Kuba Skirt of Barkcloth and Raffia DR Congo African SALE Was $99

Raffia, Pigment, Approximate Age, 20th Century, Dimensions, 40 inches x 15 Inches, Overall Condition, Poor. Most of our pieces have spent decades on at least two continents. Damage/Repair, cuts. Some tears, rips, seams and holes; stains, We do not recommend laundering textiles. And do not accept returns of textiles which have ... morebeen laundered in any manner. Even dry cleaning is too much for some of these antique textiles. For some of them, a very gentle HAND washing(NEVER MACHINE, on any setting) in cool water with a very gentle detergent works, but even then, dyes may not be colorfast, and fabric may be less strong than it appears. Additional Information: The Kuba of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Formerly Zaire, are known for their exquisite raffia woven textiles, carved wooden palm wine cups and cosmetic boxes in interesting shapes, and masks reflecting their elaborate mythology. Bark cloth is known as ISHYEEN among the Kuba. The bark is obtained from a particular tree. After removal the bark is soaked in water until it is soft enough to be worked. Using ivory or wooden pounders one or more men beat the bark against a smooth horizontal tree trunk to expand it and make it softer. Once the bark is dried, the women will apply patterns on the bark by using black dye from the juice of the gardenia seed. Vansina's CHILDREN OF WOOT is a fascinating book about them. The famous royal center of Benin in Nigeria produced a number of remarkable objects and bronze heads cast in bronze including the original of this late replica that was also cast in Nigeria. Benin City was the center of power for the Edo people and the place of residence for the Oba. The ruler. This is a head of an Oba based upon a 14th-15th century original and is a stylized portrait of a man at the Court of Benin. That this is a replica cannot be doubted. But what is important to note is that the skill of the Nigerian bronze and brass casters of today who cast this head continue a tradition nearly 500 years old at Benin and have not lost their skill in producing interesting works of art. Benin heads were kept on altars. The hole in the head was to support an ivory tusk. Intricately carved. For exquisite examples of heds, and an article on them. Benin art is royal art, made to glorify the great king, or OBA, who is considered to have divine ancestry. The brasscasters guild historically worked primarily for the monarchy, with smaller pieces being available to chiefs. It has been in existence since the fifteenth or sixteenth century. The style of this figure is close to present day Bamana or Dogon sculptures. Overall this could be a work from a Bamana blacksmith. The genesis of the Bamana as a definable culture can be traced back to the 17th century. Though archaeological evidence hints that they could be much older. They are of Mandinke origin and today are the largest culture in Mali. The zenith of Bamana culture occured during the late 18th century during the reign of N'golo Diara, who conquered the Peul tribe and occupied the important cities of Timbuktu and Djenne. They remained powerful until conquered by the French in 1892. Recently, like many African cultures, they have been affected by Islamic settlers from the east. Though they still consider themselves animists, many villagers now practice a hybrid combination of both"religions. This has allowed these competing cultures to coexist peacefully. 82470* All content. Including pictures, Copyright Africa Direct Inc. 2006 Add Us To Your Favorite Sellers! Africa Direct. They always move from place to place in the search of good pasturage, water and fresh vegetation for the cattle. Many Turkana families are now engaged in agriculture and fishing. While there are a quite few art-producing peoples of Kenyan origin who have contributed significantly to the recognition of East African art, the Turkana, along with their closely related neighbors the Maasai, are arguably among the most important of them all. In fact, much of the art from the Turkana region is composed of a wide variety of everyday objects out of wood, leather and gourd for milk, but in their hands many of these utilitarian pieces have risen to levels of beauty unparalleled in East Africa. Where representative art has flourished for centuries, carvers and crafts people have typically taken for their subjects human figures, animals, plants, and elements of the natural world. Abstract art, meanwhile, has remained marginal. The textiles of the BaKuba(Kuba) people of the Democratic Republic of Congo are an exception. Although part of a tradition that stretches back 400 years, Kuba textiles have a strikingly modern look. They use improvised systems of signs, lines, colors, and textures, often in the form of complex geometric rectilinear patterns. Their appliqués are reminiscent of works by 19th- and 20th-century masters like Matisse, Picasso, Klee, Penck, and Chellida. This is no coincidence: all of those artists were inspired by Kuba design! The most commonly known of the Kuba textiles are the cut-pile Shoowa or Kasai Velvets. Named after the river along which the BaKuba live. The cultural grieving process ... moreis well documented and may be observed in the carving of a figure known as Ere Ibeji, which both represents the lost child and serves as a ritual point of contact with the soul of the deceased. The carving of the Ere Ibeji is commissioned under the guidance of an Ifa diviner, a Babalowo, whom the parents consult in selecting the particular artist who will do the work. The sculpture itself represents a deceased infant, but is carved with features and attributes of an adult. The sculptural features of genitalia, pubic hair, wide hips, developed breasts, gender specific facial scarification and mature coiffures exude an erotic sexuality, uncommon for infants. As Dr. Moyo Okediji notes, the completed ibeji figure is carved as an adult, rather than as the deceased infant, in a mythological form that depicts the concentrated calm of a Yoruba artist. When the carving of the Ere Ibeji is completed. The artist is given a feast and payment as determined by the Orishas. Once the figure is brought to the family dwelling, it is placed on a shrine dedicated to Elegba with the hope that the Orisha or soul, which was split in two parts when the twins were born, will now again reside in the
