Title, Zulu Married Woman's Headdress Isicholo African, Type of Object, Hat/Headrest, Country of Origin, South Africa, People, Zulu, Materials, cottonthreads ... moreand cloth. Wire, vegetal fibers, pigment, Approximate Age, 1960s, Dimensions, 18 inches Diam. Overall Condition, Fair to good, Damage/Repair, wear in places. Red/orange pigment stays in your hands when handling this headdress, used cotton cloth around the base, We do not recommend laundering textiles. And do not accept returns of textiles which have been laundered in any manner. Even dry cleaning is too much for some of these antique textiles. For some of them, a very gentle HAND washing(NEVER MACHINE, on any setting) in cool water with a very gentle detergent works, but even then, dyes may not be colorfast, and fabric may be less strong than it appears. Additional Information: Zulu headdress from the 1960s. The compound used to make the red/orange dye rubs off on your hands. Married Zulu women always keep their heads covered in public. For ceremonial occasions. They wear elaborately woven red hats with beadwork attached. It is then sewn into the hair of the wearer. Red powder is periodically reapplied. If the dried plant happens to have tiny yellow flowers in amongst the leaves then it's impepho(Helichrysum odoratissimum) which is used primarily as a ritual incense by Zulu diviners but is also used as a perfume and insect repellent: often found in bedding and pillows as well. A similar headdress is published in Hlengiwe Dube. Zulu Beadwork Talk with Beads. AfricaDirect Inc. 2009, p. 63. About the Inkehli/Isicholo headdresses Hlengiwe wrote: This one has beaded headbands(umqhawazi and isembozo) It is made out of dried grass. intertwined with red cotton and human hair and covered with red ochre. Which refers to the living cow and also evokes the blood of the earth. In areas such as Eshowe the headdresses are made with lots of beadwork. As a signifier of respect for the new husband and the in-law family, a woven fibre beaded headband 9Umqwazi) is added

Approximate ... moreAge, Mid 20th century, Dimensions, 20 inches x 19 inches, Overall Condition, Good. Most of our pieces have spent decades on at least two continents. And have been treasured by several owners.  Small splits, scrapes and cracks are a normal part of their patina attesting to their age and extensive use. We examine each piece carefully when we receive it and report any damage we find in our listings. Please look carefully at the pictures which may also reveal condition and damage. Damage/Repair, loose strands. Strands ripped with a few missing beads, Ndebele Beaded Apron For Married Women. OLD African Provenance: From the Collection of Peter Nelson. Who was a Peace Corps volunteer, collector, and dealer. These pieces were collected in the 1970s and very early 1980s. This piece is from his personal collection. Certificate of Provenance available! Additional Information: A superb and old piece. In very good condition, showing clear evidence of wear, this beaded apron is a work from the Ndebele. This apron called MAPOTO was worn by a married woman. Mapoto is a symbol of motherhood. It means the wearer bears a child. In the past a Mapoto apron could be worn daily. Today it is replaced by more modern and practical clothes. This is an old and traditional Mapoto apron distinguished by the strings of leather ending in beadwork in the bottom center and with a frame made out of goat-skin. The designs on the top and in the middle recall that of the painted facade of the Ndebele's houses. The Ndebele of South Africa are superb bead-workers. Their beadworks are remarkable for their variety. Their bright colors, and their intricate designs. Beadwork has became a cultural icon of the Ndebele. Beadwork as well as mural art are important aspects of the Ndebele and South Africans peoples. They have a social meaning and are part of important ceremonies and

African antique necklace or metal and bead Cache-Sexe. modesty, pubic apron) from the Kirdi tribe in Cameroon and Nigeria. Item came from the large estate ... moreof a long time Santa Fe collector and dealer in African art. He had a gallery in Santa Fe in the 1960's and bought most of his things in the 1960's and 1970's. Many of the things I was lucky to buy were rare. Several sources where I have seen a similar looking item called this a necklace. And it certainly would be worn as one, but I found almost the same piece in the book"Africa Adorned" by Angela Fisher, copyright 1984, where she showed a Kirdi woman wearing a"picuran" as they are called there, with a similar brass and copper plaque and chain hanging, but this one has metal"nail" forms between the red beads, which research shows to be"phallic" symbols, sometimes also made and used as currency items. Both Fisher in"Africa Adorned" and Lois Sherr Dubin in her book “The History of Beads states that the cache-sexes “were worn by women and girls for protection and to attract attention. Different cache-sexe styles identify group affiliations. Age grades, and special conditions such as puberty, marriage, and widowhood. The Cameroon government has long outlawed the wearing of the cache-sexes, but the practice continues under the cover of long robes, especially by older women. gsrx_vers_486(GS 6.5.1(486)

Disingwayo the uncle of Shaka and Shaka himself, controlled the bead trade and monopolized not only the beads themselves but also the colors and designs available to groups within Shaka’s control. Beadwork became a status symbol and an important item of personal expression as well. Stylistic variations of beadwork such as pattern, color and color sequence indicate area or group affiliation. Colors and patterns take on more personally expressive meanings as in the case of Zulu “love letters.” Recently beadwork has become a symbol of political identity as well, with color and pattern indicating political affiliation. Instead of beads being worn only by the conservative, traditional members of the community, wearing beadwork is increasingly being seen as reclaiming a cultural identity. VINTAGE AFRICAN ISICHOLO MARRIED WOMAN'S HAT ZULU PEOPLE S. AFRICA ADORNMENT
Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE GJPaw Auctions is pleased to offer a stunning vintage Isicholo or married woman’s hat. From the Zulu people, South Africa. Zulu women wear wide hats like this one to proclaim their married status. The hat is based on a hairstyle that married Zulu women wore in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Initially, Zulu women shaved their heads, leaving a tuft of hair that they covered with fat and ochre. Later they grew the tuft into a truncated cone, wove other materials into the hair and covered their hair with fat and ochre. By the turn of the century a woven hat that to this day is usually worn on special occasions replaced the cone-shaped hairstyle. They are made using a circular basketry frame over which a cotton cloth is stretched and knotted at the top. Overstitching the cloth produced the ... moreconcentric circles that begin at the top of the hat and continue over the sides. A cloth band was sewn to the rim. This superb example measures 10 inches in diameter by 3.25 inches in height(25.4 cm by 8.25 cm) The hat shows wear consistent with use and a dating to the late 20th century. But generally is in very good condition. It is guaranteed authentic and would make a superb addition to any collection of African adornments or African art in general. GJPaw Auctions has been in the Art business for over 25 years and is now expanding its operation to eBay.
