleko, machine stitching used to resist and make patterns. This textile decorated with interesting cowrie shell motifs drawn by hand. Starch-resist is a technique that consists of applying a dye-resisting agent to a cotton fabric by coating the surface of the cotton cloth with flour paste(cassava or cornflower) and then immersing it in a cold water dye such as indigo as is the case for this textile. Starch is only applied to one side of the cloth. Cassava starch will be applied through the zinc stencils and the stencils placed on top of the cloth would be pressed into the cloth with a metal spatula. To well perform this task the cloth will be nailed flat on a table. A series of stencils may be required to get good patterns. The cloth will then be soaked into the the indigo- dye bath repeatedly to make sure the dyeing process is well-done. The starch is then scraped off the cloth, which is hung out to dry. 89568* All content. Including pictures, Copyright Africa Dire
