These textiles are quite rare, and on the wish list of many museums because they are no longer made. Mostly used for ceremonial dances, the gauzy, vibrantly ... morecolored fabric is made of raffia palm fiber that is then tied and resist-dyed and re-dyed in a striking pattern of rectangles, ovals and circles.

PUBLISHED Kuba Textile SUPERB NOBLEMAN'S CEREMONIAL SKIRT MAPEL 192"- 16'- 4.8m!
Published in" Kuba Textiles and Design" by Elizabeth S. Bennet and Niani Batulukisi. Ph.D. copyright 2009, ISBN#978-0-9816267-1-0, photographed and illustrated as Fig.14 on page 25. This is a Superb Kuba Nobleman's Ceremonial Garment of exceptional length. A wraparound skirt or Mapel. Constructed and made to be worn only on ceremonial occasions. The distinct style of the garment. Comprised of long rectangular strips of individual pieces sewn into rows, with wonderful abstractions, is a style of the Ngoombe and Dengese popular at Court from antiquity. Not readily discernible in images here. When worn the many folds in this voluminous textile would billow out from the wearer; the longer of these Mapels would allow this. And longer Mapels were an immediately recognizable sign of rank and prestige. Measuring almost sixteen feet(16' ... morein length. Some 4.8 meters(192" x 24" 488cm. x 61cm. this wonderful mapel was additionally prestigious for its length which was a display of the time invested in its manufacture. The fringe. And especially the especially long fringe here, is additionally prestigious and a sign of rank. As imaged in the book and reproduced here(both vertically and horizontally; Kuba garments are too often imaged in the vertical. Whereas to see them through their eyes, one must view in the horizontal) one can not readily appreciate the overall length and the impressive amount of work and time that this represents. Also, the'correct' view to appreciate this is as imaged in the horizontal image here, as, the very slightly wider strip with fewer appliques' would be above the'beltline' of the garment, with that portion folded down over the top of one of their wonderful beaded belts. With fringes then hanging down from both top and bottom of the garment, in the movement of ceremonial dance which this was made to be used for, this was an impressive display for all to see! Additional images and further description is to follow) Our consignor has five mapels published

Kuba Raffia Textile Huge Women Ceremonial Skirt Ntshak DR Cong SALE WAS $350.00
Title, Kuba Raffia Textile Huge Women Ceremonial Skirt Ntshak DR Congo African Type of Object, Kuba Women's Skirt, Country of Origin, DR Congo, People, Kuba-Bushoong, Materials, Raffia. Dyes Approximate Age, early to mid twentieth century. Dimensions, 190 inches X 30 inches, Overall Condition, Poor, Damage/Repair, stains. Holes, tears/seams, We do not recommend laundering textiles. And do not accept returns of textiles which have been laundered in any manner. Even dry cleaning is too much for some of these antique textiles. For some of them, a very gentle HAND washing(NEVER MACHINE, on any setting) in cool water with a very gentle detergent works, but even then, dyes may not be colorfast, and fabric may be less strong than it appears. A multi-panel skirt, worn wrapped ... moremultiple times, in the Kuba Kingdom, which is in the Democratic Republic of Congo, formerly Zaire. Men did the weaving, women did the dying and embroidery. Raffia, which comes from the raffia palm tree, is notoriously difficult to work with. Soaking and pounding were both used to soften the fibers. Each piece takes months to make. I have written a book on them. See Elizabeth S. Bennett and Niangi Batulukisi Ph.D. Kuba Textiles& Design, AfricaDirect Inc. 2009, 41 pages. 28 full color photographs, paperback. They use improvised systems of signs, lines, colors, and textures, often in the form of complex geometric rectilinear patterns. Their appliqués are
