Wood is smooth from sanding and worn smooth too. Someone filled cracks with wood putty. And sanded. It looks like the next step was probably stain and varnish for it to be perfect. Lots of slices of wood made this knob. Maybe it had a topper to it, but I like it this way. My father in law kept it on his book case with a little brass statue he had. Originally used to make sand casts which were then filled with molten metal to form the metal parts needed for machines. This one has"TOP OF HOUSING. SAFTY(sic) VALVE, PORCELAIN DISC" etched on one side of the top, the other has the date May 30, 1918 and raised metal numbers"8 0 8" affixed. A nice collectible example of precision woodworking from the early 1900's. Measures: 9 1/2 D x 6 1/2"H Condition: rustic. Industrial and almost 100 years old- various nicks, scratches, etc. appears somewhere along the line it might have been coated with thin layer of clear varnish, though we are not sure. FOR AUCTION: AN ANTIQUE CAST IRON FINIAL. MADE IN A FLUER DE LIS PATTERN. THIS FINIAL IS APPROX: 22 INCHES LONG BY 5 INCHES WIDE. IT IS FASHIONED FROM 1/4 INCH THICK IRON AND WEIGHS ALMOST 6 LBS. THE TOP ARROW PORTION IS APPROX: 11 INCHES IN LENGTH. IT HAS AN OLD COAT OF SILVER PAINT OVER OXIDIZED IRON. THIS WAS POSSIBLY USED AS A FENCE- BUILDING OR BARN TOPPER.
