c1879 CAST IRON oak leaves HARTFORD CT CAPITAL building great 4 projects 33"h
cast iron Finial from the Connecticut State Capitol building. A very rare piece of history- removed from the Connecticut state capitol in the late 1970's early 1980's during a major renovation of the 1879 gothic victorian grand building constructed in Bushnell Park(formerly Trinity college property) Prior to the construction of this building- Connecticut had two state capitals: one in New Haven. One in Hartford- after centuries of the state government alternating it's location yearly- a legislative act was passed locating the seat of state government in Hartford(of course the citizens of Hartford sweetened the pot with a $500,000 gift towards the construction of a new building! A site was chosen and paid for by the state- 6 years of construction overruns. And finally in 1879 a brand new $3.2 million dollar building was opened- ... morethe building was one of the top ten architectural wonders of the period. A century of wear and tear caught up with the building in the 1970's and luckily the leaders of the time thought better than to tear it down- instead they spent close to $20 million to refurbish the building. This cresting- original to the building was made by Taylor& Fenn in East Windsor. CT- and recast in the early 1980's(by the same company! for the replacement iron was put back on the roof! provenance can be provided in a book commissioned by the Old State House association! This lot constist of 5(five) cast iron leaves- these pieces were used to affix the iron cresting to the roof. The roof has a variety of different pitches. Thus the'feet' here have different angles. The base is approx. 5 inches in diameter. The base can be made smaller or larger up to a point, and the ball part is approx. 4 1/4 inches in diameter. It has a tenon on the bottom for mounting. I can also make it with a double ended screw for mounting without a tenon. You can buy it in walnut, cherry, maple, poplar, oak or? Mahogany will cost $16.80 more, cherry will cost $5.80 more. Set of 2 Unstained Oak Wood Finials
Here are a pair of unstained oak finials. Intended for a 2" 2.25" diameter wood rod. However, we can see these as fitting the top of a newel post or some craft project. These are approximately 5" long x 3.5" diameter(at the widest point) They have never been used and still have the plastic protective tube over the screw; however, we no longer have the original packaging. Craftsmanship is perfect and the two finials match each other exactly.

This is a quite superb wooden oak gothic finial with the pair of lion heads to either side with other carvings of which: During our research we have been informed it certainly dates from the early period of the 19th century and is of a black forest origin. Dates about c1820. Wonderful overall intricate carved finial with the quite superb carved gothic lion heads to either side. Leaf and other to the top. Carved in relief. Therefore a one piece carved finial. Other carvings of around the circumference. The carved decorative oak finial has an overall height of about 9.25inches. Max dia of about 7.25inches. Base dia of about 4.75inches. Condition: Considering the age. The overall condition is excellent with no major blemishes except: a chip to the base area at the edge. All as per pictures.
