A very rare piece of history- removed from the Connecticut state capitol in the late 1970's early 1980's during a major renovation of the 1879 gothic victorian grand building constructed in Bushnell Park(formerly Trinity college property) Prior to the construction of this building- Connecticut had two state capitals: one in New Haven. One in Hartford- after centuries of the state government alternating it's location yearly- a legislative act was passed locating the seat of state government in Hartford(of course the citizens of Hartford sweetened the pot with a $500,000 gift towards the construction of a new building! A site was chosen and paid for by the state- 6 years of construction overruns. And finally in 1879 a brand new $3.2 million dollar building was opened- ... morethe building was one of the top ten architectural wonders of it's period. A century of wear and tear caught up with the building in the 1970's and luckily the leaders of the time thought better than to tear it down- instead they spent close to $20 million to refurbish the building. This cresting- original to the building was made by Taylor& Fenn in East Windsor. CT- and recast in the early 1980's(by the same company! for the replacement iron was put back on the roof! provenance can be provided in a book commissioned by the Old State House association! They retain most of there original old red paint. Nice fluted post with decorative round finial topped with a pineapple. They are in very good solid condition. They will free stand for display but they are quite top heavy. The would be great toppers for your iron fence or they would make a great pair of lamps by removing the pineapple finial and threading it. They measure approx. 22"long. Antique 11" Cast Iron Garden Cemetrey Fence Finial
This is an Original Antique Cast Iron Fence Finial. It measures 11 inches high. The top hole is 1 3/8 inches in diameter. With the bottom hole being 1 3/4 inches in diameter. I can't turn the screw. I dug this up out of a creek bank. Seems to be in Good Condition!
