Vintage Blue Indigo Woven Fulani Textile 1955-1960 Mali, Niger West Africa
SIZE: 80in x 53in. MATERIAL: Cotton. Sheep Wool + Camel Hair. COLORS: Navy. Cream, Gold, Burnt Orange. ERA: 1950-1960's. ORGIN: Fulani tribe- Mali. West Africa. When I first saw this textile. I was instantly in Love. I later found out that these textiles are made by the Fulani people, and are rarely exported, except sometimes to the Tuareg people of North and West Africa. They are used as floor coverings, shawls, room dividers, wall hangings and ben coverings. They are not typically used as blankets since the blend of wool and camelhair is rather scratchy. I was looking for textiles similar to this one online. And I only found one, that has since sold on a antique dealers website. 1stdibs.com. and it was SO EXPENSIVE! yikes. and they say about these textiles" Fulani blankets are distinct among Western African textiles for two reasons. ... moreFirst they are woven of wool. Second their stylistic motifs are influenced by North African vocabulary. Woven on a horizontal strip loom, they are made of four to six panels sewn selvedge to selvedge. Each strip has additional decoration applied with supplementary weft. Fulani weaves are called arkilla. They are used as blankets, shawls and room dividers as well as for other purposes. They are exported, mainly north to the Tuareg" This textile is vintage. And was woven in the 1940's by the Fulani people in Mali. It is like a beautiful and delicate elderly lady. full of history and beauty, but still old and frail and fragile. The craftsmanship on this textile is gorgeous, and was clearly done by a skilled weaver. This particular textile was originally a part of a much larger piece, but since it was damaged in places, and much to expensive to sell together, Ibrahem and several other vendors divided up the textile and sold it in smaller pieces that were"more affordable" It is made up of 6 different individual strips of small cloth. If it was woven like this(size) it would have taken nearly a month to weave. Because of the environment. And handmade nature of
