Authentic, well preserved Bronze of the Benin Kingdom in what is now Nigeria exhibits a virtuosity and sophistication of style that has astonished the Western world since they were visited in the 15th century. Their work was brought to Europe following a punitive expedition by the British in 1897, causing a great sensation. The people of Benin, called Bini, are descendant from the Ife, also known for their remarkable Bronze. Almost all Benin art was created to honor the King. or Oba. These plaque were mounted on the walls of the Oba's Palace and record the history of the Benin Kingdom. Most depict the king or warrior Chiefs. The Benin Empire dates back to prehistoric times. The political systems that were monarchial, were well established before the fourteenth century. The Rulers of Benin and Yoruba had close ties, and by the fifteenth century Benin became and important power in the region. With the backing of the monarchy selected artists of Benin developed a special style of sculpture vastly different from the rest of the region. They produced many fine bronze and or brass heads, figurines, brass plaques, and large rectangular metal pictures, which were used to decorate the Oba's palace. The Benin Empire soon became the largest of the political systems of the Guinea Coast and toward the middle of the sixteenth century; the Oba ruled an area. Which spread from modern Lagos to the Niger Delta. Back in the late 19th century when the British forces invaded Benin City. They were overwhelmed to find artistic sculptures cast in brass/bronze. Mainly farmers and merchants, they also hunt and fish. They are subdivided into thirty-three subgroups and are spread out among about two hundred villages scattered through the thick forest or semifertile marshland. Only on the northern and western edges of the area, under influence from Igala and Benin, are hereditary rulers found. The heads of families form the council of elders, which shares its power with numerous secret societies. These societies exercise great political and social ... moreinfluence. There is strong social pressure toward individual distinction, and men can move upward through successive grades by demonstrating their achievements and their generosity. What is sure is that the present example was modeled after the original dating originally approximately 1550 1750 A.D. Queen mothers were believed to have supernatural powers which could be used to aid their sons. The obas, and heads like this one were kept on altars in royal enclaves. Benin art is royal art, made to glorify the great king, or OBA, who is considered to have divine ancestry. The brasscasters guild historically worked primarily for the monarchy, with smaller pieces being available to chiefs. It has been in existence since the fifteenth or sixteenth century. Most castings are brass(an alloy of copper and zinc with traces of other minerals) although some are made made of bronze(an alloy of copper and tin with traces of other metals) Without doing an analysis on each piece, it is not possible to know the content. In Edo culture dwarfs were known as the jugglers and acrobats in the Oba court. Sculptures dating back in time(14th-15th century) have served as the model for this figure especially similar figures worked in a realistic style using the famous lost wax technique. The dwarf Benin figure is recognized by its over sized head. Its stocky(squat) body, its short arms and legs. The patterns on the torso and on the skirt are familiar to the cast bronze plaques dating back as early as the 15th century. Additional wax"pipelines" are made for the wax to exit and gases to escape. The wax is then covered with a layer of fine clay, and with succeeding layers, each coarser than the previous one. The mold is then heated, which melts the wax and fires the clay into a solid mold. The empty space is filled by pouring in molten brass. The art of bronze casting was introduced around the year 1280. The kingdom reached its maximum size and artistic splendor in the 15th and 16th century. For a long time the Benin bronze sculptures were the only historical evidence dating back several centuries into the West African past. And both the level of technical accomplishment attained in bronze casting, as well as the monumental vigor of the figures represented, were the object of great admiration. Benin bronzes are better known than the artworks from Ife or Owo due to their presence in Western museums since 1890s. In the thirteenth century, the city of Benin was an agglomeration of farms enclosed by walls and a ditch. Standing and holding a ceremonial fan in one hand and a breast in the other hand! This example was m odeled after the original dating approximately 1550 1750 A.D. The famous royal center of Benin in Nigeria produced a number of remarkable objects and bronze heads cast in bronze including the original of this 20th century copy that was also cast in Nigeria. Benin City was the center of power for the Edo people and the place of residence for the Oba. The ruler. This bronze cast figure is of the Queen Mother, who was the mother of the Oba, the ruler at Benin, who still rules today. That this is a replica cannot be doubted, but what is important to note is that the skill of the Nigerian bronze and brass casters of today who cast this head continue a tradition nearly 500 years old at Benin and have not lost their skill in producing interesting works of art. Vintage Benin African Brass/ Bronze Elephant Sculpture/ Figure Model This is a charming model of an elephant cast in bronze or brass using the lost wax process- unusual little thing that has a tiny bowl on its back- could be used to hold a candle? I believe this was made in Benin in Nigeria sometime in the 1960s. Size: 2 1/8 inches( 5.2 cm) long x 2 1/4 inches( 5.6 cm) high Weight: 83 grammes In good condition. Nice colour, no damage.
