African Tuareg Leather Wallet Travel Pouch Bag - Niger Sahara - Vintage - 1960s
Description African Tuareg Handmade Leather Wallet Purse Bag Niger Sahara Vintage- 1960s I have listed several pieces from the private collection of a Peace Corp Volunteer who was stationed in Madaoua Village. Niger in 1968-1969. She acquired all her pieces from the local market or as gifts from the local people she worked with. The Tuareg that live north towards Agadez. Niger would come to the Madaoua market with their wares. This listing is for a man’s handmade leather wallet that would be worn around the neck or under garments. Once the lower half of the wallet is pulled out of the decorative cover and opened up there are three compartments to hold small personal items and money. This piece has the classic Tuareg green and red colors and leather fringe. Some of the fringe on the front of the wallet is yarn. Leather is most likely from ... moregoat skin. The draw string is two leather strings tightly twirled together. The solid leather sections have cut geometric patterns in them. Condition: Very good condition for its age. The leather is a bit dried out. But all strings are whole and there are no visible signs of tears or rips. The internal compartments are clean. Measurements: Body of wallet with“secret” compartment inside: ~12” long x 4” wide Top string hangs ~14” to top of wallet Compartment section when open is 12” long x 4” wide The longer fringe at the bottom extends an additional 8” to 10” Email me if you have any questions or want to see additional photos. I have other Tuareg pieces listed from the 1968-1969 era. Just visit my store and view the African section under Collectables! See more fun things in my other listings. TUAREG, AFRICAN BRAIDED BAG, CAMEL BAG, LEATHER BAG, SHELL BAG, ANTIQUE BAG
I don't know what or who made this bag. I have had this appraised by several appraisers and the majority have said it was from west Africa and possible sub-saharan origin. Another one said he thought it may be Native American. It is made from a thin leather with the strips cut approximately 1/32 to 1/16 inch wide. I don't believe the leather is deer but believe it may be a smaller animal such as raccoon or rabbit since the leather is thin. The bag itself is woven with cowry shells and abalone tied into strips across the entire front. The leather is becoming somewhat brittle and some of the beads/shells are missing as is the strap on the right side. The bag measures 17 inches tall and 13 inches wide. The bag is extremely well made and must have taken a considerable amount of time. Patience and expertise to produce.

Tuareg crosses were originally worn by men, and passed down from father to son with the words, My son, I give you the four corners of the world because one cannot know where one will die. The crosses are considered strong talismans, protection, power and fertility symbols for both men and women. They are worn by men and women of other tribes throughout west Africa, and are used as currency to buy cattle and food. The different designs are named for different oasis villages.
