WEATHER VANE: Antique Finial. Gilded Copper& Iron, Painted Wood early 1800's. 35" x 13" This is a wonderful old Finial which came off of a building in Columbia. Pennsylvania, which was built in the early 1800's. So I assume that the Finial dates to that time also. Columbia is on the east bank of the Susquehanna River. South of Harrisburg. It was founded in 1726 and became very prosperous in the 1800's as the terminus of the Pennsylvania Canal. There are many very elegant remnants of its past prosperity. The building that this Finial came from was once one of them. The Finial stands 35 inches tall and is 13 inches wide. The top part has four hollow copper leaf forms. A long iron spike springs up from the center with a 4 inch diameter copper ball. A little more than half way up. The whole is fixed to a wooden support ... morewhich is painted a dusky green. The leaf forms. Spike and ball are all gilded over what seems to be many layers of paint and probably earlier gilding. There is a great deal of wear to the gilding and to the iron spike. The end of one of the leaf forms has been bent a bit and there is a ding on the ball. But. At least in my eyes, these things are as the freckles on the nose of life's perfection. For this old Final has a great deal of quirky character and terrific visual appeal. It was obviously made to be seen from far below. So I tried to include some photos from down low. As it is now the spike is easily removable. On the whole. The Finial is in pretty good shape and is certainly an interesting and charming relic of early 1800's American architecture. The photos give a very good idea of its form and condition. If you should have any questions. Please don't hesitate to contact me. And thanks for looking. Vintage old brass wreath finial with a wood screw, pediment, embellishment
Offered for auction is this well constructed old brass finial or decorative piece. It is a brass wreath of leaves secured by a ribbon design with shiny brass highlights against a dulled brass. At the base is a wood screw to screw this into a piece of wood. I am not sure what this was originally from as it was an estate piece with no explanation. The back is flat. The wood screw could be replaced with a machined metal screw if you wanted to use this as a lamp finial. The inner diameter is 2 7/8” The outer diameter is 4 1/2. The total height with the screw is 5 1/2. Important Information I am in the process of selling objects which I have collected over many years of attending estate auctions. Antique Architectural Wood Finial Gilt Decorated Bird Peafowl Wood Base
Up for auction is an antique vintage folk art carved wood peafowl. Peacock or bird finial recently found at auction in the suburban Philadelphia, PA area. It is found in good used condition. The nail in the base probably held the piece in place. A black wood base was later added. A very nice display piece. There is a hole near the end of the feathers, as seen in photo#11. Another loss of wood is noted near the right talon. Please see photo#10. There are a few non-active worm holes as well. Some losses to the gold leaf are also noted. These are a couple of old round wood finials. Both 5 3/4 tall(without screw) And 1 is 3 1/2 round, and the other is 3" round. 1 has a screw and not the other. Both in great shape with the exception of the normal splitting of age. Raw solid wood, never been stained.
