This piece is attributed to the Bamana. If truly Bamana. This staff would have been used as an emblem of authority by important dignitaries or elders in the society. Staffs such as this among the Bamana were associated with the chief's prestige. Such staffs were carried in important ceremonies to help identify the status of the owner. Used as a staff, this ax is a personal object that become associated to the owner. In the past, when the owner died this staff would be buried with him or given to his successor who would use it with great respect and as a memorial item. The representation of human or animal figures on the handles of such objects recall the ancestors and the spirit protectors of the owner. The Bamana. As a definable culture, can be traced back to the 17th century, though archeological evidence hints that they could be much older. They are of Mandinke origin and today are the largest culture in Mali. The zenith of Bamana power occured during the late 18th century during the reign of N'golo Diara, who conquered the Peul tribe and occupied the important cities of Timbuktu and Djenne.

This doll is made of light wood and features a legless and armless female figure. It was made by the Fante people.This is a particularly good example of Fante carving in both details and form. The Fante are members of a larger culture and language group known as the Akan. That includes the Asante among others. Carved wooden figures such as this are found among all of the Akan, serving a number of different uses. Women have small figures carved to insure fertility and the birth of healthy children. Known as Aqua'ba these small figures would be carried by the women in bands around their waists or after giving birth they would place the Aqua'ba in shrines as marks of their appreciation to the local spirits. Some Aqua'ba are highly abstracted while a few others are carved naturalistically. What distinguishes this figure uniquely as Fante is the stylized headdress of strands of hair being brought to a point, which can be seen among the Fante today. Benin City was the center of power for the Edo people and the place of residence for the Oba. The ruler. This is a head of an Oba based upon a 14th-15th century original and is a stylized portrait of a man at the Court of Benin. That this is a replica cannot be doubted. But what is important to note is that the skill of the Nigerian bronze and brass casters of today who cast this head continue a tradition nearly 500 years old at Benin and have not lost their skill in producing interesting works of art. The rest of the staff is painted in black and red and decorated with geometric.Twisted or and ringed motifs. This staff comes in four parts! Such finial staffs are found among various Akan peoples of the Ivory Coast or Ghana. Especially among Asante and Baule. I these cultures such figural staffs belong ... moreto royal elites or family elders, and official spokesmen or linguists. They were made to be seen and admired as works of art as well as emblems of office.Some of them would be covered with gold leaf and worked onto the surface so that the designs carved into the wood showed through. The top is the most important part of a linguist's staff. Symbolic images were carved onto oratorâs staffs. These images illustrate proverbs supposed to communicate specific messages. Additional Information: ... moreBamana door locks were composed of two parts: one was a fixed vertical element which was most often carved with human or animal figures fixed to the door with iron staples. The second part of the door lock was a horizontal wooden piece that slides through the vertical piece where iron teeth would fall into small holes locking the door. The doors had pointed corners that served as hinges and a sculpted wooden lock to keep it closed. A small key would lift the iron pegs to open the door. And on this example the vertical element is a stylized standing figure with raised arms. The sliding locking bar passed just behind the trunk. The figure is a representation of an ancestor which presence is required to ensure protection and prevent the intrusion of bad spirits and sorcerers. The Dogon of present day Mali live along the Bandiagara escarpment a range of cliffs approximately 120 miles long and in places up to one thousand feet high. Living in small villages on the plain at the foot of the escarpment the Dogon farm in an environment that is marginal and demanding. As subsistence farmers they depend upon the food they produce to live storing it in granaries made of mud with thatched roofs ... moreand carved doors providing access to the foodstuffs held in the granary. Numerous granaries attest not only to the need to store food but equally reflect family structures as each wife will have her own granary where personal objects as well as family shrines known as Binu are kept. Openings into the granaries and shrines were sealed by carved doors or panels. Figures of humans. Animals or of symbolic motifs were carved in relief onto the surface of the doors or on the doorlocks. The Dogon. A complex and spiritual people, have a blithering array of ritual art objects. Though they have been studied by scholars for many years, the use and naming of these artworks remains elusive. There are close to 100 different wooden masks, countless figural statuary sizes and forms, and innumerable smaller objects, from door locks, to metal castings, to jewelry, to items that defy meaningful classification. The technique and use of this cloth by the Ewe. The Ewe are neigbhors of the Asante and live in Ghana and Togo. Their textile are very similar to the Asante Kente Cloth. The Ewe cloth are generally more muted. They are called"Keta" because they were originally produced in a coastal town of that name.They were worn by both men and women. Large textiles like this one are generally worn by men. In many cases, the thread was obtained by carefully un-picking silk garments, and reweaving them. The looms have two or three heddles. Legend says that the Kente cloth weavers learned their skill from watching a spider, Anansi, who is a significant figure in African folklore. Additional Information: A standing figure with a Yoruba traditional headdress in chignon. The figure is wearing a jacket made out of cotton cloth wih yellow and blue beads onto it. The Yoruba of Nigeria and of the Benin Republic are known for having an extraordinarily high rate of multiple births. In earlier times. New-born twins, or ibeji, as they are called, were believed to be evil, monstrous abnormalities and infanticide was a common practice. However, such beliefs and practices were later superseded and reversed, and by the middle of the 18th century twins came to be seen as a blessing; they were awarded the status of minor deities, called Orishas, and their arrival was viewed as an omen of good fortune for the family. By the 19th century the cult of the Ere Ibeji was firmly established and continues to this day. The death of one or both twins is regarded as a great calamity for the family, one which requires immediate appeasement of the soul of the deceased child. Damage/Repair, some oxidation on blade. Cracks and wear in handle, dent in handle, Additional Information: Ceremonial Sword Afena/ Ako Afena Akan from the Asante people of Ghana. The blade is made out ... moreof the iron and has lozenge opening designs. The pommel(handle) is made of wood and has geometric incised motifs on it. In some cases such pommels are made of aluminum or covered with gold leaf. Among the Akan swords of different shapes and complexity serve ceremonial. Ritual and political purposes. European visitors commented upon swords as early as the mid-1600's. They are primarily ceremonial and parade swords for they have neither point nor cutting edge. Swords(afena or afenatene) are prominently displayed at royal courts as regalia of the king reflecting his power and authority. Sword bearers precede the king or rest at his feet when he sits in state. During occasions when the king is carried in his litter they rest their sword hilts against the litter. Swords are used to swear oaths to the king and state, and to identify messengers as they carry the king's word while on the king's business. Some swords(akrafena) were to keep the king's soul pure and used for him to swear oaths. Other gilded wooden-handled swords are of this type and if used to swear oaths were known as"nsuafena.
