Antique HUGE Carved Old Paint 1/2 ROUND VICTORIAN Architectural FINIAL Pediment ANTIQUE ARCHITECTURAL FINIAL DECORATION Wonderful antique large solid wood Victorian 1/2 round finial decoration measuring approximately 11" wide and 6" tall. Featuring an orb shape made from building layers of carved wood into a round form. It bears the original old weathered gray paint. Once a complete pediment ball, probably mounted to a stand or base, it retains part of the original wooden peg threaded through the back opening which would have held the two pieces together. Condition is good with lots of paint wear. Rubbing and loss as shown- stable age related wood shrinkage cracks, and general shabbiness from age- love it! I've always used this as a piece of architectural art- it makes an interesting statement standing alone on a table top or ... moregrouped with other unusual shapes. 1896 Architectural Salvage ZINC Victorian Roof Top Finial turret Cap Corbal
Very interesting piece of Victorian architectural salvage. Circa 1896. I have a photograph that shows this piece as it once was, on the top corner of a building on a Main Street in Michigan. The piece was on top of the building in the corner. Originally there was two of these on the building. The brick building was once in Armada Michigan, on their main street. Years ago, about 40, the building caught on fire, and a friend of mine got this piece in the wreckage. The piece was not damaged by the fire. No signs of smoke or odor. My friend has had the piece in storage all this time. The piece would make a great wall hanging. It is a one of a kind piece, in all my years of buying salvage, this is my only roof piece. The piece is made of zinc and measures: 33 1/2" tall x 12" deep x 17" wide. Has a weight of: 11 pounds. Not the original ... morepaint. It also looks like some adornments on the face are missing. A nice pair of antique Victorian era newel Post Finials. The Finials are made of wood. The beehive design is oak and the other is Mahogany. The Oak finial measures 5 1/2" high x 4 5/8" in diameter across the flat bottom. The Mahogany Finial is 5" high x 4 1/2" across the bottom excluding the mounting peg. Both are in good overall condition and retain the original finish. The only thing to note is normal wear including small nicks on the Beehive design and a dent in the other finial, see photos. Its original purpose and history are unknown but it seems likely that it once graced the post of a fence or perhaps was perched on the peak of a roof or a cupola. It has an encrusted rusty surface and a slightly uneven bottom where it broke away from the rest of it. It would look smashing as a piece of room decor- I don't think it would be difficult to build a wooden stand for it, perhaps with some distressed painted finish.
